Complex just put together this list.
http://best.complex.com/lists/the-50-greatest-vocoder-songs
-
California Love and a couple Roger Troutman songs are the only times I've felt talk boxes were necessary.
-
how can you not gonna have a zapp/roger troutman track at #1. kind of decent list, a lot of old school hip-hop and electro, but i'd be choosing way more funk tracks than what's on there.
-
damn shutterbug already on this?
-
"Black Superman" is the best Vocoder song ever.
Talkbox, that's a whole other story, best instrument known to man, God bless you Roger!
-
Computer Love/More Bounce only 7th on this list? Wow.
-
Roger was the first to use it?
-
Cool, thanks for the link, even if the ranking is contestable there must be some cool songs to discover

What about some DJ Quik songs? he uses it pretty good.
-
Why the fuck is that Afrika Bambaataa "track" second or even on the list at all while Zapp is in seventh? Fuck that.
Still, lots of good tracks. Egyptian Lover, Battlecat, Mac Dre, Above The Law, New Order, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, and Grandmaster Flash can't go wrong there 8).

No I think he was one of the people to popularize it. Or rather, let it be known.
Then again there's been plenty who have used a talk box before him.
-
and yeah Quik should definitely have some tracks in here, one of the nicest on the talkbox after Roger. I'd nominate Adina Howard's 'Freak And U Know It' as a classic talkbox track from him that plenty of people know.
-
I think people need to notice that the Complex list actually just says Vocoder (not talkbox in brackets like this thread says), so thats probably why less West Coast stuff is on there. Some of the tracks are a bit rubbish on that list though and they should definitely have more funk records on there.
I'd like to see a strictly 50 best talkbox songs of all time list though.
