Highlighter, People Under The Stairs’ most ambitious work to date, marks their 8th album release and captures the unparalleled group at the height of their 14 year career. More than just an indie hip-hop album, Highlighter’s outside collaborators comprise a group of influential LA indie-rock producers, engineers and live players featuring everything from full string sections to vintage vibraphones & keyboards. Recorded across a handpicked selection of Los Angeles studios, the duo dig deep into tape, consoles, obscure records and live players and emerge with a project that is both unique and yet familiar. Amidst the swirling musical landscapes, the P realize their most psychedelic album yet and continue to pioneer an alternate, innovative musical direction in rap music.

One of my favorite duo's just dropped an incredible album, been bumping it all weekend, i luv it....the worst part tho'? probably album of the year and yet watch this thread get no love and not even reach two pages....i know its not an old death row affiliated rapper or g funk related but this and the evidence album are the dopest to drop this month, maybe all year, bar none (included 9th's album maybe)
-
cool, have to check this out later 8)

One of the most consistent duos in west coast rap history, yet sadly, one of the most underappreciated. Thes One is one of the better producers out also (and has been for a decade). They really should be better known and get more recognition.
-
They're trying to get me interested in a rap album by looping some boring break for a minute and a half?
Well oddly enough it worked. But only because of the wtf factor.
-
I saw that it was released in 24bit version, will give it a spin

there's not a lot of people on this forum that actually discuss about music

Put "FORMER DEATHROW ARTISTS" in the title and see what happens.
probably 100x as many views...but i think they'll leave the thread pretty pissed off when they notice its not death row related...we could give it a try tho
there's so many good tracks on the album, Mean Spirited is my shit right now, loving that smells like teen spirit beat

After a few weeks I have to say this is, for me, the album of the year production wise. Incredible production, with lots of samples and instruments going on. Everything sound crystal clear. There's only 2 tracks I don't feel, but that's ok since the project got 20 tracks. I have to admit I've never been a fan of PUTS raps, but still, there's some tracks with nice flows.
1- Selfish Destruction - 4.5/5
Nice Intro. I love how the beat switches for the rapping, it's just perfect. The outro sounds nice too. It shows how the album is going to sound
The Second Coming - 3.5/5
Experimental, the bass sound is pretty nice.
Can't Hold It Back - 5/5
One of the highlights of the album. Very smooth vibe, true to their sound. I like the hook too. Nothing too lyrical but it's always like that with PUTS. Dope
Talkin' Back To The Streets - 5/5
Once again a very good track. Got that classic PUTS vibe. But the production is so smooth and polished. The sample fits perfectly the track to make probably the best hook of the album. End is crazy with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers sample. You can hear the Pete Rock influence here.
At The House - 3/5
Party track, nice vibe, nothing special
Too Much Birhtday - 4/5
Once again you can hear the Pete Rock Influence. As soon as I heard the track I tought: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBzoBnbUUxI
We Got It - 4/5
Nice flow, beat is a little repetitive, but since the song is short, it's ok
The Time Bandit - 3/5
I don't like rockish hip-hop
Foolish People - 4/5
Nice track, summer vibe
Ascension to Nowhere
Very experimental, funny concept. I like how the beat breaks with the voice. I can't really give it a note since it's too different from the other songs of the album. Imo it dosen't belong there.
Uprock Boogie - 5/5
I LOVE the bass on that one, very funky. Awesome track, well produced.
Electric Tookie - 5/5
Another banger, very nice vibe, it's so smooth. I like the raps too. Original
This Lifetime - 4.5/5
As this track start, you realize that this is the 3rd straight banger. Well produyced. The little sampled guitar that sounds almost like rhodes going very quickly in the background is just perfect. I wish they worked more on the chorus tough.
Cookie's Theme - 0/5
Doesn't belong there, very annoying interlude, it's so bad you will skip it as soon as it starts trust me.
Dewrit - 4.5/5
Another really good beat. Well produced, funky jazz, got that classic PUTS sound.
Mean spirited - 4/5
I don't think it's possible to do a better hip hop instrumental with that sample replayed. Dope chorus, but the verses feels a little empty
Sonic Elders - 4.5/5
Nice little interlude, very musical
WRLA - 3/5
I don't like the 1st verse. Beat is a little bit too smooth for the raps.
Left foot, Right Foot - 4/5
Nicely produce once again. It's really amazing how they can stack different sample on a single track while making it sounds smooth.
Ambient Hallway Music - 5/5
Closes the album perfectly. Smooth as fuck. The other highlight of the album to me. Very musical
Overall on this album PUTS are staying true to their vibe, but the production on this is really on another level compared to their previous albums. You can tell there's a progression on that side, but I feel it's almost always the same subjects over and over again. I don't mind it that much, and there is some nice raps here and there on the album, with a few original tracks.
