Cracked the shit out of my screen and now the glass pieces are chipping away, phone still works though. I've seen some do it yourself replacement kits and videos on youtube. Wondering if any iphone owners have tried replacing the screen themselves and if you can recommend a reliable site to purchase this kit. THanks for your help

i got my friends old iphone 3g that got ran over by his truck. doing some research i found out that there's two pieces to the screen. one is the digitizer (the touch panel) and the LCD. the only part you need to get is the digitizer. it's pretty easy to swap out just be really careful when taking apart the iphone as to not yank any of the wires in there. go on ebay and buy a digitizer WITH iphone repair tools and adhesive. there's a lot of great tutorials on how to open your iphone on youtube and get the digitizer set up.

thanks a lot man. shits pretty cheap i just found a kit for 10 bucks on ebay with free shipping.

actually how would i know if i need to replace the lcd too? my shit is broken around the ear speaker and the glass chipped away there and i can see the inside of the phone.
-
it sounds like just the glass is broken. you would know if the LCD was broken trust me lol

i think i just made my phone useless. replaced the screen put it back together and restarted it. screen shows up fine except the touchscreen is unresponsive!! im pretty sure i had the connectors snapped in properly. Ive read online that a factory restore might get it to work and that was a fail. any suggestions?

the 3g breaks too easily. My 3gs has been dropped down a flight of stairs, in snowbanks, on concrete, on slate tile etc etc the shit wont break!
-
Fuck yeah!! it was the connectors.. I broke down yesterday, decided to give it another shot this morning. I would have been pissed if I paid some dude off craiglist 20 bucks to snap in those connectors. Thanks for your help Based God.

no problem man. it's always cheaper to do it yourself especially if you have the balls to do it 8)

god damn it. so after having problems with hearing through the little speaker hole and the sensor not working too well (when you put the phone to your face to talk). I decide im gonna fix these problems. i'm feeling like a pro at disassembling that shit. i made the mistake of not being as careful as i should have with the lcd screen. fucked it up now the display wont work. looks like im ordering a new lcd screen off ebay!!!

You could always we replace the entire phone with an android based device. As a matter of fact maybe you should

not too hard. the adhesive tape had shifted and covered part of the speaker and the sensor so i just removed it and put a little glue on the edge of the frame and the digitizer.

That's my plan and I will when my contract is up in January. So I'm stuck with this phone for a couple more months and then im just gonna use it as an ipod touch when i replace it.
