Title: Bud Selig is an asshole
Post by: theremedy360 on June 03, 2010, 03:18:27 PM
NEW YORK — Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig won't reverse an umpire's admitted botched call that cost Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game.

Mr. Selig said on Thursday that MLB will look at expanded video replay and umpiring, but didn't specifically address umpire Jim Joyce's bad call on Wednesday.

A baseball official familiar with the decision confirmed to The Associated Press that the call was not being reversed. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that element was not included in Mr. Selig's statement.

Mr. Joyce said he erred on what would've been the final out in Detroit, where the Tigers beat Cleveland 3-0. The umpire personally apologized to Mr. Galarraga and hugged him after the game, then took the field at Comerica Park on Thursday in tears.

Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski had said the team wouldn't ask MLB to overturn the call. The mistake denied Mr. Galarraga the first perfect game in Tigers history, and the 21st for MLB.

Mr. Joyce ruled Cleveland's Jason Donald safe at first base, but later said he got it wrong.

Mr. Galarraga, who was barely known outside of Detroit before this week, and Mr. Joyce, whose career had flourished in relative anonymity, remained trending topics on Twitter more than 12 hours after the game ended. At least one anti-Joyce Facebook page popped up and firejimjoyce.com was launched.

"I was thinking if the umpire says he made a mistake on replay, I'd call it a no-hitter, perfect game. Just scratch it," St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "If I was Mr. Selig, in the best interest of the game. The guy got it and I'd give him his perfect game. But here again, I should just shut my mouth."

At least they're going to expand the use of replay, well they're thinking about it but they better implement something.

Did Bud Selig at least say why he's not gonna reverse it? While it's pretty obvious why he won't (he doesn't want to form a slippery slope), I want to at least hear any MLB executives say it.

There is nothing in soccer that compares to a perfect game.  Games are ruined by the refs in both sports yes, but a perfect game is just something else.

LOL @ one bad call. There have been 21 perfect games in MLB history and without this call there would have been 3 within 2 months! Talk about a history fail. I understand that he felt bad about it but Selig needs to man up and give the kid the game, the play was SO OBVIOUS. If you wanna accept that BS happens in Soccer then fine, but when evidence is so obvious and nothing is done pisses me off.

Jim Joyce should be fined or some shit; it's so blantantly obvious he went out of his way to break up the perfect game, it's sickening.

even if he could convince everyone else, he was calling what he saw; not only was it bang-bang, but you called him safe; people like him are why i hate sports.

corrupt ass officiating. >:(

This type of shit happens in every sport. In this instance, it cost a pitcher a chance at being in the record books for something only 21 people have ever done. So yeah, its kind of a big deal.

As far as the call goes, like it or not...they CANT reverse that call.  They can change the rules, get out of the stone age and implement instant replay. Which they should. In Basketball one bad call doesnt drastically change the outcome of the game typically...same goes for Football, most of the time. In Baseball though, with their typically only being so many scoring opportunities...you cant afford to have missed calls.

But again, you cant go back and change it now.  Its unfortunate, but it happened in the course of the game...and the game is over.

Another reason 2 not bother with mlb.  Fuck Selig, he should burn in hell with the other idiot commissioners, adolf stern & gary buttwipe.  I still hate the tigers, actually didn't want them to get the perfect game, except if its against the twins, yankees, nationals or madres.  But that call was bullshit.  Selig coulda been a hero & overturned it.  They better have instant replay used now, fuck the human element.  The human element can be biased you know, the instant replay can't.  I guess if espn's 2 favorite teams had this travesty done to them, Selig woulda overturned it in an instant.

It's like what I say on these talk shows that have lie detector tests when guilty lying fools be still be denying & saying the test lied.  UN-UH!  Lie detector tests don't lie, PEOPLE DO!

you cant go back after the fact though man. I agree that replay should be in use. But once the game is over, youre creating a Pandoras Box by overturning the call. That was simply ONE call in the game. Every other call during the game led up to that ONE call. What should we do....go back and review every single call throughout every game and change them accordingly? What if they overturned that call...giving him the perfect game....and late found out that a runner was called out at first in the 3rd inning...but was really safe, would they then overturn that call and take the perfect game away again? Its just too much at that point. Replay solves everything because they can fix the call right THEN.

He could have changed it for the best interest of baseball clause and I highly doubt anybody in the league would have minded, they probably would have been happy to see it happen. He fucked up on this.

I just dont see how you change this call after the game is over. We have the benefit of replay. We can go back and change a ton of calls throughout history. I guarantee we can change Superbowl winners based on missed calls if we chose to. World Series winners probably. NBA championships. You cant make an exception just for this ONE missed call, and say fuck all the rest. All you can do is change the replay rule for the future to keep things like this from happening.

^ I agree to an extent, but this situation just seems like the exception to the rule. It clearly didn't have an impact on the game and the play was so obvious, let alone the fact that it should have ended the game. I think they shoulda just given the kid his perfect game.

I know what u mean man. I just think that its best when there are no grey areas. You either overturn calls after games, or you dont. Once you start saying..."we will overturn this one...because its important, and not this other one...cus its not that important" Then you make the rule subjective and only increase the chance of scrutiny. Its unfortunate, but most of the time when a rule changes...its because SOMEbody was wronged by the previous rule. Maybe this will be the catalyst that gets MLB on board with instant replay.
