Dunno if this was posted, but revisiting it courtesy of XXL Mag. Interesting to see when ppl started popping off and dropping off. What artists flopped with promotion and what artists blew with no promotion...

Beastie Boyz kiled it that hard. 5 Million right out the gate. I believe it has sold 9 million to date.
-
I dunno why Def Jam even put out Unladylike, Jamboree & Lil Ru - they did absolutely no promo for any of these albums.
-
who the hell is fly? and when did rev run make an album? and the beastie boys pushed 4 and some change on it's initial run trust me i know it was a big deal cause it out sold raising hell and was the top selling rap album till hammer's second album dropped yell
-
Lol who is Unladylike? Selling only 2,000 copies is hard. I could do that shit in 3 months without leaving the city.

Hell fucking yeah. That License To Ill is still in my top 20 albums... great backstory it took about 2 years to record, w/ Rubin saying "it's gotta get done organically, can't rush it." Totally organic too, one of early hip hops shining masterpieces.
Now that I think about it, Def Jams 1st 6 releases are now viewed as Hip Hop classics... how times have changed...
-
there were many classic over the years...
-
once again no twinz and no b.g. knoccout & dre'sta... smh
-
So it's true, Warren G saved Def Jam at one point.

So it's true, Warren G saved Def Jam at one point.
According to the Book Def Jam Inc, both Warren and Meth singlehandedly saved them - Also, the song was on the Above The Rim Soundtrack, so Deathrow got the points on ALBUM sales... but the single sales were all going to Def Jam - that single sold 2 mill, plus having his album to release too? Major $$$$ for Def Jam, and apparently, Suge was not too happy about missing out on all that cash.
Side story, Meth was the 1st Wu member to get a solo deal, but the A&R person @ the time wanted both either Meth and Ol' Dirty... Lyor could only sign one, they chose Meth; Crazy, to think Ol' Dirty having the 1st Wu solo album, it kinda makes you think how shit would have been different if Dirty signed to Def Jam and they ran with him like they did with Meth...

Yeah I realized BG Knoccout and Dre'sta was missing once I started checking all the Def Jem West Coast artist - which reminds me...WC's Ghetto Heisman also isn't listen.
What's really strange is Ja Rule's "The Last Temptation" isn't there. I know that album sold atleast 2 mill so thats weird that one would be left off.

According to the book acts like Bg and Dre were technically signed to Def Jam, but distributed under an imprint... i forgot the name - but artist they didn't feel were "super bankable" they put oin this one, really low budget imprint, it was so bad, artist under this imprint would go to BIG stores and their shit wasn't even in there, they were only getting shipped to mom and pop spots.
