Title: weezer - the most unbelievable thing I've seen an artist do
Post by: Trauma-san on January 24, 2003, 07:59:20 AM
Man, I was over on www.weezer.com, and I don't know if yall know much about weezer, but get this.

Rivers Cuomo is the lead singer and head writer of the band, and basically, he's a genius.  In the literal sense.  For instance, after their first album, he went to Harvard, and said he'd be walking down the hall, and see kids with Weezer shirts on, and they never even recognized him, lol.

anyways, get this.  He's been going on his message board, on weezer.com, and talking with the fans privately getting ideas for Weezer's next album.  Emailing them back and forth answering their questions, because he said he decided that hardcore fans aren't in it for money like a producer would be, and wouldn't care what the albums sold, so it'd be a good way to get criticism that's ONLY artistic.

"One other thought: I went through a massive Oasis phase in 97-99. I bet Liam rubbed off on me. He's a very non-dynamic singer. Perhaps his influence wasn't a good thing. "

(answering people complaing about his voice sounding' different' on their last album)

"Do you think it's possible that the songs on Green are actually really good and that we just choked in the studio? I mean, not just me, but all four of us in Weezer. I feel like if we had managed to attack the songs with more conviction, people wouldn't have noticed the things like impersonal lyrics or repetitive song structures as much. But I could be wrong. "

Asking why they didn't like the last album as well.

He'd post like half-finished songs on the site, then ask people if they liked the direction, and if they did, he'd go finish them, or if they didn't, LOL he'd go change the song around, that's HILARIOUS, LOL.

I think that's awesome that he keeps in touch with his fans like that.  He even gave out free tickets to half the people on the message boards, on the last album, he thanked them and called them 'co-producers', and posts videos of them in the studio, and all that stuff.  Nice guy.

Yeah, weezer is a very respectable band.

Snoop would probably misinterpret it, haha.

This dude's like "So, you think the chord structure is good going into the chorus? I like the Dm, but then the scale rising up into the IV chord I think brings the dynamics to a level of intensity that sounds great"

snoop'd be like "I"ll bet yall groovin' to that Stacy Adams sticky icky, holla at a dogg"

I saw 'em live one time, ooh booy.  haha, it was awesome, in this little tiny club, everybody was singing all loud, everybody was drunk, yellin SAYYY IT AINNNT SOOOOOOOOOOOOO it was hilarious.  This dude next to me was about 450 pounds, yelling it, and dancing, LOL and then these two little girls jumped on stage, and the bassist chased them off stage (still playing bass) and dissapeared for about 5 minutes (STILL playing bass), and then got back on stage, haha.  Didn't miss a beat

Ain't feelin Weezer much, but it's cool how they treat the fans like that. Although Buddy Holly was dope.

Oasis though... I dig their shit. Too bad Liam's havin' those fits all the time, they can't do new shit. And it just ain't the same with Noel doin' the lyrics.

Yeah! I hope Liam gets his stuff together. Then again though they just released an album last year, so as long as they get in the studio sometime this year, we're all good!

i think beverly hills is very pop, but i gotta peep the rest of the new album..

It IS very pop, but there's a certain joke with Weezer music.  Buddy Holly is a good example.  The song is very very pop, but it's supposed to be, it's like a comment on how pop music can be good, but nobody makes it good.  It's a comment on how people say "oh it's pop" like you just did, for an excuse of why the song sucks.  In the video, they tipped their hand, they showed them dressing up on the Happy Days set, and showed everybody that it was a joke, and they were kind of making fun of pop music, but at the same time, perfecting it.

The new song is very similar, except Rivers has grown bigger balls by now.  The video is much less straight forward, it's hard to tell it's a joke, basically.  Sit back and think about the lyrics, the way Rivers looks when he sings the song, and the audacity of the video being shot at the Playboy mansion.  The bridge (where Rivers is just talking) is genius.

The truth is, I dont stand a chance.  its something that you're born into and I just dont belong

I love Make Believe, how about that We Are all On Drugs songto be an example like Beverly Hills and Buddy Holly

That's so brilliant, because he's saying it, like he means it, and he's sad about it.

In truth, the joke is he's making fun of people who GIVE A SHIT.  Rivers Cuomo would never give a FUCK about whether or not he's from Beverly Hills.  The song is like a comment on a comment.  It's hard to explain, I'm sure yall get it as well as I do, that's the best thing about them, it's unstated, and hard to put your finger on exactly where they're fucking around.  It's 10 times better than sarcasm, because they're saying something with sarcastic intentions, but no sarcasm.
