Honestly, this is the kid that was supposed to release the next illmatic. It's not happening. This is corny. Nothing fancy here.
-
i do not see the hype over this dude
-
Dude has gotten wacker & wacker since he dropped "The Warm Up" lol.
-
Hate to agree with you guys on this, but he really is hit or miss. Most of his tracks are average or wack (like this one) , but he has made some incredible songs as well. I still say that Kendrick>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>J. Cole. Big time.
-
When he comes correct it's really dope, natural energy. Listen to Lights Please, Blow Up, Show Me Something, Higher, Problems, & Who's World Is This? All dope. Then the rest of his shit people be gassing up like it's the second coming of Nas.
If any MC(s) was the 2nd coming of Nas it was Lupe Fiasco and then Jay Electornica, both of whom are exponentially better than J. Cole.
Cole's turning into a dope producer so maybe he's focused on that side more and his MCing skills been dropping off. His debut will be interesting if it sees the light of day. You know Jay won't release it without a guaranteed number 1 single.
-
While I agree that he has some dud tracks, I think it's a far-cry to say that Jay Electronica is superior to Cole. How many Jay Electronica songs have people actually heard? Like 10?
I think J.Cole can blow all of them out of the water given the right platform. Friday Night Lights was better than most 2010 albums, and it was a free download (all original beats except for one might I add).
"Blow Up" should have been his entrance into the mainstream, and for whatever reason Jay-Z dropped the ball on that track. "Who Dat" was the wrong song to push him with, I never understood the logic behind pushing that song as a single. I've been following him since the beginning, and I truly believe he has everything it takes to be a top notch artist in this game. He's still young, there's plenty of time for him.
Nas, Joe Budden, Lupe, and many other respected lyricists has co-signed this dude as being one of their favorite current rappers - I wouldn't put anything past this dude. He's got a crisp flow, is clearly an intelligent dude, makes his own beats (which several of them bang by the way), does not rap about materialistic things, and makes songs that can knock on the radio without being about a bullshit dance. He's like a throwback and a breath of fresh air at the same time.
Sky is the limit for this cat in my opinion, and anyone who says he's fallen off since the Warm Up must really not have listened to Friday Night Lights, or must have judged him by some of the duds he has dropped (I will be the first to admit he's had some average/below average songs, but really what artist doesn't have some of those?)
-
I kinda find it funny how people say J. Cole fell off, yet never acknowledge how he's also grown as well. Listen to The Come Up and then Friday Night Lights, you can hear how he's changed and matured throughout the years....
The way I see it dude's just looking for his own style as an entertainer, yet seems to be going towards Kanye, Wayne and Drake's style lyrically. Partly because he's been on tour with Drake for about a year now and because he's starting to focus on producing his own shit that he doesn't put much thought into what he spits over those beats....

not really feelin' this one, sounds like an album throwaway
"Work Out", "Lost Ones", and "Return Of Simba" are all still in rotation

I lost interest in him. Warm up was cool, then after that I just stopped caring.
