Title: "Yonkers" reminds me of how Eminem came out with "My Name Is" in 99...
Post by: TraceOneInfinite on May 15, 2011, 01:07:15 AM
Tyler the Creator is the most exciting new artist that rap music has seen in a long time.  It kind of reminds me of how Em came out in 1999 with "My Name Is".

See, a lot of artist will throw women and money in their video's to help sell their video's as social proof to suggest popularity.   Yet, Tyler like Eminem relied on himself in the video, and his own acting and entertaining skills.   Remember the "My Name Is" video had Eminem acting out a lot of different roles, like he acted like a president, acted like a man in mental institution, he was acting like a one man show comedian, and so on.   Then in Tylers video for "Yonkers" you basically have a one man show.  He's just relying on his own skills as an entertainer and artist and coming up with something fresh.

Also the buzz the track is creating reminds me of "My Name Is".  I mean, Em was an artist who had been burning up the underground and "My Name Is" finally got him on MTV and then shot his album to the top of the charts.  It looks to be the same scenario with Tyler the Creator.   There are other parallels like their use of shock value and so on.  It makes you realize how much Eminem has changed since then when you see Tyler the Creator coming out young and hungry and not afraid to say anything on a track.

Appearantly everything makes you remenisce about the magical year of 1996 or the source issue with dre on the cover or Eminem back when he didnt suck.

96 is who I am.  That's me, 1996.  100%.   ...but this thread isn't about me or 1996, so why don't you find a relevant thread or post and we can talk there if you want to discuss the subject.

This thread is about Tyler the Creator's new album.    It's not the greatest album, but it's worth mention because it's a new, young artist with a lot of talent and creativity which is something we don't see much of these days in the rap industry.

In fact, Eminem is one Tyler's favorite artists of all times and in some ways, one of his biggest inspirations. Yes, it's a good album, very innovative, with many flafs of course but i was listening to Bastard last night and that was a hell of an album! i read somewhere that Tyler is gonna release physical copies of Bastard. Cool move indeed.

I don't think the two songs are in the same universe & I really liked Tyler's album.

"My Name Is" started a new legacy for one of the greats. "Yonkers" is just a dope song by an artist who can get old if most of his albums are about nothing. If he had 10 songs like "Golden" & 5 songs like "Yonkers", then maybe we could talk.

Tyler cannot seem to spark my interest enough to download an entire album.. I´ve heard some shit here and there, but after a couple of the murder kill shit I get bored.. maybe I haven´t listened to the right tracks though..

Can anyone post some of his (and maybe some other OFWGKTA members) best tracks?

I saw an interview where he was all down with Waka Flocka so he is -1 for me for now. Waka can't rap for shit.

Is it just me or is the video for "Yonkers" extremely corny. Not that it takes away anything from the song.

The difference is Eminem is a very technically skilled MC, and came from a battling background, while Tyler essentially just talks rather than raps

I'd say Odd Future are more like Limp Bizkit - they blew up for a second because teenagers going through the same shit relate to the angst and funny/sick jokes, but there isn't really enough real skill to carry them beyond that, IMO

So many people are saying how creative these guys are, but it's just horrorcore that so many dudes have done before

There was actual controversy with Eminem.  There's nothing controversial with Tyler.  One of the best things Tyler has going for him is his live shows are basically turning into hardcore punk shows.

Have you seen him live? Odd future are coming here in a few weeks and I was wondering if it was worth going?

Your a simple-minded illiterate incapable of understanding personification.  So if out of ignorance, you must call it sad, the call it sad, pathetic, whatever the fuck you want... but I swear by the statement that "I Am 1996" and that's some shit I believe in wholeheartedly and will take to the grave with me!

Just wondering, why 96 though?
I know cats who are all about 93-94 because loads of the top classics came out those years, but 96 wasn't that great in comparison.
Though it was the last pretty dope year before everything kind of went to shit.

^^^ Exactly.  See you just said it.  93-94 were dope, and things kept building and building and then I see the Summer of 96 as the peek or climax.  Then 2pac is murdered and like you said "everything kind of went to shit".

That's what was happening in hip-hop and my own personal life was running parallel to all of that.   So you have in 96 the ying and the yang, the good and the bad, the rise and the fall.  So anything that has happened to me good or bad since then kind of relates back to 1996 for me.   In fact I experienced things in that year that were so over the top and deep that I am still only coming to fully realization years later.

maybe the reason you're a deadbeat is that you think your life should revolve around one year. Its not 96 homie. Time to grow up, go out into the world and realize its an entire different era. You can't live in the past. Think about the good and bad times you had every once in a while but don't make that your life.

Nothing wrong with reminiscing about your favorite years past but to define yourself by a year is sad on so many levels.  No wonder your maturity is severely stunted.

Like I said, call it whatever the fuck you want.  Call it immature, call it "living in the past", you can call it any damn thing...    But I am speaking on nobody's life but my own, so how can anyone tell me about my own life?   I am who I am because of that year, 1996.
