1st off, comparing these 2 rappers is crazy. Rakim is from a different time of rap and his influence is immense.
Rakim would be more comparable to Big Daddy Kane (Which I would vote for Ra, by the way).
As for Jay-Z, I think a parallel comparison would be Snoop Dogg.

How are you judging it? 11 platinum albums ain't a joke. Jay also has longevity & is still not only relevant but the most relevant. So Jay had a better career.

Rakim, yeah. Better "rapper".

Wayne selling in a week what Ye and Jay sold together in two suggests that he is not "the most relevent".

LMFAO, alright just take it as literal as you possibly can. ::)

Correction: Jay is the third most relevant, behind Eminem & Lil' Wayne.

...Still more consistantly relevant than Rakim has been throughout his career.

Rakim was way ahead of his time when he came out. Jigga has had the better career of course, probably the best of any rapper has ever had but when he came out in '96 Big was ahead of him and maybe Nas.

Why posters here "hate" so much Jay Z anyways ? I stop checking for his music after the Black album but he had some great material between 1996 and 2003 , some act like he's on Souljah Boy level ..

It's hard to compare them. Rakim was way more of an innovator and the best of his time when he came out. But he's also a one-trick pony who only excelled at "rapping about rapping", and did his best work as part of a duo. Jay-Z was never the absolute best in the game at any point in his career, but has lasted longer and has a better discography and just way more quality songs in general. I don't like putting Jay ahead, but I'd have to. Rakim's better at rapping, but more limited, and Jay-Z's better at making music.

Have to disagree. Jay is basically that artist where people will go out of their way to discredit his talents as a rapper. At least, two come to mind recently. His music ain't always my cup of tea but I can't deny him his credit.

I never really felt Jay in any big way. Liked some songs. I cant say he's a bad artist, but he isnt anybody special as I see it.
