Apparently the other 2 tracks will be iTunes bonuses and Kendrick Lamar is a hidden feature on "Marvin's Room."

This is legit (apparently).

This album defies expectations which is really advantageous and for me was completely unexpected. Take a track like Take Care with Rihanna. We have the classic piano melody that would TYPICALLY Be developed into a full blown Rihanna chorus but instead we have a very controlled & smooth Rihanna who actually demonstrates her vocal ability and all the pent-up energy of the track is channeled when Drake raps. It's brilliant!

Random thoughts:
All the guest features work perfectly. Kendrick Lamar is so damn dope. It's dope that Drake allows him to spit so freely for over 2 minutes. That's insane amount of time to let loose to another MC.

Dope transitions between songs.

Drake took lots of chances with the album and it works just like Kanye West took lots of chances with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and it works. Personally, Drake & Kanye are in another league artistically than the rest of the game. They're not afraid to push the boundaries while being genuine & authentic.

Kendrick was easily the highlight of this entire album.

I fuck with "Headlines", "Underground Kings", We'll Be Fine" & "Lord Knows". The rest is pretty boring. The production is awful on so many levels. He has no stand out songs on here; I don't know what he'll make as a single. Guess that Rihanna song. He tried to sing over some lame ass production & he just doesn't have the singing talent or the lyrical material to pull that off for an entire album. The songs had no energy. "Thank Me Later" was miles ahead of this.

In this day & age singles are usually the worst songs on albums, but in this case "Headlines" is almost the best song lol. Pretty disappointed.

^ It's funny because I feel like the two singles thus far "Headlines" & "Proud of You" are the two tracks that although I dig, kinda' sound out of place with the rest of the album. Don't worry about singles, those two are already huge and "Take Care" with Rihanna is gonna be massive.

I think this is a pretty dope album after three full listens. It feels like ONE project, it flows very well and has an extremely cohesive sound overall. That alone makes it better than his first album to me. I feel like "Thank Me Later" had more "standout" tracks (it's hard to pick what my favorite songs are here) but that's because "Thank Me Later" just felt like a collage of good songs where-as this really flows like an album should. It's like picking your favorite scene from a great movie overall, instead of a decent movie that had 2-3 fantastic scenes.

Don't get me wrong, I dig "Thank Me Later" but I think this is better.

If Kendrick just rapped like that more often I would really be in to his music..

This album is really weird.. just.. a weird sound and his different styles of singin/rappin all sound awkward on this.. productions are shit too..

Headlines is the best joint right behind Kendricks verse and Underground Kings

random lines I typed while I was listening to it.... greatness.  A Canadian won't run Hip Hop but tha boy is just fuckin' nice, how about that?

and +25 for the "3 N Tha Mornin" sample at tha end of "Over My Dead Body".  I've been bumpin this album all day, love it so far.  His flow gets a little irritating on a few songs but it's ight.

i think this is pretty good.  i mean what/how much do u expect from a Drake album other than good modern music.  a few drums on the instrumentals could've been Live but the production is crazy!

^ It's funny because I feel like the two singles thus far "Headlines" & "Proud of You" are the two tracks that although I dig, kinda' sound out of place with the rest of the album. Don't worry about singles, those two are already huge and "Take Care" with Rihanna is gonna be massive.

I don't know. That song has no catchiness to it.

After a couple of spins it's pretty good. Like his debut Drake manages to get the album to have a certain atmosphere from the beginning to the end, and it has a few gems here and there (which to me would be Shot For Me, Make Me Proud and a couple more). Sounds like his hooks got better even though he pretty much uses the same flow for all of his raps.
No major complaints except that Birdman just talking at the end of Well Be Fine wasn't needed and Rick Ross wasn't exactly necessary on Lord Knows either.

Atlantic dropped the ball on not making "Castle Walls" a single. Would have DESTROYED radio.

I dunno, the beat plodded along too slowly, kind of the same tempo as that track he had with Chris Brown, I am surprised they didn't push it though

awww y'all need to cut that shit out and stop playin!  y'all know y'all fuck with it.  Dra'Killed Everything!

really tho i think it's a nice album, sounds like something i would've put together.  i can't really say i can call it a classic just based off the freshness of tha album but I wouldn't be mad if some individuals feel that way becuz i get why.

i'm with the person on the youtube comments section of this 1.  Drake broke away from the pack between him and Wale and J. Cole.  2 years from now you'll still be playing songs from this particular cut.  he shouldn't make a 2 year tour of it but it's got replay value.

i remember i made that "Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake" thread not too long ago lol, i'm glad to see them working together.  the transition between the song and the interlude was a little too long for my taste but i enjoyed the experience.

And that's pretty much all I have to say, I enjoyed the experience.  You're a hater in the bad way if u disliked this piece.

Right, I listened to this today so I can now make an informed critique of it.

It's even softer, duller and poppy than I ever imagined. Save for a few tracks it really is utter bullshit. I actually didn't mind Thank me Later that much - it had a few bangers on it. And I played So Far Gone a few times aswell. But this...there is absolutely nothing differentiating this album from a Britney Spears or Ke$ha LP to my ears. Its uninteresting, its forced, its supposedly emotional yet is entirely void of any passion, and the beats can't even be called beats. 40 can make nice little melodies a la Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but as a hip-hop fan and a music fan in general, that isn't enough.

The Rihanna guest song that some of you are wanking over is a new low for rap, and the whole LP (and some people's subsequent reaction to it) proves that Drake has made it acceptable in this game to be an artist that doesn't have to be good at rapping OR singing as long as you pander to your audience and are at least able to pretend to be both.

I'm sorry if this is hating. I just see it as my honest opinion.

Co-sign, just listened quickly through the album, and this sums it nicely up.

This album is elevator music.

For the record: a) that big ghostfase review is hilarious.
                     b) Dreams Money Can Buy was a track I digged but I've no idea why they never had it on the LP. The beat and background vox were great.

For me, that Just Blaze beat was the only thing on the album that I really enjoyed. The only thing over 17 long, dull, pop songs.

not a bad album for what it is...i never seen drake as a hip hop artists so its easier to digest all his sappy records. i actually prefer his r and b driven content.

ive always seen him as peers with guys like trey thongs and the dream....not rappers like jeezy and them.

thats where ppl get it twisted and you cant really blame them...hes presented to yall like a hip hop artist.

The major issue is that some of the posters here have a conservative construct of what social roles to be played by men & women.  Apparently being honest and crooning is a feminine quality that men should not exhibit.

If you're not feeling it that's fine but coming up with lame ass arguments as to why you're not and attempting to pass them off as facts is pathetic.

its a generational gap imo

our generation of men were raised to be a lil more rugged...the new breed is self absorbed and emo so they want to hear records by other ppl that are on that emo shit.

no more hard core posturing these kids are rapping what they feel looking for other ppl to identify with them.

the gangsta rap phase was very narrow minded not alot of room for self expression and uniqueness it stunted alot of ppls emotional growth.

I'm saying that it took chances and defied my expectations.  Because it did, it's advantageous for it.  So by taking chances and nailing the mark it's a better album.  All the risks he took are to it's advantage as an album instead of detracting from it.  Seriously, he could have went a lot of traditional cliche routes but he took risks.

As I said Take Care would be full blown techno song with Rihanna AHHHING the chorus if another artist constructed it.  Who ends a song like that besides Kanye West?

He gave an up and coming MC from the west coast 2 minutes of air time.

I'm not bothered by his style because it's the style he came in on.  It's not like switched up and started singing unexpectedly but even if he did I wouldn't care if I thought it was dope.

I like that there's a general theme and atmosphere (sound) to the album.

I like that the songs have a journey.  They're not just a sample repeated ten times.  You have transitions, highs and lows that don't repeat.  Again it makes me think of black milk's production when the MCs are done and he plays with the beat or again Kanye West..

I do that too and literally always have, it makes the song better.  it takes a beat and turns it into music.  i LOVE beats like everybody does but i like it even more when a Track is turned into a Song.  i always paid attention to things like that.  Drake did was he was supposed to do IMO.

There is just nothing that stands out.

At least his last album had some bangin' singles, "Light Up", "Up All Night", "Over" & a few others that had some replay value. This is just very bland.

& I was a fan of his first album, plus I'd consider myself a fan of Drake and a lot of really mainstream artists, so this isn't even some elitst nonsense. It's just not a good album. I thought Carter IV was pretty good. So I mean, it certainly isn't "mainstream hate".

I'm not going to get into silly semantics with you.  I explained myself in an attempt to better communicate how I felt.

Drake is the leader of his team.  That's like dismissing Rakim and giving all the credit to Eric B.  That's like dismissing Guru and giving all the credit to Dj Premier.  It's not one way street.  Why can't you recognize Drake has a vision?  He chooses his beats, he works closely with NOAH for a very crafted sound style.

edit:
as to whether he can sing or rap.  i don't care.  you're not feeling it which is cool.  i don't care if he's a great singer like tank or if he's the most technically apt rapper like eminem.  That's not something I always need.  A lot of indie artist I enjoy aren't techincally great singers.  A lot of punk artist I like can't sing.  Drake's style works for me and i enjoy it which is all that really matters.

What ? Drake is one of the most popular artist in the genre right now, next to Wayne, Eminem, Jay, Kanye. Yes, Drake fans. It's called a fan base. Since he has a bigger fan base than a lot of other rappers combined, I'd say that's a majority. So again, what exactly seems to be confusing you.

Usually an artist is "it" if he makes hot music. It's hard to be an "it" music artist if you music is trash. Yeah 50 was an "it" artist but he's not anymore. Yeah, I used to like him but not anymore. Why ? Because his music has downgraded significantly. Hence, I don't like him anymore, a lot of his older fans don't, his fan base is smaller, he's not an "it" artist anymore. What happens to an "it" artist if his music remains hot ? It's called longevity. It all boils down to music.

So whether I'll like Drake in 5 years or not ? I couldn't give a shit. If the music is right, then I will. If not, I won't. It's as simple as that. There's no big dramatic element to it, that you seem to imagine.

Backstreet boys and Britney spears were the "it" music at one point. But I'm sure it's just because they made hot music right meho?

Drake has more in common as an artist with Britney spears then he does hip hop. Good job, you share the same tastes as a 12 year old.  8)

Really like the album, Drake reminds me of Kid Cudi in that he's not a great rapper/singer but he makes good music because he knows what his sound is and he's comfortable with that. Seen some people say that the production is weak, personally i like it because Drake gets drowned out by huge beats like as much as i love that 'Lord Knows' beat i don't think it fits Drake, he's better over toned down, more simple beats. Only things i don't like are Nicki Minaj feature cos she's trash, the Kendrick verse simply cos i think it's pointless and the Birdman track, it's average should've been replaced by 'Club Paradise'

People moaning about the album if you don't like it then just don't listen to it, pretty simple
Title: Re: Drake - "Take Care" (Discussion Thread)

Yes they were it for their fan base, which is pop teenage crowd. When their music didn't meet their expectations anymore, they weren't anymore. Very simple logic.

Drake has more in common with Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi, B.O.B....again, nothing dramatic about it.
Title: Re: Drake - "Take Care" (Discussion Thread)
Post by: OG Jaydc on November 13, 2011, 04:08:24 AM
Lol @ at their music didn't meet expectations anymore. More like their fans grew up and realized the music was empty pop trash. The same things going to happen to drake, that's his fan base. Tweens.

And you've still yet to explain the majority comment. So because he sells a million copies that makes it the majority? Again, the majority of what? Rap fans? Because drakes fanbase is teenage girls not rap fans. And if em just moved four million and drake only did a million then that means not as many people like him. Hence, the majority aren't feeling him. I know you want that sheep herd to back you up but it's not working. It doesn't matter if he's bigger then other rappers that doesn't make it a majority. Because if you poll the population gauranteed more people won't like him then do.

I would call myself a Drake fan, I usually download all of his mixtapes, still bump So Far Gone and COmeback season, I usually check fan made compiliations etc. I think of him more as an RnB artist with a bit of rap flow and some good punchlines.

I also really like Thank me Later, but I have listened to this new CD twice now and I cant really find any songs I like. I was really looking forward to it as "Marvins Room, Im On One, Trust Issues, She Will" all had me excited for new Drake but this album is below average in my opinion.

Lmao what i mean is his music sounds how he wants it to sound, it's not like half of hip-hop who just jump on w/e the 'it' sound is. You can say it's soft, w/e is what it is

The Hip Hop audience doesn't automatically jump on whatever is hot.  I get so sick of people saying that when I never have and nobody I know has ever been like that except for random strange niggaz that u know from here and there.  I think children have too much influence over adults in Pop Culture.  Like i get it from a marketing/business POV but there is a line already drawn out in tha sand.

Some people who HATE Drake and Young Money and don't really RELATE to the artist YOUNGER than them (like Mak's Food/Liquor) need to have separate forums all to their selves.  I'm not saying anybody should kiss Drake's ass over this album and I'm not even saying his album is kiss-ass worthy (which is what the execs get fucked up) but "Take Care" is the shit.  Every track ain't bangin but that muthafucka nice.

So I tried to give this album another go.

Man. This is TRASH.

Seriously. I had to stab myself with a fork several times to keep from falling asleep. Like I'm sitting here trying to figure how a straight male can enjoy this. You have to create a new level of softness for this music. This is like if baby kitten fur and cashmere were combined for a super softness, you'd have drake.

I keep reading this nonsense about ohhh it's his sound, the atmosphere is amazing etc and I'm trying to figure out what you "males" do while listening to this drake. This music is the soundtrack of ovaries synching up to bleed on the same cycle. I imagine notorious Tda wearing a scarf indoors with painted on denims, knitting his grandma a reindeer sweater and drinking green tea while looking out the window on a rainy day. I imagine radiotube working at dunkin doughnuts scrubbing the toilets, turning the mop upside down pretending it's a black girl cuz it's covered in shit stains singing to it " I'm so I'm so I'm so I'm so proud of you." I imagine action walking down the streets on community watch patrol, reporting minor crimes even jay walking while singing " you gonna make someone around me catch a body like that." I imagine meho going to the strip club and requesting that back that azz up ballad song and proposing to strippers assuring them they don't have to do this to themselves.

Word to ghost fase I had to listen to ante up 18 times in a row to get the stench of simp from me after this album.

When do you muthafuckas listen to this shit? Do you play this in front of your crew? If I played this is in front of my friends I'd get knocked out. Do you listen to this with women? Women would want to be the big spoon if you played this in front of them. Do you listen to this on your headphones while riding the train? Just sitting in the corner crying to yourself?

anyone shittin on drake gotta be shittin on pac as well...pac was the emo / captain save 'em poster child of hip hop...

I wouldn't hate on anyone for making powerful emotional songs, those can be great if done well. However, Drake is just boring. His flow is boring, his delivery is boring, and his singing is average/borderline bad. Nothing the guy does impresses me. That's not even a defense of Pac, Drake is just boring as fuck.

And these aren't powerful songs. Just a bunch of simp anthems. What does a privileged rich Jewish kid from the burbs who's a child actor have to say? Nothing. This music is masturbation and simps can't get their hands lotioned quick enough.

hows the Just Blaze track? only thing im interested in hearing off this

The beat is actually brilliant. I agree with 'Makaveli's Food & Liquor' who said that it doesn't really fit Drake, but Just Blaze killed it with the usual epic sound.

would appreciate a pm...i aint downloading the whole album  :)

Just Blaze doesn't have to give beats on Drake and Ricky Rozay like that ... that's 2 wasted beats

To everyone saying Drake is too soft etc, you are clearly either 13 yrs old or live in some sort of fantasy land where the music you listen to must be about busting AKs at your enemies.

Drake is an R&B artist. He is very very good at what he does.

The music is good. If you don't like it, don't listen.

Go listen to your hardcore stuff about killing people and slapping hoes.

Drake is grown folk music.

If I wanted to listen to r & b id listen to someone who can actually sing, not studio magic drake. And lmfao @ drake being grown folk music. This is music for tween girls. No grown folk listen to this trash.

Wayne had Cash Money purchasing hundreds of thousands of albums nationwide. Same as Carter 3 and same as Big Tymers' Hood Rich that debuted at #1 back in the day out of nowhere.

Youtube and social networking are a good depiction of where pop figures fit in the realm of pop culture. Gaga, Chris Brown, and Katy Perry KILL Wayne when it comes to Youtube hits and social network followers, yet Wayne destroys them in sales. Makes zero sense.

Drake ATM seems to have surpassed Wayne in popularity, especially his singles in rotation. You're meaning to tell me Wayne is gonna sell damn near double what Drake does?

It's bullshit, and it's a scam. Even when people bought the shit out of albums, it was incredibly rare for even the most popular artists to sell a mill in one week, and you're meaning to tell me Wayne did it twice in this downloading era?

It's fraudulent and it's bullshit. If anyone wants a fair depiction, why didn't Wayne's 2 previous albums come even close to the sales of Carter 3 and 4? Because it wasn't in Cash Money's interest to pump an artist in jail, especially when they were on the verge of dropping the two biggest modern pop stars, Drake and Nicki. It's so obvious to me, and it's hella wack.

Care to elaborate why this is the dumbest post of the forum? It was suggested even by MTV in 2002 that Cash Money was guilty of this.

Well for one, lil Wayne was in jail after Carter 3 and before Carter 4,not before that. So your comment about not wanting to pump up an artist in jail makes no sense. And if you can't tell the difference between his buzz when c2 came out and when c3 came out, you must live under a rock.

Secondly, buying your own records is a myth. It makes ZERO sense for any business. They would be losing tons of money.

Thirdly, drake and minaj are lil Waynes artists. Their fans are his fans, they aren't exclusive. He brought them into the game. He gave them their fanbase. Minaj is basically the female Wayne and drake sounds like a Wayne clone half the time.

And also why wouldn't cash money buy copies of rebirth and I am not a human being? Waynes two albums between Carter 3 and Carter 4? How do you explain that in your theory?Surely they would have wanted to make sure those sold a milli too right?
Title: Re: Drake - "Take Care" (Discussion Thread)

I never said Wayne was in jail before Carter 3, dumbshit. When I was referring to his 2 previous albums, I was referring to Rebirth and Human Being, dumbshit. It makes sebse that they'd pump Nicki and Drake during Wayne;s jail time, takes attention away from Wayne sitting in jail (it aint cool and hip like it was in the 90's to be in jail), and you're wrong when you say Wayne has the same fanbase as Nicki and Drake.

12 year old girls like Drake and Nicki - that is not Wayne's core fanbase.

It does make sense to buy copies - money comes back in your pockets, and nowadays sales mean everything to an artist's credibility. I've heard label heads specifically say "we can tack 50,000 sales onto whatever projected number we get just to help" - so shut the fuck up Mr Know It All.

The fact that you said Drake and Big Sean have zero talent = no credibility as a music fan.

It seems hard to believe anyone would be buy albums. It would be so obvious. Somebody would say something like, "Hi, can I buy two hundred thousand copies of Carter IV?"?

Wayne has a fanbase like no other. I thought Drake would sell more, but he didn't. Also, if Wayne bought albums it's not like Drake didn't know that. & Drake was just going to sit there like a bitch & sell half of what Wayne did first week.

dont know why the fuck a record label or rapper would buy copies of their own release when they would be paying more than they were making off it

When people like you say 631k is a failure, it proves how much sales mean this day and age.

If Wayne sold less than Drake and Nixki, his position would be tarnished.

I don't care what anyone says - I refuse to believe Wayne sold twice as much as everyone else when his singles and Youtube buzz is half as much as several other artists. He has a rep to live up to.

By him doing that, he can now go to any major concert venue (and I don't mean House of Blues type venues, more like Madison Square Garden venues) and get booked. Only Jay and Ye can command that kind of showcase, and now Wayne obviously.

With that in mind, the loss of 300,000 dollars (which is what it would amount to if they purchased an extra 250,000 copies themselves), it is a fraction of they amount they will make back in tour money and having Wayne tracks in commercials, video games, etc. It's actually a wise investment when looked at from that angle.

Yall can believe what you want, this happens in the record industry.

2Pac was twice as big as Wayne is now and he never came close to 1 mil in a week - even when releasing double albums that counted as 2 sales for each album sold. You can choose to look thru rose colored glasses or face the truth, makes no difference to me.

nobody goes sees an artist because of a number. Mac Miller & odd future sells out all their shows and they don't sell that. the general public doesnt give a shit about album sales. They care about what they hear. Maybe he would pay to get music on the radio or itunes features but buying your own albums is pointless

You're missing my point. Mac Miller and Odd Future sell out small venues that fit 1000 people. Wayne will sell out venues that fit 20,000 people. Unless you have sales to prove that buzz, those big venues won't even give you a shot.

What singles did Drake have that you keep talking about? "Marvin's Room" & "Headlines"? I don't know if you're an old man who is out of touch with today's kids. But let me assure you that "She Will", "6 Foot 7 Foot", "How To Love" & "John" are a hundred times more popular.

& on top of that Lil' Wayne's fan base is that much bigger. I'd say 99% of Drake's fanbase are Lil' Wayne fans & were Wayne fans first. But not all of Lil' Wayne fans are Drake fans.

Not to mention, Wayne didn't actually sell a million. He sold like 950,000. Which is only 300,000 more. Add everything I said about & there is your difference. As for Nicki Minaj, I'm not even going to talk about her. She's got fans, but why you acting like guys are going out to buy "Pink Friday"? ???

Sure, she appeals to people that don't feel Wayne, but in return Wayne's male fanbase isn't going out to cop her album.

Further proof that YOU are out of touch - chicks are the ones who buy albums, point blank. I'd say it's even somewhere in the 70/30 ratio of females purchasing albums to males.

Hence the reason Wale couldn't sell a lick last time and this time he makes some songs for chicks, almost every chick I know likes Wale at this point and he sells nearly 10 times as much as he did last time (and that's with Lady Gaga on his single). J.Cole, 90% of his fanbase that BOUGHT the albums are females, strictly off that "Work Out" joint. If you appeal to the females, you will sell records.

The biggest artists that sell this year outside of YMCMB: Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Chris Brown - it ain't dudes purchasing these records.

I mean, girls guy female albums & Chris Brown & Drake. Guys buy basicially everything else but that. There is balance.

Wale didn't sell more than 250K because he's nowhere in the same universe as the guys at the top of the game in terms of popularity.

how is that coming out of nowhere...they just came off the strength of a double platinum album and the new single was number one off the new album and i remember they pushed that album hard promotionwise...

there is no reason to talk to dude. He thinks girls actually look at sound scans to see an artist.

Drake was selling out stadiums before Thank Me Later dropped.
Wiz was also before Rolling papers dropped.

beat has jay z written all over it. Game was the first name that came to my mind with crooked. I think nippsey would compliment it well too.

my vote would be TI or Game to rip it. Nas would be ill too
