Run DMC obviously... they're pioneers, first rap album to go gold and platinum. first rap act to be played on MTV (technically MTV Europe had already started playing rap videos way before MTV "put Run DMC on the telly" but that doesn't really count). they are important as they helped legitimize and popularize rap music.
then N.W.A., historically speaking, NWA's Straight outta Compton is a major turning point in Rap history
Wu-Tang is a strong contender too, they placed the East back on the map commercially, they were groundbreaking in their ability to turn label politics to their advantages, but overall I think Run DMC's and NWA's impact is more significant.
the other groups didn't fundamentally change anything, so i don't see them "important" to our chosen genre, even though ATC & Outkast are brilliant groups.
LOL @ DPG making the list. i guess you had to put a local group to please the dubcc crowd. although we could argue that DPG were important as the group that made Time Warner back out from rap.
I would have added The Beastie Boyz. First rap album to hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

This. And also De la Soul deserves to be on there before ATCQ, as far as establishing the alternative hip hop scene.

Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five are definitely one of the most important because Melle Mel was a huge influence on Rakim,
Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, and those guys developed most of the advanced techniques of MCing...
Melle Mel laid the foundation of what being a competent MC was all about.
And Grandmaster Flash did so much for DJing as well, so that group is pretty much like the catalyst for a lot of what came after.
Also, if we're counting Juice Crew as a group, then they'd be up there as well, because Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap
were so influential on everyone who came after in terms of technical skill and also in what they were rapping about,
and Marley Marl is one of the most influential producers as well.
I'd put it as -
1. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5
2. Juice Crew
3. Run DMC
4. NWA
5. Public Enemy
6. Native Tongues (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, etc.)
7. Beastie Boys
8. Wu Tang Clan

But if there wasn't no Run-DMC, then perhaps there wouldn't of been H.B.O. - an East Coast group that rejected 'Boyz N Tha Hood' which set off Eazy-E and NWA.
Great discussion, but infinite debate just like who was a better rapper, Notorious B.I.G. or Tupac?

To me personally, the difference is a thin line between the two.
Hip-hop makes me think of everything before the early 1990's (and alot of the underground stuff post that era). It differs in the way that it's expressed and the way it's used as a term whether talking about a lifestyle or way of describing something.
Rap covers a range of styles of music but beginning with east coast rap, gangster rap, southern music and whatnot.
Rap is heavily focused on the spoken word that usually delves into a particular matter or subject (or even nothing!).
I struggle to find a song that's out today and say 'That's Hip-hop'. Unless it's underground and the song doesn't need a type of radio appeal to it.
Again, that's just my thoughts.
