I need a big list of hip-hop songs that sample rock of any kind, writing a paper for my History of Rock class due Tuesday
also, if anybody knows about any good lawsuits involving rappers/producers sampling rock post those up too
-
The Turtles sued De La Soul for sampling one of their records on 3 Feet High & Rising ("You Showed Me" on "Transmitting Live from Mars). it was settled out of court.
Biz Markie was involved in quite a high profile lawsuit over sampling.
There is probably quite a lot of information available regarding these two cases. good luck, and if you find anymore let us know.

Tone Loc - Wild Thing samples "Jamie's Cryin" by Van Halen
"Van Halen's management at the time asked for a flat fee (credited in some reports to be USD$5,000) as payment to have the song sampled by Tone Lōc. Apparently, this decision was taken without consulting the band's original members (credited as co-authors of the song), who in turn did not expect Wild Thing to become the major hit it became. A subsequent civil lawsuit was settled out of court, with the band receiving USD$180,000 as settlement payment. Alex Van Halen has gone on record saying that he had heard the song over the radio halfway and not realizing it had been sampled until he recognized his (by now famous) tom-tom break at least a few times. Concerning the settlement, he said: "Well, at least we got something. Tone Lōc and his people made millions out of it..."

There was also the Schooly D - Jimmy Page issue over Schooly sampling Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" without permission on his song, "Signifying Rapper". The band found out when they watched Abel Ferrerea's "Bad Lieutenant" and were surprised to hear the sample used during a controversial scene where two thugs rape a nun. They objected greatly and sued both Schooly and the filmmakers. Since then, the song had to be replaced on all versions of the film.
