An unsung hero of the Death Row mid-'90s sound, and a Pittsburgh Rap pioneer will see his album released 14 years later.
One of the more anticipated albums of the 1990s was Street Scholars by Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania producer/emcee Sam Sneed. As a Death Row Records artist, Sneed released 1994 hit single "U Betta Recognize" featuring Dr. Dre from the Murder Was The Case soundtrack. However, after co-production and writing credits on label hits between 1994 and 1996, Sneed's album has remained shelved.
Death Row Records, now owned by Toronto, Canada's WIDE Awake Entertainment, announced that is going to change. In the last two years, the new regime at the label founded by Dr. Dre, Marion "Suge" Knight and attorney David Kenner in 1991 has released shelved material from Snoop Dogg, Danny Boy and Kurupt. Sneed's Street Scholars, according to E1 Enterainment, Death Row's present distributor, will be released on January 25, 2011.
Prior to working with Dr. Dre in 1994, Sneed was known as a member of PMD's Hit Squad, producing for Long Island, New York emcee K-Solo (who would also later sign with Death Row). In addition to "U Better Recognize," Sneed worked alongside Dr. Dre on hits such as "Natural Born Killaz" and "California Love." After Dr. Dre left the label he co-founded in 1996, Sneed soon followed after a fight with Suge Knight and Tupac Shakur that has been profiled in several books, most notably Ronin Ro's Have Gun Will Travel.
In the years since Death Row, after surviving a reported brain tumor, Sam Sneed has produced for Busta Rhymes, Capone-N-Noreaga, Beanie Sigel and former Posion Clan emcee JT Money.
Street Scholars is believed to feature Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Dayton, Ohio emcee J-Flexx.
hmmm..

I know I just sound like a hater, but that statement simply has no basis in reality.
-
Is this guy dope? or just average.....it wouldn't be beyond DR to have a dope artist and never release anything by him

Classic. He had a nice buzz back in Death Row's heyday. Over the years has been doing alot of production like for G Unit and Jay Z. Good to hear this will be dropping

sometimes leftovers are better than album cuts

Yes 8)

finally...
i just hope they don't fuck up the quality and I PRAY they don't just release songs that we can already get off of youtube. quality makes a difference but not that much. i like Sam Sneed but if I can already get most of the songs which'll be available on this album off of youtube then i'ma just look over it. the point of buying Death Row was to release music that we couldn't get, not shit we can do a SIMPLE google search on and get, it's redundant.
-
Sam Sneed has a crazy flow! He was one of the dopest on The Source Awards performance in 1995.
-
man i cant wait to get this

Since Sam's album was pretty much completed as far as I know, there's a chance that it got mixed and mastered back in the day so that would be pretty much our only hope to get a nice sounding album. Or maybe since Sneed is involved in the release, he might make sure it sounds good.
-
Damn...I did not know he did that "I Smell Pussy" for G-Unit....Dope Song and the type of joint I could hear The Dogg Pound doing back in the DR days... Sam deserves this and I hope he profits from the release.

It's called "Yo Mammas Face". It's on youtube.

Finally 8)
I just hope they do it the right way this time and are going to put out a real album with OG tracklist etc. They should add a bonus CD to it with the videos to "U Better Recognize" and "Hollywood Squares" in a real DVD or HD quality plus some new Sam Sneed songs on it instead of mixing the new and old tracks on 1 CD.
.no one has ever heard of this dude.....
Just because your a 2Pac dickrider dosen't mean everybody else are just as limited as you are when it comes to music in general so just shut your ignorant ass up.
-
About damn time, I've been waiting for this album for a minute. I hope that it contains songs such as Blueberries and Lady Heroin OG. And I hope the quality of the mastering is acceptable - I mean, I have a pretty good quality version of Lady Heroin OG on mp3, so they surely can't decrease the quality that much for the CD, right?
-
one of death row's many mistakes. lettin' sam slip through their hands. i'm coppin' though.

Dude had a pretty good buzz in '95. Remember the Source Awards performance? He probably got one of the bigger reactions when he performed. Plus would have been a good lead-off album for Death Row East had the shit not gone down at that time.

its obvious that you was a little kid back then. sam's album was highly anticipated after his success with better recognise. i'm 100% sure that he would`ve gone platinum if they would`ve released it in 95. and don`t forget that sneed was the man behind california love, heads ringin and natural born killaz, dre just took his work for small change
-
Damn, I'm really hyped about this shit. I really hope it's all old material. He should save the new shit for another release. Donno why we gotta wait another two months for it though. Why not put it out at the end of next month?

Official press release will drop this week, as well as the possible tracklist....
-
All I wanna say is hell yeah! This is great to hear. Sam Sneed has a great album and great material sitting in Death Row's Vault. So, to hear that it's gonna see tha light of day is great. I look forward to buyin' it and being able to listen to it.
-
release date?!
-
Hopefully it's all his DR era material and not the half-mid 90's, half new stuff disc they had been talking about. If they want to do that, release it as a double album, one cd full of 94-95 era tracks and the other with new material.
-
release date?!
january 25th 2011
-
