Title: Round of 16's Bracket 2: Germany vs England, Argentina vs Mexico
Post by: Javier on June 25, 2010, 01:58:35 PM
By far the bracket with the most "powerhouse" teams with history and the team that doesn't have the same history but they're there and gives the opposing team a hell of a game.

Germany vs England

Argentina vs Mexico

Go Mexico 8) Fuck Arg, revenge for '06.

As for Germany vs England, normally I'd say Germany, we played the better tournament so far, England is weak as usual, they still don't have a capable goalie, England has a Germany/ penalty trauma.... But, so many things went wrong before and during the tournament, we lack experienced players. I wouldn't be surised anymore if we lost against England, which would be a shame, since they are, and have always been shit in the last 20+ years.

People can consider this bias, but here are my thoughts on how Mexico has a good chance of beating Argentina

1.  Argentina is weak in the midfield, while Mexico's strength is there.  Ball possession might be pretty even, and wouldn't be surprising if Mexico has a slight edge.  Mascherano is fantastic, but his partner in midfield has either been Veron or Maxi.  One is too old and the other is offensive minded and loves going to the side.  Meanwhile, Mexico has Torrado Marquez and Efrain Juarez (who's going to a European club for sure after this World Cup).  So far Mascherano and Veron/Maxi hasn't been a problem, mainly because the teams that faced Argentina all stayed back and defend.

2.  Center Backs haven't looked good for Mexico.  Samuel is much more comfortable with Inter Milan which plays a deep line defense, meanwhile in Argentina the defensive line has been playing up high.  That's exactly how Mexico was able to exploit France and score on them.

3.  Sidebacks are iffy.  Heinze thinks he's a CB at times and leaves his side open ( Gio Dos Santos and Juarez might be open because of this).  Jonas Gutierrez has trouble with Nigeria and South Korea's attackers, and he couldn't even really do that good attacking either.  Salcido and hopefull if Vela plays will be able to take him.

The biggest key is going to be play some great defense on Argentina's 3 forwards.  Odds are Argentina passes, but these weaknesses will fuck them up in the long run if they manage to pass.

i hope argentina wins, i want the later rounds to be more exciting with the big teams

mexico is a great side this year BUT they still miss that champions touch, they're still not a top tier team

this is how i would categorize the current 16

tier 1; brazil, germany, spain, argentina, holland

tier 2; mexico, england, uruguay, USA

tier 3; portugal, paraguay, chile

tier 4; ghana, japan, slovakia, s. korea

LMAO at Portugal tier 3. Worse than Mexico, Uruguay, and USA  :D  Portugal was in the group of death and scored the most goals outta any team (tied with Argentina 7) and allowed the LEAST goals thus far (tied with Uruguay for 0)

Anyways

Germany & Argentina will win setting up a great quarter finals match

i think this one is really hard to call, if England play to their potential (which they rarely do), then they could beat the Germans. however, i think on this occasion it'll be Germany who win.

As for Argentina-Mexico, i just cant look past Argentina getting further, although it will be a tough match, as Mexico have been pretty solid so far.

so ill say Argentina-Germany next round  8)

mexico takes out argentina. Here's why.. ARG defense is suspect and Mexico's coach javier aguirre finally gets it, and puts in Chicharrito Hernandez, and sits old ass cauhtemoc blanco down til the final 20 min of the game when everyone is tired. Mexico's a beast at full strength, they'll be able to take ARG down 2-1

crazy how the south american countries besides brazil and argentina are criticized... paraguay and chili are deadly !

Mexico just needs to hope that messi doesn't do a hand of god like action and they'll win it.

Rooney will wake up and kick some german butt.

Two wrongs make a right. And I'm always right. All I need is a Uruguay, Argentina, or Brazil to win and what I said 4 years ago comes completely true.

Drop my props all you want gentleman, but I called the World Cup the whore of Babylon back in 04 and the whore is thirsty.

Aguirre completely changed the formation and it just fucked us up.  I wouldn't have minded Mexico losing, but lose with playing with your best squad and best football too.

Totally outclassed , defensivly horrible JT out of position, not concentrating, upson much to slow. Rio takes a lot of stick but the first two goals never would have been scored if he had been playing.

Both games had huge errors from the officials, linesman are always going to have a hard job and mistakes will be made on offside decisions. There is no reason why there cant be something on the line to signify if the ball goes in or not. Not that it would have made any difference yesterday, as England were a shambles. Its time to rebuild and move players on Lampard, Gerrard, Terry etc

Argentina look real good at the moment, its going to take something special to stop them.

Nice goal from Hernandez  8)
