What was the deal with Eazy's claim here? Was it true, and if so, how much was he getting off of Dre during this time, how long did the contract last, and did it also concern albums such as MWTC and Dogg Food that didn't explicitly have Dr. Dre's name on them?
Someone drop knowledge.

eazy e died of aids in the early 90s, when aids was still mostly active in the western gay community.
-
ruthless was getting
40% from the sales of the chronic, if i'm not mistaken.
and they were also getting a certain % from everything produced by dre.
ruthless wasn't going to free him for nothing.
they knew dre wouldn't come back though.
-
40%? Wtf. Where did you hear that? That's insane if true. Especially considering suge was taking the other 60% lol

i could be wrong, but dre was signed to ruthless, he had to produce albums for them.
i think i got the % from jerry or eazy, not sure

1% from sales

eazy said it himself on the arsenio show...25 cents per album....
he said dre sold 4 million...and he made 1 million off that in his pocket...
or something like that..

lol no wonder Dre dissed him. I can't see how people can defend Eazy if he wouldn't let his supposed friend out of his contract. He knew Dre was a goldmine and he milked him for all he could.

what about dre having secret meetings with suge knight or dre setting up eazy (yeah i know, dre said he didn't know was suge was gonna do, but he also admitted that suge can be intimidating to get things done), you call that a real friend?
dre could have worked something out with ruthless, but no he ran away and talked shit

I would assume he had already tried to get out of his contract, wouldn't you? They wouldn't have had to force him to sign papers if he was willing to do it. They were supposed to be boys. Dre had made him a shitton of money, didn't feel he was getting paid enough and wanted out of his contract. For someone to say "no you can't leave, we have a contract and I'm gonna keep making money off of you"...that's not something a friend does.
-
Eazy-E got greedy and that was probably because of Jerry Heller.

It's a business. There's a reason why they say friends and money don't mix. There's also a reason why all these labels claiming to be like a family and built on loyalty end up having these big fallings out with artists over money.

True. I get in squabs with my roommates over rent and who pays what, so I can only imagine its much worse when the money in question is one's income and livelyhood.

What exactly did he do? A former friend screwed him out of money and wouldn't let him out of his contract. This same friend claims to be the hardest thug out on records. So he let Suge intimidate him into signing a release. Lol that's the least of the things you should be judging Dre for he, he actually had a reason to get at Eazy.

If it wasn't for Eazy, Dre would be scratching records for the Village People Reunion tour. Dre could have fulfilled his contractual obligation and left.

If it wasn't for Dre, Eazy would have died a street hustler. Why let someone pimp you for several more years when you can say fuck you and bounce?

Was just about to say something similar. I think both the brothers could have avoided the whole ugly mess but once money and ego come to play, shit barreled out of control. They both paid a price though. Eric ended up losing his most valuable assets in Dre, Cube, D.O.C., and the rest because he undervalued their worth to his label. As a result, Dre ended up starting an even bigger label with someone else. Dre ended up getting fucked by the very monster he helped create in Suge and never really got to have that piece of mind in resolving his problems with Eazy.

nigga he got hella skrilla from death row and ruthless probably still gets royalties from that shit. so if you call that being soft(which is really what your implying) then so be it.

he set him up: told eazy to meet up, but didn't show up. goons came instead.
also, i fail to see how dre got screwed when he was working for ruthless: he was living in a big house. the only way he deserved more(imo) if he was a co owner of the company.
maybe eazy should have done more to keep dre satisfied, but it was too late when suge came into the picture (1989/1990).
im just saying both were wrong

Dre wasn't working for minimum wage, he was getting paid. Hell, he was making in a week than a doctor makes in a year! But honestly, he was an employee and he got paid like an employee. Once his contract was up he could have walked off and made his record label then.

He's an employee now too but I assume he makes more than he did at Ruthless. And oh yeah, why not get pimped for the next few years til his contracts up. ::)

Played i think not.

yea dre was getting fucked but dre came out 2 be in a better situation then everybody that was fucking him.

eazy-s sweater game was never near dre's level though

Good heavens this is interesting but whatever happened to that rapper that was on deathrow for a short while, wouldnt it be cool if we had a time machine?

That's why as much as people want to dog the relationship with Jimmy, dude was smart. He didn't try to play the friend or homeboy card too much. He gave him enough money and creative control to keep him happy. With Suge and Eazy, in addition to the money disputes, it seemed like they were looking to bring in their influences as executive producers to the table toward the end of their respective business relationships. With Jimmy, I figure as long as he has a single he can market and an album he can sell, it's probably all good.

Well obviously he can't be too bad if he's let Dre delay Detox for this long. You just know Jimmy's been wanting to cash in on that for just as long as we've been waiting for it.

You're the dense one since you're suggesting he should have stayed as Eazy's lackey instead of trying to get out of it.

What do you mean "he made enough money to make the whining look silly"? Do you know how much Dre was making for the work he did? Your argument is silly since you're the one saying he can't have been getting screwed because he had a house. That's stupidity at its finest. Him having a big house says nothing about whether he was being screwed or not.
-
Bottom line, Eazy has been dead for how long?? Suge is a washed-up, used to be gangsta music executive walkin, sometimes driving around LA while Dre is living beyond large...Dude used Suge to get away from Ruthless, even though he had to still pay some royalties and used Jimmy to get away from DeathRow even though he left millions on the table...I would say that he has more than made up whatever royalties he paid Ruthless and the millions he left at Deathrow so tell me who the smart man is?? As Dre once said, peace of mind means more anyway. Alot of people forget how disrespected Eazy had become before Bone Thugs slightly ressurected his image. Dying young always seems to lift certain artists to a new level. Life is about choices and Eazy chose jerry heller and Suge chose "the streets" while Dre has always chosen to be his own man no matter how much money was left on the table.

i used the house as an example, maybe i should have made that clear. im sure he owned more than that.
well i'll quote jerry heller:
ruthless took twenty five cents out of each dollar of publishing royalties
the other publishing companies involved also took twenty five cents
Of the fifty cents left, the lyric writer took twenty five cents, and the beat writer took twenty-five cents.
Dre composed the beats for every song NWA ever put out, so he always got that quarter out of every dollar coming in, less deductions for all his sampling
+
no one knows how much his name was worth at the time. you could even wonder if he's getting paid for what his name is worth now

according to jerry's book, eazy received 15% of the sales from the chronic + 10% of the money gained by dre's productions

That's why I can't knock Aftermath too much as a label. As much as everyone clowns them for dropping artists, the ones who make it to "superstar" level tend to all be paid well. For all of the superstars that Death Row or Ruthless had, how many of them were millionaires when all was said and done? Granted, I'm sure the lessons learned from those labels might have played a part too.

well i don't see why the contracts would be very different from ruthless.
besides, hardly anybody (from ruthless) can compare with the sales of eminem & 50 cent. bone thugs comes close. they should be fine, unless tomica & the gang fucked them over
