Title: Any West Coast Hooksters?
Post by: love33 on May 12, 2011, 11:13:50 AM
Now that the Greatest Hookster of all time in the game has passed on (R.I.P. Nate Dogg), are there any good assist guys for rap choruses on the West coast?  I know Ray J's out there, and he always does his thing, but who else besides him?  Michael Marshall ("5 on it") is pretty good but he doesn't do a whole lot these days.  TQ and Jon B. used to be huge back in the day.  Charlie Wilson is a hit or miss type guy, but not on the level of a Ray J.  Even though he's a rapper, I actually think Knoc'Turnal sounds real dope on hooks (he should take that to the banks and start doing more of it).  Who else is there really out there in the West and is there anyone coming up or are West artists going to have to keep going to Trey Songz, T-Pain, and Akon?

Yeah i would go for Kokane to.

But Butch Cassidy and Bookie Loc is great to.
Bo Roc also.

But even how great those are, they cant tutch Nate Dogg.
The more i think about it, and the more i listen to other singers from the west, the more obvious it is that Nate was lightyears ahead of everyone else in the game.

Again, i love the artist mentioned above, but still....

We talkin bout hooks here.

His hooks > his mixtape.

If you dont know then google and find some of the hooks he did. Shit is amazing.

Def Kokane & Butch Cassidy.

Those would be my top two picks and in that order.

Charlie Wilson is a hit or miss type guy, but not on the level of a Ray J.

Ouch! Uncle Charlie got fucked up! Ha! Ha!

seriously ? LMAO

Charlie Wilson is a legend, even Ray J would never dare say that he's even half as skilled as him (and i'm not even one of the ray j haters out there, i like his hooks, to an extent). He easily surpasses any hookster in the rap game. Dude has influenced entire generations of singers, go ask Aaron Hall, R. Kelly, Keith Sweat or Justin Timberlake who they respect the most.

I see what you're sayin, but from a Rap hook perspective from hip-hop (not just purely an r&b artist), I consider him up or down and I don't think I could listen to an album where he was featured all over it as the main hook singer for 4-6 tracks.  I like his tracks like "Ghetto Fabolous" w/ Mystikal, "Groupie" w/ Daz & Kurupt, and "Signs" w/ Snoop, but I couldn't listen to him being featured for a long period of time.  He has a unique sound no doubt, but he doesn't have much versatility (his delivery and sound is exactly the same on all his hooks that I've heard).  He might be a great R&B legend, but from a rap fan's perspective for a quick hook, he doesn't seem to fit the role for me.

As far as Ray J, the stuff he did with Death Row was tight (a lot of those tracks are unreleased), him and Eastwood and Tri-Star actually formed a group.  Go listen to "I'm a Gangsta" with Yukmouth and Crooked I and "Crush" was a different look he came tight on that.  I just think he has more versatility and commercial appeal than any other R&B cat on the West right now and not saying he's great, but he's good, and right now, I can't think of anyone else to fill the role.  Like I said in my OP, I think Knoc'Turnal does dope hooks and could do more of them, rappers don't do enough of their own hooks or hooks on other rapper's tracks these days (Pac did a lot of his own hooks).

basically, we shouldn't even be looking for a replacement. No one can replace Nate and the legacy he left far as his hooks...and let's not forget he wasn't just a hookster cause he did have his own albums. But, he was known for hooks and as the hook king.

we don't want anyone trying to sound like him, like who ever that is on that Kush track. So, instead of who will be the next...just ereone do what they do and if you can do nice hooks then do em staying true to your own sound.

but a big fat NO to Ray J being the hook guy to run to. I'd rather Kokane, he is pretty dope, latoya williams too

Who else is there really out there in the West and is there anyone coming up or are West artists going to have to keep going to Trey Songz, T-Pain, and Akon?

Artist are going to these people for hooks because that's what's "hot" and "popular" right now but not because we don't have artist on the west coast to do hooks. If artist are choosing to use the same people that everyone else uses for hooks then that's on them. But the same can be said for the producers that west coast artists are choosing to use.

I'd rather Kokane, he is pretty dope, latoya williams too

Kokane has been holding it down for a long ass time when it comes to hooks and he can spit too and as far as a female that can knock a hook out the park goes, Latoya is dope (she's got a great old school, soulful type voice). Then we also got Butch. No one is ever going to replace Nate Dogg, ever, but we got some great artist here in the west coast who already got classics under their belts who have worked with the biggest names and have been a part of some big albums so I don't think it should be too hard to find someone to do hooks especially when we also have the new, younger artist that are coming up doing hooks.

So it isn't for a lack of talent that we don't have west coast artist featured on hooks, as long as artists (labels) are wanting to use the T-Pain's and Akon's to be commercially successful then that's just what it is. Nate was the biggest hookster from the west coast (or in rap period) that was commercially big and popular enough to still get featured even in today's commercial mainstream rap music (if you can still call it rap) and unfortunately he's gone now so artist have to go elsewhere for their big hit.

kinda like bouli in the 1st thread i like lv..if it was not for him scc would not been as succeful as they were back in the dayz specially this all day everyday classic, his hooks out of this one are unmatched to this day!
far behind i would put mr.x,even if not too many appearances, roc, butch,Blaqthoven, jerry roll...
ps oh dont foget Ver-C-Tile as well who appears on damu ridas and did a song wit b-brazy...real ghetto r&bist (think he is a blood singer)

I wonder why TQ and Jon B don't do more? But as far as new hooksters from the West, I don't see anyone really doing huge things right now.  Ray J has the name because of his relation to Brandy and all his reality tv shows and the work he's done with Death Row and solo but he may have the name but isn't getting the calls like Dream, Trey Songz, Akon, T-Pain.  The West needs a new go-to guy we gotta keep Nate in our minds and hearts as always but we can't let that stop us from moving on and having someone else step up.  Nobody will ever be as good as Nate anywhere, but the West needs to have someone step it up and represent not just for the West, but in the mainstream as a go-to guy.

no one is saying the west wont continue to move on and let other hooksters shine. however, your mentioning TQ and he doesnt have anything special...nothing special or diff or unique bout his voice or sound. Jon B is cool. but not as the go to guy and Ray j, again, there is NOTHING SPECIAL or unique about his voice other than the fact that he sounds like a cat having sex.

really, there is not new GO TO GUY that the west needs. imo. let Nate rest in peace. and let things take its course. this thread kinda reminds me of the fam member that was waiting for the rich uncle to die so he can take over the business. granted, this fam member is sad the uncle has passed, but....let the man rest in peace.it hasn't even been two months since his death.

and it does NOT have to be a GUY. and it def. has to be someone soulful and unique. IE: L. Williams, Kokane, Butch...

It's about moving on and living in the now....we don't want to be sitting here 10 years from now saying nobody came along....that exact same thing happened when Pac died everyone sat around and nobody tookover and 10 years later people were still saying since pac died the west hasn't had anyone step up.......im saying always pay homage to the great ones, but lets not live in the past like what happened when it took until Game came out in 2003 with Documentary for the West to have a NEW platinum artist break thru....the same should be learned about the go-to hook guy.....nate was the man, but we can't live in the past for the next 10 years we gotta move on and always pay homage but someone has to step it up and fill the role otherwise it will just be someone else from the south, east, whoever who the west rappers will all be calling for hooks like what is going on now....snoop and t-pain, game and trey songz, game and ne-yo, etc you get the point

i understand what you r saying. it is up to the west coast artist that have commercial success to help these hooksters shine. the west coast srtist have to be more vocal bout who they want to work with to these labels. and even if we dont get another main hookster then at least the west needs to still let them shine by just being on an album if it is a person they fell will compliment the song. i still say let nate rest in peace and it dont have to be bout who is the next cuz there will never be another.

in the end its up to the fans. buy the music u want to hear and the songs that dont get the commercial shine that should would then get air play. dnt complain about a commercially successful song that a west coast artist makes that u dont like. if that is the type of song that gains that type of success, that pushes the album, buy it, and know its a business. then, once u, the fan, make it a success...then more songs can be billboad singles so on and so on. i said of of that to say this...west coast artist do put up and coming west artist on their albums. and that includes. hooksters. and thats even before nate passed. maybe then, more of these hooksters can get some shine.. so...buy the album. buy. key word. and yes. that was one big ran on sentence. lol.
