I don't get it...who even watches music videos these days? Do they even play them on TV anymore?
Do music videos just air on the net or what is the deal these days?
I'm not complaining, but it just seems kinda weird for a greedy label like Interscope to actually do 6 music videos for the album, considering that will just cut into their profits.
-
What is there to get? A video obviously gives songs more attention and exposure.
-
It depends who you are. "Not Afraid" & "Love The Way You Lie" have hundreds of millions of views.
A guy like J. Cole wouldn't be doing much justice with one; but Dre is a huge name.
But six videos means six mainstream friendly songs, so I don't know if this is necessarily a good thing. :-X
-
man you better believe that interscope promo machine is going to go nuts
we going to be seeing dre everywhere soon lol, videos will be on some massive budget shit too
-
but where do you watch the videos? See I grew up in the age where MTV actually played music videos all day every day. So there is still demand for them on the internet? I'm 30 years old...I don't know a single person who watches music videos...so is it just the young kids come on the internet and watch them or what?
of course a video gives songs more exposure and attention, but at what cost? Going on tour in every major city in america and giving the tickets away for free will also give your album plenty of exposure and attention...yet I don't see that happening...
I think it is odd for Interscope to promote this album with so many music videos...especially if they are costly to make...
Back in the day you used to watch mtv several times a week (maybe every weekday) and you would constantly see these videos over and over. If anything, I would go on the net and watch a video once and thats it. It is not nearly the same promotion today as it was 10-20 years ago.
-
Eminem has 3 videos with 100 million views.
-
Outside of the US they still play music videos lol Ive got like literally 25 music channels which do nothing but play videos all day long and im in the UK
-
wow, I had no idea anyone watched music videos anymore.
-
Music videos are not unlike a lot of the other elements of mainstream music. It's in bad shape but the big name artists are still making money with it. Detox is the biggest album Interscope has had in awhile so I'd expect some money will go into videos. If it's an established artist, videos can do a good job of pushing the music. It's just hard to use them to break someone on a smaller level.

Dre songs are always mainstream oriented (sonically I mean)
-
Music videos are even more watched today than they were in the 90's because people can view them instantly on youtube. And the big stars usually have adds before many of their youtube video's, so I'm sure that's bringing in advertisement dollars to the artist and label. So Dre is going to be making some money off those 6 video's I think. Again, anything out of Dre's mouth you can't ever believe till it actually happens, not because Dre is a liar, but because Dre is a perfectionist, so if he's not feeling the video thing later on down the road, then he may say forget it.
-
why is dre doing 6 music videos?
becoz spending time on that will prolong him from dropping detox 8)

yeah

ill watch music videos on BET, Muchmusic and sometimes on youtube
-
because its detox!

smh... complete ignorance. film is an art form, by taking your time and actually making great videos you can make something new worth enjoying. why NOT make a video?
I would love if Dre made a Runaway-esque movie.
-
i hope he'll direct at least some of them.
Also i would appreciate alot of huge cameos.

yeah, maybe ignorance on your part
The corporate music industry is a money making industry, NOT an art festival.
Interscope doesn't give a shit about art. They only care about making profits. A label like Interscope doesn't let its artists decide if they want to make videos...not even Dre. He has some say I'm sure, but bottom line, the exec's at interscope have to approve it.
-
maybe they gon do like 3 high-budget videos and 3 directed by dah dah...
btw, detox supposed to be 10 tracks long, right? why doin vids for 60% of the album? i think they should shoot 10 and put the DVD out.

looks like we actually will get some music from Dre and now muthafucka isnt happy that there is too much shit from him.. what an idiot
-
because he can do it.

well i can. just like somebody have told it before. 6 videos will probably mean 6 mainstream friendly songs. Unfortunately after hearing Kush i'm far from believing that Dre wants to change anything in nowadays mainstream rap. No, he (or Jimmy or both) wants to earn as much $ as possible so they just trying to fit recent radio standards. Some of you guys must be deaf if you hear anything special in "Kush". Damn...this song would fit even Lady Gaga's album (just replace rap verses with Lady Gaga and leave the chorus). There's nothing different than this poppy shit except the piano chords.
So basiclly, there are many people like me who don't feel Kush that much because it's just another poppy single. And these people hope this is one of 2 or 3 songs that are supposed to make units. But 6 videos probably means 6 radio friendly songs... that makes half an album...
i'm so happy Detox is coming but i'm afraid it will flop. flop musically. i'm almost sure it will make a commercial success
-
well radio friendly doesn't have to be a bad thing, look at his past albums.
it's just the supposed timbaland influence that bothers me

yes. i know radio friendly doesn't mean bad. Maybe i wasn;t clear in my previous post.
I was trying to say that after hearing "Kush" i'm afraid Dre is just going to follow recent trends on Detox. I'm afraid we can forget about the fresh air in recent mainstream hip hop. And recent mainstream hip hop is just bad. It lacks fat drumbeats, it lacks simplicity (yes! simplicity!) it lacks "bounce effect", it doesn't make you wanna bang your head to the wall. Instead of that we have too complex beats with load of shitty effects, synthesizers and stuff... most of you guys forgot that simple beats are the best beast (still dre for example)....
and radio friendly song doesn't need chick singing on a hook... or a male popstar singing on the hook like he was a gay. Look at the 2001 singles - Still DRE (no singing hook), Forgot About Dre (no singing hook), Next Episode (some singing moments with Nate - but this man was singing like a MAN!). Sorry to say that but nowadays mainstream rap is for females or retarded males or gay males or emo suicidals. If Dre follows this trend Detox will be an album for the retards.... that's just my opinion.
PS. Damn... Kush is one of few weed songs that doesn't make me wanna roll a blunt....
PS. It's not that i don't like singing hooks. Maybe i'm just too heterosexual to stand gay hooks.... ;)

Well maybe your actually gay? People who have to prove their heterosexuality are actually gay more often than not.
You mentioned the word several times in your post which had me raise an eyebrow. If you think about dicks when you smoke a blunt maybe you should self-reflect.

yes music videos have many stations they play them on, and ONLY music videos. MTV and BET arent the only cats in town n e more. I'd say more of a benefactor of this is the internet, where videos go viral, or if you dont know what that means, it spreads like fucking aids. Its huge. Bigger than perhaps mtv from before, cuz now you can have the music video of your choice in say your own facebook page or something. Youtube, and the other places like it, make the music video easier to access to the avg joe. 6 may be too many, but shit you can make cheap ass but effective music videos. Check king gordy's sing for the dead or king gordy and kuniva and bizaare + others "where you at" or bizarre and king gordy's "1980" or tech n9ne's "Red Nose" You can make cheap music videos now not those epic million dollar helicopter yacht biggie smallas hypnotize or california love type videos. Hype williams doesnt have to produce yo video n e more for it to be a winner.

Not here.
The only music channel that occasionally plays videos will go digital in 2011.
I don't see the point in 6 videos either, unless they go the radio friendly route and in that case this will be representative of what Detox will sound like. I'm skeptical, but hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

You mean like with acid-spitting robot spiders, gigantic heat-seeking bullets, and Tom Selleck?

maybe you should stop taking every single word seriously ;)
and if you can't read between the lines i'll just let you know that it had nothing to do with proving my heterosexuality... it was all about my taste of music.
I just don't like when man is singing like he was a girl or at least castrated man. This has more to do with boys bands than rap music. Of course some high pitched male vocals are cool sometimes (even Nate was singing with high voice sometimes) but most of them sounds gay to me (yes i've just used this word again ;) ).
And i have no idea how the hell you came up with that dicks and blunts thing ;) by self-experience?
and one more thing - you've used "gay" word two times in your post plus you've used "dick" word too which had me raise an eyebrow. Are you a gay? After counting how many times i've used "gay" word it looks like i'm more gay than you but you're still gay tho.... ;)
No offence to you man... i'm just having a laugh at this one
peace...

I'm not gonna get into a childish argument with you over this. The point is people don't try and sing "gay," that's just the way their genetics are. Describing it like that is immature and inaccurate.
For example, the biggest pop star in the world (Michael Jackson), could be accused of the same thing but somehow it is overlooked. Styles make songs, especially when you blend certain things together.
-
No offense to anyone but sometimes, we make this shit called hip hop so damn complicated. As Dre once said back in the day, just "Buy it and Bump it". What I love about Kush is that most heads especially Dre fans love the damn song, Gay hook, no gay hook/singing whatever. Those of u that don't like it, oh well, better luck next time.
