Celtic fans have been posting on the LA Times lately that the Laker's first 5 title's don't count because they happened in Minneapolis. LOL. Growing up in California, we always counted those titles, and then when I moved to Minnesota, they don't count those titles to the T-Wolve. In Staples Center, they have a banner honoring those great Lakers team, in Minneapolis they have a statue of George Mikan but no banners honoring the Minneapolis Lakers, but no banners. So my conclusion is that the Lakers titles belong to the Lakers, and not Minneapolis.
17 titles to 15 titles.

The Los Angeles Lakers have won 10 titles.
The Boston Celtics have won 17 titles.
The Lakers have won 15 titles.
The Celtics have won 17 titles.

Yeah, people up here are still mad at the Lakers, but then again no one went to the games in between Mikan and Baylor. In the 58 season, the Lakers lost over 50 games, and so even after the Lakers drafted Elgin Baylor, no one went to the games. Baylor lead the Minneapolis Lakers to the NBA Finals in his rookie year (to lost to who else, the Celtics), and the Lakers played one more year before moving to LA. Just before they moved to LA, they drafted Jerry West. Can you think of Baylor and West in Minneapolis, it would have been crazy, and the Lakers never would have moved. BUT, since no one went to the games, and the fans in Minnesota don't know how to weather rebuilding years, (people here piss and moan all the time at the thought of a rebuilding year, or drafting youth to lead into the future) the Lakers had to go to a place that was profitable. Since then, the Lakers are very typical of LA. Los Angeles is a place of transplants across the nation. Millions travel to LA to fulfill their dreams, enjoy better weather and to make it in the sunshine. The Lakers are very much LA, just like the Dodgers. Both came from other places to do better in California.

of course they still count. They were still the Lakers. Now if they changed their name that might be a different story. Browns/Ravens comes to mind.

Tell me about it :-\. But yeah, in terms of the Lakers Minneapollis titles, I think history should be left in the city that it happened. The fact that Clay Bennet took Seattle's 1979 championship and wants to retire Gary Paytons number makes me want to kill someone.

Since it's recent history, I can understand that. But I have no problem with the Raiders taking their title with them from their Los Angeles days.
With Seattle, what stands out is they changed the name and everything. The Lakers actually came from Detroit as the Gems before moving to Minneapolis. I would never wish to take the Detroit Gems' history because to me, it wasn't the Lakers. But the move from Minneapolis, the Lakers moved to stay alive, even though they won 5 titles and just made it to the finals again with a promising rookie. To me, Minneapolis lost the Lakers as much as the Lakers left. And actually, some people from Minneapolis agree, and will talk about wishing the Showtime era happened in Minneapolis... lol. I know one thing, the West/Baylor era would have been typical Minnesota, just liked the Vikings of the 70's. LOL

They did change the name, but took our history and retired jerseys, even when we do get a new team we have to "share" our history with that fucking shithole city, but I could go on for days about that. I guess as a fan who has seen his team history stolen I feel like history should be left with the cities. You presented a good point with your Raider situation, but with them it was only a matter of moving to a city in the same state, not taken and moved across the country, different situation.

I feel you man, the Northwest stays getting robbed of teams. No matter how much a team is supported corporate greed/government incompitence can fuck everything up. Out of curiosity, what happened with the Grizzlies that made the ownership want to move them?

The grizzlies was an absolute clusterfuck by the NBA.Lets face it they were terrible and for good reason.Absurd handicaps on the franchise didnt allow them to pick 1st overall even though they had the worst record in basketball for a few years straight. So instead of being able to draft Tim duncan 1st overall, they got the 4th pick and got antonio daniels who was a bust.I mean if your trying to expand into a new market and the team is terrible you would think they would allow them to be able to draft the best players but no they these absurd rules that disallowed them from having the first pick
Stu Jackson is another big reason for their failure, the guy was and always will be a complete idiot.Mark Cuban has gone on record as saying the NBA was the sole reason the franchise went so wrong.hes stated that if the nba made him operate dallas in the same way, that dallas would no longer have a team either.he quoted that int he marketing department the grizzlies only had two employees under jackson and sterns watch.Meanwhile most teams have upwards of 40.
then they allowed the sale of the team to some owner who promised he wouldnt movet he franchise, and the first thign he did was move the franchise. The funniest part of it is,that memphis has less fans and have been terrible as well and continue to be run poorly.

Yeah a similar thing happened in Seattle when Howard Schultz (Starbucks owner and gazzilionare) sold them to Clay Bennet from Oklahoma., not cause he thought he'd keep them here, but cause he was the highest bidder. Even though he said he was gonna keep the team here everyone knew he was lieing (which is was lead to a slight decrease in support for the teams last two years here). Once Bennet had control of the team he did everything he could to destroy our fan base. It started with trading Ray Allen, then dismantling our team so they could tank and get good draft picks in OKC, it's not a coincidence that the teams last year in Seattle was EASILY their worst year in the franchises history. That cock sucker also wouldn't allow Kevin Durant or Jeff Green to talk on the radio or get involved in the community. Then to cap it all off Greg Nickels (Seattle mayor) sold the Key Areana lease to Clay Bennet which allowed him to move the team two years early. The Sonics should have been in Seattle playing the Lakers this year, not fuckin shithole OKC. This year could've been similar to '95 when Griffey saved the Mariners from moving, but instead our gay ass government didn't do shit about it. Makes me fuckin sick.

Well... the New Orleans Jazz were dumb enough to trade their draft pick for Gail Goodrich. I mean Goodrich was a Hall of Famer, but he was in his twilight years, and the Jazz wanted him bad enough they traded their first round pick. In 1978-1979, they had the worst record in the NBA, but the Lakers had the rights to that draft and got Magic.
Lakers have always had great management. They mastered trades for picks, and the Lakers have made the most of the late draft. Too bad other franchises don't run like the Lakers.

Drafts are always a total toss up I never give teams too much credit or bash teams,of any sport for their draft picks.Nothing is certain in this world.

go lakers fuck haters 8)

the Celtics have 17 world titles. the Lakers have 15.
the Celtics are 9-2 against the Lakers in the finals.
Phil is so insecure that he has to cry to the refs through the media about Kevin Garnett before Garnett even gets to smack around that little bitch Gasol.
man I can't wait til Boston wins this

yeah, but picks like Derek Fisher, Devean George, Marc Gasol (even though he didn't play for LA, as a second rounder his becoming a great player for the Grizzles), Ronny Turiaf, Elden Campbell, Vlade Divac, Brian Cook. The Lakers have mastered the late draft by picking role players to complement their stars.
I mean, is Derek Fisher even a starter in most teams, but on the Lakers his excelled in leading the team on the court and keeping everyone on the same page, offering that leadership that every team needs from their point guard.
Turiaf was energy off the bench.
George was a D-III player who became a starter next to Shaq, Kobe, Malone and Payton.
Campbell was one of the best defenders, and one of the few that could defend Shaq one on one in Shaq's prime. (watch the 2004 NBA Finals, it was Campbell's defense that allowed Detroit to focus on everyone else instead of double teaming Shaq like every other team had to do.
Cook was a great shooting big man that was great off the bench in Shaq era.
Gasol is now proving that the Pau Gasol trade was not a complete rip off, and Memphis might have saved tons of money and still have a very good big man.
Jerry West was great at evaluating talent, and Mitch has learned from West. This is something that has served the Lakers well, and it's needed for a team to continue to build titles, and only miss the playoffs 5 times in the last 50 years.

lol its not JUST about how they are run. The Spurs are run just as well...but agents will tell their clients to go to LA before San Antonio or anywhere really. The media exposure, celebrity atmosphere...etc makes it far more desireable for bigtime players. San Antonio has been amazing in the draft for the fact that they typically dont get picks anywhere in the first half of rounds (except Duncan). Its free agency where LA has the big advantage. Whats the last draft pick the Lakers have had that was really amazing? Kobe?

The Lakers didn't draft Kobe and they have had only one high draft pick (higher then #19th pick) in the last 15 years.
Lower round picks in the last 15: Fisher (#24), Devean George (#23), Walton (#32), and M. Gasol (#48).

I know they didnt draft him. I wasnt saying that they did. But they traded for him immediately. which is essentially the same thing as trading for the pick..and drafting him. Regardless my point was that it isnt the draft so much where they have done well. Its with free agency, etc.

Well if you look at their current roster, Artest is the only one of any significance that was picked up via free agency. Bryant, Gasol, Odom, and Brown were traded for. Fisher, Bynum, Walton, Farmar, and Vujacic were drafted.

And Im not only referring to this current Laker squad but Laker squads of the last decade. The current Laker squad hasnt gotten shit from the draft. Bynum is ok when he can stay on the floor. But he is too early in his career to even judge with the time he has missed. Shaquille O'neal, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, etc...all high profile free agents joining the Lakers. Im not sure why youre arguin with me, maybe you think Im dissin the lakers lol. Im just pointing out that the draft isnt where they have really made things happen like M-Dogg was sayin.

Malone and Payton came to the Lakers so they can have a shot with a contender, not because of L.A.'s atmosphere. Shaq is the only won who did that recently.

Fisher, Bynum, Walton, Farmar, and Vujacic were drafted.
thus the "etc".
Youre arguing just to argue at this point.

Yet the Lakers could draft Magic back when they already had Jabbar :D Or draft Jerry West back when they already had Elgin Baylor.
Shit is not fair!
The Lakers went 25–50 before drafting West with the 2nd pick, dipshit.
LOL stop getting provoked so easily.
How have they went before drafting Magic with the 1st pick? :D
Lakers have always had great management. They mastered trades for picks, and the Lakers have made the most of the late draft. Too bad other franchises don't run like the Lakers.
lol its not JUST about how they are run. The Spurs are run just as well...but agents will tell their clients to go to LA before San Antonio or anywhere really. The media exposure, celebrity atmosphere...etc makes it far more desireable for bigtime players. I think though the Lakers are much better at trades than free agency. They traded for Kobe, they traded for Gasol. The biggest free agents they have signed have been Shaq, Payton and Malone for a year, and Ron Artest. But LA is much better at trades to gain key players and drafting their role players.

those are the best players you guys have had over the last decade not named Kobe tho man. You can say Gasol is better than Artest, but he is in no way better then any of those other players. Anyways, its irrelevant. My point was only that the draft isnt where the Lakers excel. They got lucky in a trade for Gasol that worked out bigtime in their favor. And took a gamble on Kobe which did pay off obviously. But it wasnt a real genius decision...there was no point in keeping Divac at that point and the Hornets just happened to take him. Kobe wasnt considered a sure thing as an all time great at that point, obviously. He was drafted 13th and traded for an aging Divac.

I don't think Kobe would have ended up on the Lakers if he wasn't a dick who denied to play for any other team... so you can't exactly give their "awesome management" any credit for this.

17 titles to 15 titles.
of course they still count. They were still the Lakers. Now if they changed their name that might be a different story. Browns/Ravens comes to mind.
I heard from fellow ravens fans that the nfl somehow act like the colts were never in baltimore & won their 1st sb in indy & that never happened. But its really stupid that some people still wanna act like the ravens are the old cleveland browns still, when the 1st ravens team was out, only 13 players was left from the 1995 clowns team. Matt Stover was the last member of that team until he was released. The current clowns team just sucks & don't draft good. Nobody calls the Yankees the old baltimore orioles, & they were. Might explain why there's mainly yankees fans at orioles games. And nobody once called the current baltimore orioles the old st. louis browns, & they were.
L.A. still won a SB with the raiders.
