Title: Dre and Kurupt discussing Death Row and more stuff (November 1998) *Rare*
Post by: PhunkyDoob on December 12, 2011, 01:19:54 PM

In Philly shooting "Ask Yourself A Question". They discuss Death Row and other things, very dope video and actually kinda rare to see how "freely" Dre spoke about things cuz you normally don't see
shit like that from him especially nowadays.

Ps. I don't think Pt. 2 has been uploaded just so you know.

While it diluted the material (I can only name a handful of songs that I ever really cared to listen to more than once), I don't remember it costing much more than a regular single-disc album (as I bought it the first week) plus I'm sure it helped the sales figures (which are doubled when it's a double album).  "We Can Freak It" was enough of a banger to get people to buy it.  From what I remember, it dropped the same week as Bizzy Bone's album (Heaven'z Movie) and outsold it.

That video is/was rare. Dr Dre was not really permitted to speak about Death Row Records so openly at the time. He had a legal case against the label for years

Well, they still did things together... there was Ho's a Housewife (which appeared on both 2001 and Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha) plus Dre put Kurupt on a few 2001 tracks (Xxplosive and The Next Episode), but then remember that Kurupt went back to Death Row and wasn't on good terms with Daz or Snoop at the time, let alone Dr. Dre.

Him and Dre actually stayed cool with each other during his time at Death Row. In an interview with Rime Magazine, I remember Kurupt saying he would never talk bad about Dre because even though Dre was the one out of the core people he came up with that he chills the least with on a personal level, he was also the least dismissive of him publicly for signing with the label. Dre somewhat reinforced this by giving him a shout-out at the Vibe Awards after that whole melee incident ensued.

yeah even during his stay at Death Row, Kurupt clamored publicly his love and appreciation for Dre and Dre was never the one to be very vocal about his feuds except for Eazy E and Jermaine Dupri so he never said anything about Kurupt. I remember an interview from that period where Dre was being photographed in front of a framed Death Row picture. People were talking about how intentional it was and how Dre wanted to cease fire. but that was just before the Vibe Awards incident.

Much tougher to put an album out now. The presurre is gigantic on his part and no matter what he does is people are likely to going to shit on it. Interscope is relying on him to give the music industry a shot in the arm. The West Coast needs him to create that interest so all these other guys can eat. The fans all want different shit and have grown increasingly impatient with all the delays. And on top of that, he got people leaking all these tracks and having the public SHIT on them. People are expecting the GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL-TIME and that's a hard thing to just walk in and create.

no way he can come close to the commercial success of 2001, or the critical praise that The Chronic got. Plus the confidence issue like Dre-Day stated.

I think it is entirely possible to do both. The longtime fans will be the toughest sell because they are too specific in what they want and anything other than that is the end of the world to them. He needs to stop worrying about doing either and just concern himself with making great music. Dre done had his hand in too many hit records not to have one more great album in him.

i think he had a nice sound in the last few years, its a shame he didnt release an album with his sound.

imo its pointless to start over again with detox. they should just hire some fans to pick songs from the vault haha!

alot of the tracks he did with Mark Batson on Eminem's albums were for Detox

I don't like the idea of Dre as a featured rapper on other producers tracks, its pointless

yeah, I know he said that he would release Detox after Eminems(Relapse) and 50's album in '09

IMO alot of those tracks were for Detox but you may be right, we need confirmation from Dre's people

Dre needs to put out the album that HE wants to make. If he makes an album for anyone other than himself, then it will fail. He needs his passion. He needs to make this album for himself. Not the fans, not the sales, not a game changer...just an album in which he feels is a masterpiece on his own terms.

He obviously can't please everyone. That being said, I would rather him put 100% passion into the album, what HE wants, rather than try and cater to some crowd and not be the real Dre.

But deep down I don't think this album will ever be released. I think Dre cares too much about what other people think about him, and he doesn't want to disappoint other people.
