-
dude is below average, niggas in the west just hyping anyone up because we so desperate for someone to blow like Game did
Nipsey is the ONLY new west nigga I've heard in the last 10 years I gave a shit about, besides Game

-
yeah he's dope but lets calm down

Surprised. The Snoop stan doesn't approve despite the fact his hero co-signed the album.
Easily a top five rapper out of the West. Probably top three.

Out of curiosity (no hating), drop your top 5 from the west.

If you still think he's overrated after listening to these two songs then :eh:
-
Kendrick just dropped one of the best albums Ive heard in years, real talk.
-
Kendrick is aight. He's cool if you're really into conscience type rap/"social" hiphop.
i personally don't think anybody can have album of the year (and yes i just KINDA said it about "Section .80"). there's too much out that's different and everybody has their own taste. that's why it still kills me when people are still talking about listening to tha radio like rappers and rnb singers are only supposed to have one channel #fuckizthat, like somehow we're all supposed to be in one place at tha same time and same channel like somehow all of us are saying and doing the same shit.
"Doggystyle" and "All Eyez On Me" came out where there was only 2 outlets (MTV/BET and Radio/TV - either or, lucky if u had all 3) and now there's oh so many different things to get and see music from. anyways, Kendrick's dope, he's new but he's a little old skool at tha same time
ChamillitaryCockBurglar doesn't have a top 5 or a top 10 from the West except maybe if their from the 90's. dude doesn't really know shit about music, he's probably gonna end up detailing fast food restaurants and cleaning parking lots on tha side when he grows up [seriousface]
-
I actually think K. Dot is dope and has a lot of potential but he is being over-hyped.
-
I would like you name 5 rappers on the west that are spitting harder than kendrick right now and that rap about better shit than him. He actually raps about intellectual shit and has messages in all his songs. Its nice hear something that isn't the same shit but like they say "first they hate you than they love you then they hate you again." No one was talking about kendrick a year ago until dre dropped his name then it caught tons of attention. People said he was dope now i see some cats on here saing he's over rated? Amazing what happens when some artists blow up and move forward with their career. Musically he's better, more interesting and different than anyone else on the west. He can still flip some gangsta shit. I'm 7 songs in on this album, and i already think this is going to be better than game's album, now i know for some posters on here that isn't shit but game's about to drop some dope shit, the timing is right for kendrick he's about to be on Game's album on the intro track. People will check this album then if detox ever drops, he'll be the new biggest thing. This reminds me of some kanye type of album with the song structure on each song. Really put work into this. I'm impressed

That's the thing. Dude has been dope but people are just riding his coat-tails now because of the Dr. Dre co-sign. According to everyone now, anything he drops, is dope. Before, when he dropped that C4 mixtape, people hated on him and said he was wack for using the Wayne Beats and trying to be like Wayne. Kinda sad, actually.
-
kendricks is the best album to come out the west since documentary ( i want you to name an album on the west where MAJORITY were good tracks, since than. not only good to the year, but consistent quality in production and verses.
dude takes it.
he has the best album of 2011, j. cole might change that.
kendrick is my top MC on the west right now, aint no1 doin it better than him right now.
lol i mean who da hell is everyone thinking when they say he aint even on the top 5 of their lists. i hope it aint the game or any old school cat, none have been consistent with quality.
crooked was at my top for a while just because there wasnt anyone to fill those shoes. dude missed his time to shine, which is a shame he could of been a legend (in a way he somewhat is, in an underground sense)
-

No order.
Crooked I
Murs
Fashawn
Kendrick
Blu
& lmfao @ Arthur getting mad because 98% of this board knows more about Hip Hop than his racist ass.
-
Dude is a beast lyrically, but haven't heard him hit to many notes so a nate dogg ??? I think he's letting his lil attention get to him.
Clinton Wayne
Kendrick Lamar
Crooked I
Obnoxious
Ice Cube
-
I wouldn't say he's overrated but he still has a long way to go.
I really enjoyed Section80. The song "No-Make Up (Her Vice)" I thought was really dope. Alot of that album doesnt even follow same song structures as most rap music today. It only sold 5.5k but on itunes it was the #1 rap album in 15 countires and #3 overall album in the US.
I wanna be 2pac too
-

Kendrick is dope but he's definitely not the only intellectual rapper. Aceyalone, Myka 9, Mystic, Blu, Evidence all have been in the game a minute, do intellectual shit and imo do it better. Can't we all just say dude is dope and stop overhyping every rapper that gets a cosign?
-
I haven't checked for dude since his k.dot days when he was weezy f jr.
But its cute that yall love dude so much. And the love fest will ONLY continue if he's unsuccessful. The minute dude blows up you guys will hate him, he'll be labeled a sell-out, he'll be wack, etc etc etc

How about a whole verse?
This the hardest shit you've heard from LA this far
And I'm this far, from a discharge but never will I dish off
We all tryna ball and when I got the rock I'll dish off
Until the day I pistol whip you posers till ya'll pissed off
Then peel off, in a hooptie
Come back and make these niggas wanna shoot me
And they bitches wanna salute me or seduce me
Indubitably I'm too street
Indubitably Ima do me
Better than your bitch would
But you niggas too weak, but just give me 2 weeks
And I'm good
I'll make an album that'll put a smile on Malcolm
Make Martin Luther tell God I'm the future for Heaven's talent
No tarot card reading I'm foreseeing you niggas vanish
Not only from the rap game, I'm including the planet
Cats so watered down clowns can sink Titanic
Tie titanium around their neck and watch em panic
Give me respect, dammit, or get damaged
Die young, corpse identified by your parents
Apparently you're a parrot
Mocking me and my blueprint
But I won't share it just make you cop it then call you a sheriff
Stop it, I'm hearin' the comments
The critics are calling me conscious
But truthfully, every shooter be callin' me Compton
So truthfully, only calling me Kweli and Common?
Proves, that ignorance is bliss
those are some multi-syllable rhyme schemes for yo ass
Dont get it twisted, hes top 3 best new upcoming from the west and has the talent & potential to be top 5 of all time west coast mcs.
-
The minute dude blows up you guys will hate him, he'll be labeled a sell-out, he'll be wack, etc etc etc
Yep. Just like every other artist that becomes successful in the West.

he's already getting attacked because of the dre co-sign
-
I'm not really feelin' Kendrick either, he's got some lines here and there, but he just seems all over the place to me...a new generation of ADHD rappers
But I'll support him since he represents the west
-
Anyone who denies this cat's talent/creativity/song-writing ability is stuck on 90's West Coast rap, point blank. The gangsta shit.
You are the same people who probably don't like any new school rappers that touch on different content than what was big in the 90's. Move on, it's done. There's a reason why Nipsey Hussle or Jay Rock haven't broke out and have been out for a longggg time longer than Kendrick Lamar. It's because that Gangsta super OG Blood/Crip rap is DONE. It really pisses me off when people say everyone is jumping on Kendrick because of Dre - when in reality, Dre came to Kendrick because everyone was already jumping on his buzz. Selling out concerts when all you've dropped is Itunes albums? C'mon now.
It's the same reason that Game or Jeezy haven't been able to drop an album in 3 years, the same reason why Wayne's buzz ain't what it used to be, the same reason why nobody is trying to hear 50 Cent anymore - people actually grew up and moved on from that image rap. Nobody's trying to hear about gang banging and shooting people up anymore.
On and for the record, Top Dawg Ent > any record coming out of the West at the moment. Jay Rock, imo, is the weak link on the roster, but still dope.
-
check out this kid from carson. his name is Young Xyphe. He's pretty good. real lyrical and his style is dope ! he just released a mixtape and its free to download on WWW.GEERAGEMUSIC.COM (http://WWW.GEERAGEMUSIC.COM)

The rap game needs to be diverse. it can't be all gangsta and it can't be all "bubble gum rap" about money, hoes and clothes. The West needs both, Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar so people can choose which one's rap is closer to them. If your grew up on 90's G-Funk/Gangsta Rap era - you prolly gonna pick up Jay Rock over Kendrick, just for the subject matter he's touching in his records. Folks that are tired of this gangsta shit should stuck with kendrick, cause he's really a breath of fresh air for the West Coast.
But it's no difference from back in the day, when you had Westside Connection spitting that gangsta shit and Jurassic 5 or The Pharcyde giving you that alternative hip-hop stuff.
IMO I don't need to move on from "G-Funk Era" to listen to new stuff - I can enjoy both, as long as it's good music. Too many dudes here are saying that "move on/grow up" type of shit - why can't y'all just enjoy MUSIC itself without giving a fuck when it's been recorded ???

SMH @ people saying you must be stuck in 90s if you don't feel Kendrick (or anyone else). Damn.. this "u stuck in 90s" bullshit got too popular amongst people on this forum and they keep on repeating it like they had no brain.
Don't you understand some people don't feel Kendrick because they don't feel Kendrick. This is so simple. I bet even reatrds can understand that.
I don't feel Kendrick but he made one song i like very much. I can't see how does it mean i'm stuck in the 90s.

It's different than Jurassic 5 and Pharcyde in the past because those did not sell back then. Those were underground.
Nowadays, people like Lupe, Drake, Eminem - that's the stuff that sells. Whereas in 1995, that type of music did not sell. If Kendrick Lamar debuts at #1 on the hip hop chart, it's safe to say his music is not for the minority like it once was. Gangsta rap in the 90's was a symbol of the times - crime was up, gangs were much more prevalent than nowadays, and the rate of kids going to college was at an all time low.
Now - crime is down, gangs aren't the "cool, hip thing" that they once were, and more kids are going to college than ever before. Times have changed. This is why I say that people are stuck in the 90's.
And by the way, Jay Rock is farrrrrrrrrr from G-Funk. Gangsta rap does not equal G-Funk. Warren G and DJ Quik were G-Funk but their musical content was far different than someone like Spice 1, MC Eiht, South Central Cartel, C-Bo, etc. Jay Rock and Nipsey Hussle are much closer to the latter than being closer to Warren G and DJ Quik. If anything, Kendrick Lamar is closer to G-Funk than Jay Rock.
There is exceptions - Game still spits gangsta stuff but he also has an intellect and better lyrics/song content than half the rappers. He's also been known to have a very diverse sound on his albums and bring guests to the table that your typical gangsta rapper wouldn't even think of (Common, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, Drake, etc).

the sound statement is not really true either.
you're right that game works with a lot of different artists, but some names are predictable

I'm talking about rappers from the West - Lupe, Drake and Eminem ain't West Coast. Kendrick Lamar has a big buzz right now, but it's not like he's selling million albums so it's not different from 90's era. None of the underground rappers from the West that had their 5 minutes of fame sold shit. Bishop Lamont, Crooked I, Clyde Carson, Glasses Malone, Jay Rock, Nipsey Hussle, Techniec etc. - all of them had great buzz before and didn't sell 1 unit yet. So don't get too exited saying Kendrick will go platinum or something cause we all have heard it before with dudes I mentioned earlier.
And I didn't say Jay Rock is G-Funk or Gangsta Rap=G-Funk. He's closer to that era than Kendrick because of the lyrical content he puts out in his raps - that's it.

Success aint measured by going platinum. Let's be real - only Em, Kanye, Drake, and Nicki went platinum last year. I'm not sure any rapper has gone platinum in 2011. That's not the measuring stick for success and what's hot. The measuring stick is where you chart on iTunes, and last I checked Kendrick was topping that list.
Sure, the rappers I mentioned are not Westcoast, but my point is that's what's selling. In the 90's, the Eastcoast and South rap that was selling was all gangsta stuff too - Mobb Deep, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Wu Tang, Master P, Juvenile, Scarface - do you get my point? You can't name me a gangsta rapper right now - from any region, that's doing big things.
