Title: How many 2Pac fans actually listened to him when he was alive?
Post by: Triple OG Rapsodie on August 28, 2011, 02:34:28 PM
Just curious because I thought I was older than most of the people here. But I was still only 11 when he died. Old enough to know him and like his songs but not really old enough to be a true fan of his. Some people here act like they rode with him as part of his entourage. When did you first get into his music? I did when All Eyez On Me came out and one of my brothers bought it and let me listen to it.

lmfao, my birthday didn't even come yet in '96, so I was still three.

NIK was nine, but had his entire discography down to every single lyric. Highly impressive.

I wasn't the big music and hip-hop fan I am today but at the time, he died, I was I believe, just starting starting sophomore year of high school. I loved Pac but I wasn't very aware of a lot of the controversy. I had a friends who bumped his shit constantly and he was a lot in the public so his music was always there. I remember that everyone in school when he got shot was convinced he would live because he'd been shot before. It's such a different thing to discuss now because Pac became so much more after he died, that it's crazy. His music and life took on new meaning and everything that followed with Big dying and the whole theories that Pac was still alive, he had become a fucking icon. What's weird is that I had loved "Keep Ya Head Up" from when it became a single but back then, it was just music. I didn't watch a lot of MTV or anything like that so music was just music. I didn't know who sang a lot of the songs, I would just listen to the radio and what I liked, I liked. Years later when I was well aware of who Tupac was, I made the connection and then I really was interested.

I was 12 when Pac died, and I had 2 CD's. 1 was How Do u Want it Maxi single with Hit em Up and the other was Dear mama which was on some Coke promo CD.

not bad for a 12 yr old I guess.  I bought Makaveli the day it came out. Crazy stuff looking back 15 yrs on. I was only 12 buying Makaveli. haha.

I was a teenager when Pac died... so I bumped his shit when he was alive.  It's interesting because I was old enough to remember all of the stuff going on, along with all of the MTV reports and all of that.

I was 11 when he died, didn't really get into him until All Eyez on Me came out.  If pac didnt go to deathrow I doubt I would of ever been a fan.  My pops had customers that worked up at interscope so I used to get all the deathrow shit for free.  I had heard some of his older stuff but never really paid attention.  They filmed the kitchen scene of Keep Ya Head up at my family house in South Central.  I was supposed to go to the hit em up video shoot but I didn't cause I figured I could just go to the next one.  All the other homies went except me and of course after that he died.  Kinda always bothered me that I didn't get to meet the dude.

I was 16 and I heard "Keep Ya Head Up" on TV and that's what got me interested in Pac.  I went out and bought Strictly For My NIGGAZ on cassette tape so i could play it in my car.  I was slightly dissapointed because the album version of Keep Ya Head Up was slightly different than the single version.  It had an extra instrumental piece during the chorus that I found somewhat annoying.  I think all the current pressings have the single version on them now.  Anyways, after I saw the video for I Get Around, and started listening to the album more, i liked it.  Then I bought Me Against the World after hearing Dear Mama and So Many Tears on TV and i loved that album.  I went back and bought the THug Life album after hearing How Long Will They Mourn Me on BET.  I remember MTV didn't play that video for whatever reason.  After that, i was hooked and bought every 2pac album since then.  I remember trying to record every Pac video off the TV that i could.  I don't think i ended up buying 2Pacalypse Now until after All Eyez On Me came out.  It took me a long time to get into 2Pacalypse Now.  At first when i bought it, i just did it so i could say i had every Pac album and didn't listen to it a whole lot.  After i played out my other 2pac albums to death, that's when I started giving it more of a chance.  I bought AEOM the day it came out, and pretty much every pac album after that i bought the day it came out at the store.  I was a huge Death Row fan too, ever since the Chronic, so once Pac joined tha Row, it was on!  1995-1996 era was great for me.  Soopafly also came huge with "I Don't Hang", and that made me a fan of his for life as well.

I've been in cali my whole life
Then perhaps you may have just been too young -- but barely.  I don't know how to explain it... there was just something special about being in California when Pac was alive, especially if you were coming of age.  Like I said, I was a teenager, and other people who were around that age may know what I mean.

I may have been young at the time but I know what it was like. I grew up in a household of people older than me who listened to Pac. And I was the one who personally connected to his music the most. He wasn't a god back then, he was a rapper. Hell, he wasn't even the biggest name on the west until he made the move to Death Row and put out All Eyez On Me. And I'd say that was his least emotional/meaningful album.

I remember California Love being huge even here in Norway and I digged the video.
And I have to admit that it wasn't until Changes got released I became a fan, so I guess I'm one of those fans lol.

I was 17 when he died and started listening to Strictly for my Ni@@as when it first came out. my friend brother worked at a radio station and used to hook us up with heaps of stuff. Living in Australia in the early 90' there was hard to get a lot of stuff but it was great to get Pac, Dre, Snoop, Spice 1, Cube, Ant Banks, Paris and heaps of stuff when they first came out. A great time to grow up..........

I became a fan a couple of years later with "Changes".

no spice 2, 2pac was already being treated more then rapper by me against the world & first time he got shot .

I knew about 'I get Around' because it was on a lot on MTV, and a year later I knew that I recognised a guy in Above the Rim when it was showing on "the movie channel" -  Which was Only one of 2 movie channels available in the UK at that time, and I liked the music on it, but didn't really check him out other than getting a taped copy of the Me Against the world album out at the same time through mere chance. No internet, no 20 music video stations, no multiple genre radio stations, nothing really out there to check out other than 1/2 Music TV stations, and a monthly magazine. That was it!!!! People had to go out to their music stores on a weekly basis and stay glued to MTV late night, and regular times to have an idea of what was going on in the mainstream.

Here in the UK, I get Around, & California Love were his 2 biggest hits getting good radio/TV spin. The other videos like Dear Mama did as well, but not as much as the other 2 mentioned. Never really bought All Eyez On Me when released because it was £23.99 at my local music shop when it was first out but I always wanted to get it. I made by with the Thug Life album which was around £14 if I remember right I was 12 at the time, and that CD was just too expensive, so I had that and a copy of Me against the world, then eventually strickly before I eventually got All Eyez On Me that Christmas with birthday money. I Didn't work, and I got around £5/10 a week, didn't buy Makaveli, but bought R U Still Down, and probably became a 'proper' fan of his music since I bought that CD.

People take today for granted... Today theirs easier access to artists, producers, label staff, tons of Music channels and radios, internet web sites, blogs, forums, Twitter/Facebook/Myspace, digital downloads, youtube, more concerts, awareness and global distribution today than back then for Hip Hop and Rap. You know what the hells going on without even trying lol. It's a lazy mans era, and it kinda shut the whole local "music" store, and experience down

lmao that movie was terrible IMO. i never understood the laudatory comments about pac's performance. his character was preposterous. but i really loved the early 90's swag so pervasive in the movie. same for above the rim, weak movie IMO but timeless soundtrack.

Same here, 16 when he died and I got into him when "strictly 4 my niggaz" dropped (I had heard his 1st album but didn't have it, I guess I never really cared for it). Pac is dope but he wasn't my favorite, Eazy-E has always been my all-time favorite. Here's a funny story...I was about 15-16 and "Eternal-E" had barely came out and "Me Against The World" had aready been out but was still fairly new. My best homeboy's favorite rapper was Pac and mine was E, he had just bought "Eternal-E" and my older brother had "Me Against The World". One night, I was talking to my homie on the phone and somehow we got on the subject of the 2 albums (I'm sure I brought it up cuz I wanted Eternal-E). Anyway, long story short, I ended up walking and meeting him halfway and traded my brother's "Me Agains The World" for his "Eternal-E"; my brother never knew, he just thought he had lost it ;D. Yeah, I know, that was pretty fucked up, but my boy wasn't trying to let his new Eazy-E cd go unless it was for Pac's. Shortly after, I ended up buying "Me Against The World" used at the Warehouse so my bro' and I had it again and it was all good. When I remember about bumpin' Pac back in the day I always remember that, the shit's funny to me.
