Over the last decade and a half, Redman has been one of the most consistant and charismatic MC’s in the game. Whether it is his dope and hilarious punchlines, or his acting roles, he is one of those figures that always has and catches peoples attention. Redman along with DJ Dice are in Paris, France on the Method Man/Redman tour but took some time out to kick it with I2G and answer some of the fans questions.
Redman has known Dice for over 20 years and they both are one of the originators from the Hit Squad. Dice was also Das EFX’s DJ. Dice also has artists that he is developing.
“My name is authentic, from KRS-One on Represent The Real Hip Hop” says Dice. “Alot of people don’t even know that Redman was DJing for Das EFX for a while.” I was Djing for Tim Dog at the time, but don’t get it twisted, Redman is still nice on the turntables.” Another longtime collaborator with Redman is DJ Twinz, who have been around Red since 1992. “We got mad history together, says Red, big ups to Twinz and big ups to Rockwilder man”. “Everyone out of my camp is doing excellent right now”.
As far as touring and places Redman would like to check out, Israel is high on his list.
“Yo I will do a show in Israel as long as there are no problems.” “I don’t have no discrimination about where I do a show, I will tear that bitch down!” Another place Red is anixous to go to is Africa. “Yo I want to go to Africa, I have never been and want to go to my motherland.” “I ain’t gonna lie though, last time I was supposed to go to Africa, my DJ was kidnapped!” “I heard they did the same to other rappers out there but I cannot give out no names.” “Actually it was Angola, but because I am a good man and God has got my back, my plane flights were fucked up and I did not make it there (laughs).” “I love Africa but I will be god damn that is gonna happen.” “I will go if I can carry a AK, where I can shoot a lion off my ass if it goes down.”
” I heard a lion bit someone in the ass the other day in Africa.” “You would have to get me a tank to perform in Somalia after watching Black Hawk Down, but if they love Red and Meth, and let us come back home, we will go and rock, I don’t give a fuck.” Red even mentions a tour with Limp Bizkit that was supposed to go down. “We waiting on them, Meth and Red is ready to go when they are.” “When I am on tour, I do once and a while forget lines to songs but this is a job to me.” “T is like working somewhere for a long time, it just becomes second nature.” “Now freestyles I don’t do alot of those when I am touring or working on a album because it is so many lyrics that are going around.” “But once I drop a album or mixtape, that is normally when I do more of them, because I don’t give freestyles that you heard somewhere else.”
When the conversation shifts to favorite crews, Red quickly says;
“Yo big ups and much respect to Boot Camp Clik.” “I am a big fan of Boot Camp and someone tell Sean Price to hit me back, we been supposed to do a record together.” “Buckshot too, I am here if you need me.” “I am a big fan of 90′s R&B and hip hop, especially R&B”. “The music is good now but it does not even compare to the stuff in the 90′s.” Big ups to Mr International, Das EFX, Total, Faith Evans.“
Speaking of Faith, Redman’s new album Reggie, is in stores December 7th. One of the collaborations Red is very proud of is the song he did with Faith Evans.
“Big up to her she is Brick City all day.” She is on my album and I am on hers so be sure to pick up her album because it is fiyah!“
The convo then shifts to the first Method Man & Redman album and if there is a extended version of the song Rockwilder.
“Yes there is a whoever said in a interview that there was not is full of bullshit!” “We both had 2 verses a piece but we shortened it because we were having problems coming up with a hook.” “And we are still doing the Blackout 3 album so stay tuned.”
Saukrates, one of the long time MC’s in Redman’s camp is ready to launch his album.
“Yeah right now we are looking for distribution for his album.” “Big ups to Erick Sermon, I am waiting for him to hit me back so we can link up and do some stuff.” “I want him and Parrish to get back in the studio and make another EPMD album.” “Slow funk and not worry about making singles, just a straight up classic record.”
Another hot button topic wise has been the topic of a altercation years ago that occured with 2pac and Keith Murray, one that Keith has spoken about in a previous interview. When asked about it Red had this to say:
“Alot of people ask me about the whole Keith Murray & 2Pac fight and I can’t speak on that.” “I would rather Keith be here to speak on it with me but it was ill.” “I am glad he has always been on the team and he is getting some things together to release to the world.” “I tell people all the time when they ask, who is the wildest person in hip hop and I always say Keith Murray.” “Big ups to him and L.O.D.”
Another personality that Red is very open and candid about is Wendy Williams.
“Alot of people could not stand Wendy Williams back in the day but she is coming up in the world.” “We had some shit I had to square her ass off about but she showed love to Redman I ain’t gonna lie.” “She let people know on her show that Def Jam ain’t doing they thing and I need more promotion on my albums.” “I am sending her my first copy so she can play that on the air because she gets it in.
One thing dear to Red’s heart is the Mary Jane. Red explains why he feels in such a comfort zone recording when he is smoking and how it helps the body.
” Some one asked me why do I smoke weed while I do music.” “I feel that marajuana brings people together and it is a way of life.” There are alot of people that are AIDS patients and have blood born diseases that depend on marajuana.” “They are tired of using Vicadin that is tearing out their stomach lining and switch to marajuana to pacify their pain.” “Those that don’t know out there, do your homework, but Redman fans know about me when it comes to smoking and if you don’t smoke, you might have some problems following me but it’s all good (laughs).”
The conversation shifts to some of Redman’s favorite DJs.
“DJ Scratch is my number one DJ, and I learned alot of things from him and Jam Master Jay.” “DJ Jazzy Jeff is also one of the illest when it comes to precision.” “Big ups to DJ Premier also, he has been telling me for years that he was going to get me a beat, let’s do this.”
In closing before hitting the stage in Paris, Red let’s everyone know about his future plans.
“Everyone be sure to pick up my new album, Reggie on December 7th. “I always hear the ladies say how much they love me, well on the 7th go pick up the album. I have something special coming out soon for them as well. Ladies I am coming out with a shoe, I think I am the biggest fan of women’s feet out there.” I have a foot fetish and it is bad for me (laughs).” I am coming out with high heel, open toe, and sandals as well.” “I am even going to do a calendar with pretty feet in it so only ladies with pretty feet, hit me up.”
