Title: got an android phone this week.
Post by: Matty on December 14, 2010, 10:22:11 PM
haven't had a new phone for years. this thing amazingly cost under Ģ100 and is bomb! (zte blade) does everything, gorgeous high res screen. is anyone else using an android phone? seems a lot more cool than iphone in terms of the device cost and customizability. the amount of shit you can mess around with (different custom roms, alternate versions of every component, free apps) to get a finely tuned experience is crazy.

I just switched over from an Iphone, and I'm loving it. It's all about preference and I prefer the Android as it allows me to customize appearance as well as integrate Google services I use (Gmail, Google Voice, etc.) I think Apple barely started allowing some of those apps after blocking them from the Itunes store since Google rolled them out. I've been able to find superior or equal replacement apps for the apps I used with the Iphone. I do miss the sleek and smooth Ipod music player though. Also I believe Google is much looser on approving apps for the market place. Iphone is very simplistic and easy for anyone to use. I could see some people getting frustrated with an Android device because it's not as cut and paste as the Iphone. I recommend that if you want to have full control over your device, go with Android.

^^ for sure.

http://www.android-underground.org/ for free paid apps.

i'm just real happy at the amount of functionality on the handset i got for the price. literally a fraction of the cost of some high-end models. not such a worry when carrying it around either - the ZTE Blade is by far the best bang for buck phone on the market. did i mention the AMOLED screen! really incredible to have this on a low priced handset and i much prefer the image to any LCD, looks incredible. custom roms can also be flashed onto the phone for better performance, waiting on a stable android 2.2 for this model now.

I'm stuck on Android 1.6 on Sony Ericsson X10. Fucking At&t is holding up the release of 2.1. But I'm fine with it update should be coming soon
Title: Re: got an android phone this week.

mine is on 2.1 and there will be a final 2.2 release for the chinese variants of this handset at least, which will be modded and fully usable 8)

reluctant to try one of the pre-release 2.2 leaks yet. i'm seeing that the 2.3 source code is out there and people have roms booting on certain handsets and building parts of it like the new keyboard into 2.2 roms 8)

i believe 2.2 has the full flash support whereas on earlier versions you have to do some workarounds to get it going. i've barely scratched the surface though, just put on launcher pro and a few other apps onto the stock, bloated orange network 2.1 rom for now.

Gingerbread out soon aswell :)

Gingerbread out soon aswell :)

yup (2.3). the code is out there people have it booting on handsets already. i dunno if its too much different to 2.2. i know 2.2 has quite a few useful additions over 2.1 (native apps2sd support and flash support, faster), but i think it has better support for streaming, gaming and tablet devices now.

a lot of handsets don't even have proper 2.2 updates yet tho, so those ones seem unlikely for official 2.3 builds, at least for some time.

I recently got the HTC EVO 4G I love it

nice, that's like the daddy of android handsets right now, but iphone level price :bandit:

its the Desire HD over here. massive screen, fast processor, high-res video recording. i heard the battery life can suffer cause of all that stuff tho?

voted the best HTC handset at XDA developers. interesting that it's not even an android phone out of the box, but very popular with the modders 8)

^ is that the jawn that comes with windows on it? (for t-mobile)? cuase that phone sucks dick. (as in the phone is amazing, but the fact that it runs window makes it the shittiest piece of shit ever, ask anyone)

i presume thats why he and most people have android builds installed on em instead of the the stock windows. interestingly the keyboard for that phone has been ported to android handsets and is supposed to be one of the best touch keyboards anywhere.

does this shit on iphone?

depends what handset. not really, but in terms of customisability and value, definitely. desire HD (Evo 4G in states) is the big dogg that gives the iphone a run for its money, but from what i hear not the best battery life. samsung galaxy S is nice too.

Just got the Evo 4g, I switched over from the iphone 3gs, which is real fast, but is not as fast as this Evo 4g.

The data speed on this 4g is incredible. Like matty said, its customizable as fuck.

I would prefer this over the iphone 4. Well, thats if we don't count it on Verizon. Now that the iphone is with Verizon, it's a tough call.

Windows phones are terrible. I work for a phone company and I can honestly say Android is taking over. 2.3 is on on the Nexus S now. 2.2 is on most handsets. Honeycomb is going to be out soon I think for tablets only then after that is Ice Cream Sandwitch so Android is going to have an interesting year. Expect Nokia to fight until the death aswell with regard to their handsets. They have just signed up Windows, wrong decision in my opinion they should of went down the Android route, but maybe this partnership can surprise everybody.

Can't wait for the Samsung Galazy S 2 and the LG Optimus 3D though. Both look awesome. Although ive heard already that the touchscreen on the LG isnt very reactive so that could be a big negative on that side. Will be interesting to see the none-glasses 3D though, and see whether it is any good.

the new samsungs (another is the 'infuse 4g' in america) have badass screen technology, quite possibly the best ever on a mobile device...'super amoled plus' 8)

Yeah mate, they look amazing. Even the Galaxy S is still an amazing phone just a shame that Samsung Kies still sucks and it doesnt work on a MAC properly yet. I'm definatly going to be looking at a Galaxy S II, I-Phone 5, and LG Optimus 3D when they arrive. My contract is up in August sometime so I will be able to upgrade then.

Itīs funny. I bought the Iphone because it had shitloads of cool apps and stuff, and to date it probably still outranks with the apps. But when I read the news, it says that Android will probably have most developers on their side in about a year or more.
When that happens there is no use for the Iphone anymore. Only thing about it is the functionality.

It makes sense really..

Apple just releases one phone a year with the iOS software on it.
HTC, Samsung etc. release a couple of phones a year with the Android system, so I think because of the hardware upgrades people will fall for these types of phones sooner.

Whatīs the deal with Windows Phone software? Is it any good?

windows phone 7 is supposed to be awesome UI wise, but it's a bit of a wait and see because of the more limited support. may never pick up enough to challenge IOS or the quickly growing Android. At the end of the day its still Microsoft and Android is based on Linux. But best believe MS will try and exploit windows phone and Windows 7 cross-connectivity, could be some nice stuff.

I'm heavily down with Android but they have a lot of work to take it to the next level of popularity. Anyone on 2.2 or above should check out Chrome2Phone connectivity (Fox2Phone for Firefox) where you can instantly send content from a desktop straight your mobile. really dope!

Well I work with mobile phones and can honestly say in the 6 months my store has been trading I dont think we have sold one single windows phone. Sure the U.I looks cool but it is very slow in terms of touchscreen and android currently the operating platform to beat. I think windows will come up with some new ideas but personally I think the damage is done with Windows phones. Thats why I cannot understand why Nokia didnt choose Android over Windows for their new operating system. Windows phones are dying a death and unless someone somewhere comes up with something that clearly makes it a better operating system to use than Android I think Nokia will continue to lose their grip on the global mobile phone market place.

MS probably throwing a lot of money at people to produce some Windows phones in the hope that some of it will stick. your right tho, they already lost with the old windows mobile incarnations, so primitive and shitty. MS never seem to care until they get competition in anything, which is becoming a bad business model these days. they only actually made windows 7 any good because of the increasing popularity of macs becoming a threat.

Iīm waiting to see what Apple has in store for us in the future, like the Iphone 5.. If they continue to make big improvements they can stay relevant. If not, Android will take over very soon I predict.

You guys still liking your Android phones?
I'm looking into a new phone.  I know I won't go with an iPhone and I'm leaning heavily to Android over Blackberry.
Might go with the HTC Sensation: http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-sensation/

sold my android recently, the ZTE Blade (bought it for 90, sold for 130) 8)

got the latest best budget handset on order at the mo http://www.expansys.com/acer-liquid-metal-205669/

this thing is crazy value for 140...a lot of higher end handsets that haven't been so popular are getting agressive price drops at the moment. this acer is definitely one of them, expansys have some very nice offers. there's increasingly better options at the more budget end of the androids these days, some real well specced handsets that don't cost an arm and a leg like the Galaxy S 2. and some of the more expensive devices are a little large too. depends if you want a crazy large screen. ice cream sandwich will drop in the next couple of months, a huge android release. will be interesting to see how good it is and how fast developers get roll out updates/come out with new phones with it.

I think when you really want a smartphone, best choice is to choose one of these phones:

- iPhone
- Samsung
- HTC

It all comes down to taste, you either like the iPhone/Samsung or not. HTC is a real solid phone, but you gotta pick a newer one.

Nokia is just straight bullshit, the Ovi store is the worst and it probably has the least apps.
Blackberry is getting less and less popular.. with the latest updates on new phones like the iPhone 4S the only thing that kept the BB original (ping) is now gone.
LG always looks nice, but it's real slow and doesn't work as well as the other phones.

I know I'm getting the 4S..

budget is also a consideration. you can't get a good samsung or HTC android handset under 200. and obviously forget about the iphone. not a problem for pay monthly users (although you pay for it indirectly) but for those looking to buy the handset outright or just not have such a high value phone...there are good android options where you get the most bang for buck.

I get the budget thing, but when an operating system like iOS is constantly updating, even for older phones (iOS5 works on 3gs) it definetely gives something back. Couple of my friends have Android phones and really, once you've had an iPhone you have a hard time going back to another OS.

I ended getting the HTC Sensation last week.  I was pretty happy with it at first except for not being able to delete some pre-installed programs and having lackluster battery life.
Then I figured out how to root the phone and I threw on the HD Revolutionary ROM with Beats Audio and it make the phone much better.  Was able to solve those two issues too.
Looking forward to having this phone for the next few years.

iPhone all the way for me. I'll be getting the 4S myself, not because its something I'm dying to get or cos I'm an apple obsessive or anything...just so happens my contract renewal on my phone is up in a few weeks so it works out nicely. Got a iPhone 3GS at the moment so it'll still be a welcome change.

So, what's the best Antivirus app?

not sure myself i don't think it's really necessary if you're careful and it's only going to drain resources. i'm not sure that viruses per se are the biggest concern on a phone.

an app which is good is called 'ad free', rewrites your host file to block the latest known ad/spyware servers, which in itself should protect from a lot of potential crap. phone has to be rooted to use it.
