Learned about this in class today.
https://www.sellaband.com/en/projects/publicenemy/incentives
SELL A BAND makes the consumer the label. You fund the project, but that's also gets you certain advantages. For the certain amount you donate you get certain incentives, which range from revenue percentage on the sales of the album, executive producer credits, studio visits, and live performances at your home.
There is a set budget for the album, and once enough funding has been locked in, they will record the album.
Public Enemy is at 93 percent. I dunno what the pound to dollar conversion of that project budget is, maybe someone can help me out. But I love the idea!
There are a few other sites like this, just thought Public Enemy was a good example.

now rappers won't have to sell drugs to fund their studio time!

Damn. This looks possibly lucrative, especially where a few of the artists are concerned, but how can the investors be assured of compensation? I'm fearful that if I were to participate I'd just get ganked by some asshole buying blow and hookers.

Apparently Sellaband is a scam after all.
