Title: I thought I'd never buy another Snoop Dogg album
Post by: Big BpG on March 24, 2011, 12:47:59 AM
I like to think that as a Snoop Dogg fan, I was one of the biggest. Not only did I buy all his albums, but I bought other albums that he was featured on. I was on this board all day every day (The posts don't lie), but mainly in the first few years. I even dedicated a website to him, but those days of fanaticism are over. What it came down to was the music. His music went in a much different direction. That neptune laced PTCTBTB album was garbage to me. R&G got some decent spins, but after that I didn't even blink. Blue Carpet was Meh, even Dre bored me.  Ego Trippin had Press Play and that was it. Malice, well that shit couldn't even be a mixtape (Gangsta Luv Included).

So yes, I've heard them all, but I haven't shelled a penny since R&G. I didn't even D/L his last three albums. Even more so, Snoop did a show here back in Feb, 3 blocks from my house and I didn't even give a shit.

but...

Doggumentary ... This album is great! Will I open my wallet for it? Pleezbaleevit!

I'm just saying I'm real happy to have some Snoop Dogg music back in my eardrums. I'm 28 now. I was 10 years old when I saw Snoop morph into a Doberman Pinscher, so I've seen my share of ups and downs in his career. This album sits right under Last Meal.

Yep.

Malice = great diverse contemporary pop album. Better than BEP's The End, Gaga, La Roux - all that shit that got major propped in 2010.

More Malice = Snoop on his independent gangsta tip, with some smooth thug shit too 'You're Gonna Luv Me' is still my Jam. :pimp:

I haven't heard doggumentary yet but putting it over top dogg? I doubt that's possible

R&G over blue carpet?! Seriously? Blue carpet wasn't the best album but it was solid, r&g only had one song 2 songs I'd listen to (drop it like its hot, let's get blown)

And you have paid the cost way too low. That was a nice album just took some getting used to cuz the sound was so different

Sure it's down to taste but apart from the Doggy Style Records camp on there (Meech, Pooh, Soopafly, Charlie Wilson), you also got 2 incredible joints by Carlos Stephens  - Gin & Juice II and Game Of Life. Plus smooooothhh production by DJ Darryl on 'Don't Let Go' who's done classics including D-Shots 'Money, Sex & Thugs' (one of my all time favourite joints!!). And Snoop nails the no limit sound tracks better than No Limits home grown artists. Like Master P said he brought money power respect, street knowledge and wisdom. To me the CD just has a classic sound. :pimp:

"Bang Out", "Oh No" and "Ups And Downs" are the only songs i still bump from "Rhythm & Gangsta", i consider it one of Snoop's weakest albums for sure. It ain't nowhere close to being as good as "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment".

dead man walking if included is probably my third fave snoop joint.
his nolimit debut  was a dope album...it had some strong cuts they just didnt know  how to coach snoop in the booth. they didn know how to mix his vocals right over those 808 filled beats.

pay for pussy is one of the dopest interludes ever.

What up, BPG?  Long time, no see.

R&G is perhaps Snoop's most divisive album.  You either love it or hate it.  Me, I love it because it's really cohesive and you can tell there was a discernible artistic vision there for how the album was going to sound.  I think after listening to it for 70 mins or however long it is, you really get a sense of an artistic statement being made, at least as far as a particular "sound" goes.  You can hear what Snoop was trying to accomplish with that one.  Now, you might not appreciate that "sound" or that artisitic statement -- that's alright.  That's what opinions are for.  It might not be your cup of tea at all, so I understand why people hate R&G.  But also, it's for that same principle that I love it; there is a statement being made for the listener to react to.  Nowadays, a lot of albums are thrown together.  There's no clear cut vision for the album.  The listener is left stranded listening to it.  Ego Trippin, Malice, Doggumentary -- these albums have no distinct vision, as far as I can tell.  Each of these albums has dope cuts, but there's no cohesion giving rise to an artistic statement.  It's like watching a movie and saying to yourself, "it had two or three good scenes, but it's not a great movie overall."  Nobody judges a movie based on how many good scenes there are.  Rather, we judge movies based on the overall two-hour experience.  That's how albums should be evaluated as well.  And contemporary albums really just seem to me not to have any artisitic vision behind them.

Here's my ranking:

1. Doggystyle
2. Doggfather
3a. Blue Carpet
3b. R&G (pretty much tied for third place)

...big drop off now...

5. No Limit Top Dogg
6. Tha Last Meal
7. Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$

...another drop off...

8. Doggumentary
9. Ego Trippin
10. Malice

NOTE: I've never even bothered to listen to Da Game a single time through, even after all these years, so I'm not ranking it.

Nice to see you back Big Homie.. certainly respect your opinion especially when it comes to Snoop.  I agree, once he started fuckin with the Neptunes his music went way South and I haven't bought any of his records since then after being a huge fan.

But if you say his new album is even better than the Top Dogg album, then I'm definitely going to check it out.  Good lookin out homie!

4. Snoop Dogg feat. B-Real - Vato (4:44)
5. Snoop Dogg feat. R. Kelly - That's That (4:17)
6. Snoop Dogg feat. E-40, MC Eiht, Goldie Loc, and Tha Dogg Pound - Candy (Drippin' Like Water) (4:48)
7. Snoop Dogg feat. The Game - Gangbangin' 101 (4:02)
8. Snoop Dogg feat. Nate Dogg - Boss Life (3:31)
9. Snoop Dogg - Round Here (3:42)
10. Snoop Dogg feat. Western Union, LaToiya Williams, and Raul Midon - Like This (3:56)
11. Snoop Dogg feat. Young Jeezy and Nate Dogg - Wanna B'z (4:49)
12. Snoop Dogg feat. Akon - I Wanna Fuck You (2:58)
13. Snoop Dogg feat. Stevie Wonder - Conversations (3:38)
14. Snoop Dogg feat. Mr. Porter - Long Gone (4:42)
15. Snoop Dogg feat. Dr. Dre and D'Angelo - Imagine (4:42)

I've enjoyed reading the replies. You all make good points. Top Dogg was a solid album. I really enjoyed it a lot, but it's those weaker No Limit tracks that I simply cannot listen to.

and, I may be overreaching a bit, but this is honestly the most excited I've been listening to a Snoop Dogg record since Tha Last Meal.

album is good.. would have been better without ,
Superman, Its The Only Thing, EL Lay, Platinum,Raised In The Hood, My Fuckin House & Sumthin like this night.

those arent bad but they kinda fuck the vibe a bit, Choose and Keep Going , would have been perfect. oh and I do not know who is putting all they songs together for this album but he did a bad job..after listening to We Rest In Cali I always feel like the next song is weak

What's so special about Eat a Dick?  One recycled verse, repetitive unfinished beat and a wack hook. Not good.
Keep It Real Dogg - nice, but we've already heard this beat before
Head Doctor OG - This song isn't on mine

The other songs you mentioned were dope. But you neglected to mention the rest of the songs, most of which are filler. So no. Great look back on Snoop's earlier days if you look at it as a compilation, but not a great album. This doesn't compare to Snoop's better albums.

I honestly like every Snoop album for the most part- didn't even hate Malice like others, although it's his second weakest (I like More Malice better, mainly because of Protocol.  Da Game is my least favorite, although I do really like a few songs on that one- Don't Let Go comes to mind, and the one with Charlie Wilson.  I agree with what was said about R&G above- I love that one, but I can understand the hate as well.  As far as this one, I like it so far but not sure where to place it.

And its pretty obvious why it wasn't used. They realized it was weak and fixed the beat to make Serial Killa.

Hacks opinion isn't relevant. He loves demos and poor quality recordings. He loves an emcee and as soon as they obtain commercial success he says they fell off. If crooked I went platinum he would start saying he fell off and that some random freestyle recorded on a cassette deck was better then the new stuff. Hack is predictable in all aspects

Good comments.

Something I've learnt from this thread, R&G and Da Game are both 'loved or hated' albums, seems like everyones take on them was different.

All his other albums seem to get roughly the same amount of love. Good to see more people propping Tha Godfather overall. A while back people were still trashing it...mainly because of the DJ Pooh tracks. Now everyone loves DJ Pooh...goes to show stuff goes in and out of fashion with people and times change.

ppl were just so pissed doggfather wasnt doggystyle 2...as time goes on and he put out shitty albums like malice doggfather started to look more and more appealing.

doggfather was cool but without dre to coach his vocals snoop always sounded kind of weak on the beats imo

same with his no limit debut it seemed like they didnt know how to get the best vocals at the time...like his delivery was real timid.

First of all, I know Snoop hasn't  dropped anything super hard the last couple of albums.  I think that every album he has dropped is solid, at least better than all the garbage that drops. It's a matter of taste when it comes to Snoop, i've heard people say that Top Dogg is whack. :-X Then u got people putting R&G very high in the rankings... Doggystyle is a no brainer to everybody and Doggfather is no joke at all.(His most gangsta album) Doggumentary is a very solid album because it has diverse production, even tho I don't like Wet, Gangbang Rookie, and the track with Willie Nelson. The Way Life Used To Be is my shit and Peer Pressure is crazy banging. I have every Snoop album he's ever dropped and i will continue to buy his music because Snoop is the KING of the West Coast. If you download Snoop's shit then u ain't a true fan, u lames must like low quality audio and trashy mastering. Snoop is and will always be the backbone of the left coast. Fuck downloading albums!!!!! Doggumentary gets a 8/10 but like I said it's a matter of taste.

Ay this album is not bad. I actually liked more than 2 songs that weren't singles.
If it wasn't for those Bootsy tracks I'd probably treat it like Ego Trippin.

People used to hate on The Hard Way too when it came out because it (1) didn't have any production from Warren G and (2) it should've come out 10 years earlier. Now you don't often see people hate on the album anymore.
