Seattleites can expect to see a lot more of former Sonics point guard Gary Payton in the next several months.
Payton said Tuesday on Dave Mahler's show on KJR that he and former teammate Shawn Kemp are planning to hold youth camps in Seattle and hope to announce a charity game to be played in July.
"We know the Seattle fans are great," Payton said. "They need some kind of basketball support out there. And we want to give it to them."
It's all part of Payton's efforts to get the NBA back in Seattle. And he said he wouldn't mind being an assistant coach for any future Seattle franchise.
"I really want to be back in Seattle, and be on a bench in Seattle," Payton said.
Payton said he's not sure he would ever want to be a head coach, but he is interested in coaching fellow point guards in the league.
"Basketball has changed a lot since my era," Payton said. "They don't play basketball the way I played."
He said Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz is the closest thing in the league today to The Glove.
Payton said he hopes to announce the charity game in March.
Payton touched on a few other topics during his discussion with Mahler:
He will go into the basketball Hall of Fame as a Sonics. He is eligible for induction next year.
He would not attend an alumni event in Oklahoma City if invited. "I didn't play in Oklahoma City," he said. "That would be disrespect to Seattle fans. We never played there. Why would we go to Oklahoma City and give the fans that opportunity or privilege?"
His oldest son, Gary Jr., is preparing for college and is being recruited by Division 1 schools, but he might spend a year at a prep school in Arizona to get his academics in order.

it would NOT be disrespectful for Seattle fans to attend a Supersonic/Thunder alumni event, stop bein so small minded GP

Gary Payton is one of my favorite players of all time. Dude was a G! But Deron Williams is nothing like him. Their games are nowhere near the same.
-
I personally don't think Payton would help any star NBA point guard.
He could help Raymond Felton or Mario Chalmers.

I imagine Rondo would teach Gary Payton a few things about playing PG :D
but GP can help Rondo on free throws (oh snap)

lol Right. Rondo could learn alot from Payton. Payton came into the league with a poor jumpshot...almost as bad as Rondo lol. But he developed it as his career went on and actually became decent from the perimeter. He is probably the best defensive PG ever, IMO. Rondo could learn a lot. He is BARELY a top 5 PG now, and thats debatable.

Rondo > Williams > Paul > Rose > Westbrook

There is absolutely NO way I would take Rondo over any of those guys. ESPECIALLY Rose, Paul and Williams. I wouldnt even take Rondo over Parker. Parker doesnt get credit because he's French lol. But in our offense, Rondo would struggle cus he cant hit an open jumper.
-
Parker doesn't get the credit he deserves ... 2 times All Star , Finals MVP ,; youngest point guard ever to start a NBA game and only player with Magic and Kobe (not that I compare the 3 but still a great accomplishment) to win 3 titles before 25... he's just a winner and a hard worker (he had absolutely no shot like Rondo when he started , now his midrange game is pretty dec
When the Spurs plays on national TV , all the broadcasters are talking about is how great TD and Gino are .. smh
-
Yeah, Westbrook is still really young & averages 22, 5 & 8. & on top of that, he basically just has Kevin Durant. Rondo has people coming off the bench that are as good as starters in OKC lol.
& Chris Paul is lonely, if he was on the Celtics, he would probably be the MVP at this point or second to LeBron.
Rose & Williams are the two best PGs in the league right now.

Yeah I always hate how little respect he gets. Part of it is that he isnt your prototypical PG. He is a score first PG. But there are very few players who get into the paint like him. Its disruptive to a defense.

chris paul can't hold Rondo's jockstrap Chamilly
Deron Williams is the only man in the NBA who could be considered better than Rondo

You are definitely in the minority with your over-exaggerated praise of Rondo. He is good, but you think he is clearly the best PG in the league. LOL He isnt a starting All Star in the East, and he would struggle to even make the squad in the West. He just happens to be in the perfect situation for a PG who cant shoot for shit. Which he would naturally rack up the assists then.

Basically what I see is Rondo penetrating & dishing it out to Ray Allen (The best pure shooter of all-time) or Paul Pierce (a future HOFer) or when the opposing bigs step up to guard him driving, he just flips it behind his back to KG (another HOFer) or Shaq (another HOFer).

He's the equivilent of Trent Dilfer, but in the NBA. He's just a game manager. He doesnt have to win the game. Just dont fuck things up ;D

The Sonics were here, supported fully, then stolen after years and years of loyalty, it would be a complete slap in the face for GP to assosciate with them.
-
Payton & the other sonic greats shouldn't want anything to do with OKC. Stupid that the NBA is thinking of giving the sonics history to OKC. Besides let OKC have some of their own history.
-
^ That's what I'm saying, they already robbed us of an amazing team that's gonna be a contender for years to come..the least they can do is let us keep the history that happened HERE.
