I saw this movie for the first time today & I thought it was fantastic.
Lemme cut to the chase, did you guys think he was Andrew Laeddis? From what I heard & saw, it seemed up for interpretation.
Personally, I thought he was actually Laeddis, until he was sitting on the stoop with "his partner, Chuck" & said something like "Living a monster or dying a hero" & Chuck gave him a double take.
So yeah, I don't think he was.
Regardless, Martin made a fucking gem. :o

Great movie. Nah I didn't think he was Andrew Laeddis. but I was starting to think that he was going crazy during the movie but then in the end he was crazy from get-go. well they fooled me, lol ;D

my understanding of it was at the end of the movie, they thought they had finally managed to get him to snap out of his "fantasy", or thats what he had led them to believe after the scene towards the end in the lighthouse (i think?)
so when he referred to the doctor as his partner chuck again at the end, they realised that he was never gonna return to reality, and so he was never gonna be free...so yeah i think he was Laeddis, but hed created this other character to deal with what hed done...
great movie, a little while since i watched it so some of my recollections may be a bit sketchy

from my understanding she wasnt real, again that was part of the story he'd created in his own head, i may be wrong tho lol

^Smooth interpretation.
He could very well be Laeddis, because thinking of it now, he clearly saw "Chuck" laying dead on the cliff, then saw billions of rats which was WAY too much & then maybe created that doctor in the cave.
Another thing that might of given it away, it was subtle, but when the power went out & Di Caprio beat the shit out of that prisoner & another orderly came & asked "Chuck" to help him take him somewhere & Di Caprio was about to give a hand & the orderly was like "NO! Not you, go take a walk somewhere".
Or when Di Caprio was interviewing patiences & the one girl who took his book & wrote "RUN" starting spazzing out when he asked is she knew Laeddis.
MAYBE HE WAS LAEDDIS, GOD DAMN!

yeah, I was having some doubts too, analyzing this and that, but then I remembered that he was picturing the girl(his daughter) in his head long before the doctor played by ben kingsley showed him the pictures of his family. great movie, scorsese never disappoints, one of the goats.

Really? It was the complete opposite for me.
Then again, my friends ruined it for me & told me he was Laeddis; so I watched the whole start thinking that he was looking for himself. I saw him as an mentally unstable person when I should of thought he was a Fed. :-\

just watched this the other day one of my friends told me it was the wackest movie ever so i was pleasantly suprised

While watching the movie, I was intrigued by it, because it is themed around the mind control experiments the U.S. was doing right after World War 2. I've been doing a lot of reading on that subject, and I was surprised how accurately the film describes these practices. I was therefore very surprised about the ending Scorsese has given the movie.
Basically, it turns out that Dicaprio's character had made all the stuff up, and has created a second personality to play out this plot again and again. There is not a trace of mind control experimenting going on at the island, and the people who work there are actually very nice guys. What I don't understand is how Dicaprio's character would make up such an elaborate fantasy that is actually EXACTLY what went down at that time. All of it is fact, not fiction. Ex nazi's were employed by the U.S. government after WW2, to continue their mind control experiments (project Paperclip). They used all kinds of hallucinant drugs, conducted brain surgury, torture, and experimented on unknowing subjects. A lot of official government documents have been released to the public by now, covering projects like MK Ultra (look it up if you don't know it).
So, Scorsese is telling us that this guy kills his wife, and because of this trauma he creates a second personality. This is very plausible. What's strange (and nearly impossible imo), is that this guy has all his facts straight about these secret government projects, up to very specific details like the methods they use and the reasons why.
I think one commenter had an interesting take on the movie:
"...Throughout the film we are made to believe that the System (The Island/Ben kinsley and the other doctors) was doing something evil (Its a parallel to 911, cheney, bush, etc.). Of course in the end it was the “hero/rebel/911 Truther” that was the lunatic, and the system was actually fine. They want people to think they are crazy for questioning the system."

Great movie. Genius in fact. If you google Shutter Island ending explained, there is someone who wrote a blog and explains all kinds of things. He talks about how the movie had to be filmed in order to surprise someone watching it for the 1st time, and then tons of clues will make sense when you watch it again. He explains a lot of the clues, and man it just really goes to show how well this movie was done.
In the end he is finally convinced of who he really is, but that is just too much torture for him. That explains those last couple of lines to his therapist. He knows who he really is, but he doesn't want to live with that truth. He would rather be lobotomized.
Google that shit and read about it...you will have an even greater appreciation for the movie.
The movie had me fooled for a great while. I really thought he was an FBI agent and the island was gonna take him hostage.

that why they fucked the movie to give that unnecessary something suggesting that Laedis knows who he is on end ::) ::)
that why:

it was a pretty good movie but so predictable. I was told all sorts about this film about how it was great etc and i was knda expecting it to be scary for some reason lol.
Anyway it was pretty easy to predict he was the 67th patient and that he was that guy he was always talking about. It was made almost completely obvious when he met the other guy in ward C who tells him something like 'you did this to me' or someshit like that.
I was still hoping i was wrong though when he was in the lighthouse and being convinced and told of who he really was and that there was another sort of ending...but nope lol, exactly how i predicted.
I liked the last two lines though. Because just before, he speaks to his friend 'chuck' about how the place is bad etc and they thing he is just starting his thing all over again but when he says them two lines, he basically is letting it be known, he was infact aware of who he was now and what had happened in his life and where he was etc, but he basically had nothing to live for ...hence the two lines and just accepts his fate.
