Title: Game article on ABC News about RED
Post by: xxrayrayxx on May 30, 2010, 08:40:21 AM
NEW YORK (Billboard) - In an age when even the most prominent rappers have to hustle to promote each new album, Game's approach could be considered refreshingly contrarian -- or just plain suicidal.

The rapper says he believes seniority in music equates with not having to promote upcoming projects, and that's exactly the approach he's taking for the release of his fourth studio album.
"I'm not into promoting. I give you a date, and if you're a Game fan, then you'll get the album," the West Coast rapper says matter-of-factly about his upcoming album, "R.E.D.," due July 6 on Interscope Records. "I don't sell myself. This is my fourth album. I don't think I need to do all that."

Of course, there are two sides to every story -- and Game's product manager, Andrew Flad, who recently squared away the final details of an extensive promotional run, says that promoting the album is "imperative."

Starting this week, Game will spend a few days making radio stops in the southern part of his home state of California before heading to Europe for more radio visits and performances. He then returns to the East Coast, traveling from Boston to Florida and then back up to the Midwest for even more promotion.

"Sending Game out to touch the fans this way is a must and always helps," Flad says. "He will grind it out, he will do the work, and he will love it."

Game will appear on BET's "106 & Park" for the video premiere of first single "It Must Be Me," which will air June 4. Additionally, an X-Box Live partnership, a Geek Out session with AOL, a MySpace promotion and a Vevo "Day in the Life" episode are all in the works.

Game also recently released a mixtape, "The Red Room," and is planning a tour, most likely with the group N*E*R*D -- whose frontman/producer, Pharrell Williams, co-executive-produced the new album with Game's mentor Dr. Dre . Game also has discussed touring with Dre and Snoop Dogg.

But all this might be for naught if Game doesn't land a hit. Thus far, he has released "It Must Be Me" and mixtape track "Shake," along with an accompanying video featuring actress Stacey Dash. Neither song has charted yet.

In characteristic fashion, Game says he isn't worried. "Ain't No Doubt About It," which features Williams and Justin Timberlake, will be the next single, he says, adding, "We'll be good on that end."

Other songs on the album include "Mama Knows," featuring Nelly Furtado and dedicated to Game's mother, and "Infrared," which Game says finds him "rapping reckless with no hook. This is the first song on the album, and it's followed by two other songs that have no hook. That'll set the tone for the rest of the album."

Until release date, Game says he's taking it one day at a time, simply because he can. "Generally I just wake up in the morning and I live life and I make my decisions as far as music goes based on how I'm feeling that day."

I am no doubt a fan of Game but I have a great deal of doubts about how his album is going to turn out. At least we get the video on June 4.

I'm sorry for him but this is gonna flop hard, he released 4 singles and nobody gave a damn, and I don't think the 5th will be a hit as he thinks.

Yeah, I have a feeling that it will be mostly pop too but I guess we will have to wait and see. He said in a recent interview that White Soft Porn was never finished and that they were just fucking around in the studio. He said he only recorded one verse to it and then moved on. Too bad cause it sounded good for just fucking around. Oh well.

That single with Justin aint gonna do shit, its just so generic and boring. I really wanted this album to be a return to Documentary Status since he was back with Dre, but looks like its gonna be a poppy Neptunes album, and not good Neptunes like The Clipse

This album seems to be dead in the water.

I have an idea that the reason hes trying to steer away from the gangster image is because he thinks that is what is keeping him from going into the next level, Like Jay-Z and Kanye West status type artist. Which is too bad because I think this direction is going to do more damage then help. This type of music only works for people are true to it. you cant transtion from gangster rap to pop without looking like a fool.

The gangster rap image is played out... at least some forms of it are.

When he came in the game he wasn't very typical with tracks like Hate It Or Love It or Dreams.    Both were less gangster rap and more socially reflective.  Unfortunately most of his official album material has lost that after The Documentary.

He should shed that facade that he's banging today.  He should roll with memories, rhymes about being a father and how it's essential to the community, etc.

Bang Along isn't gangsta rap but it's definitely one of his better tracks.

Most importantly more rappers needs to shut the fuck up and retire if they ain't got shit to say.  Go read books and educate yourself.  Travel the world and feel new experiences.  Maybe you'll then have something more potent to say.

I think people would support those types of tracks (which ARE gangster rap by the way, just more socially conscious gangster). But that doesn't seem to be the direction he's going when almost everything he has released sounds like generic pop songs, except worse cause you realize its game and start laughing

Im seeing another push back (september) in his future. Album has no steam at all. EVERYTHING he has dropped thus far has left us wanting a little more from it. Im a game fan but I just dont see this shaping up as a quality release. Give us something Game.

I'll be kind of surprised if RED drops on July 6. For that date to stick, the Justin single should have caught fire by now and It Must Be Me should have at least charted by now. I see an 8 week push back, with an August 31 release date. Game and Pharrell need to unscrew what they screwed up and drop something proper. Or at least get Timbaland to do the "Justin's on it so we got a hit" joint...

Well, upon radios receiving the single and listening to it they threw it on the ground and lit it on fire,so yeah,it has caught fire.
