My guess is a lot of smaller independent labels don't have soundscan access because its expensive, but most bigger labels/distribution companies have access to soundscan and can disclose to their clients where they have been selling and book shows/promo gigs accordingly.

But there are many different levels of soundscan access, the cheaper (still expensive) packages only get you sales reports sent to you for your specific records once a week with updates. Complete access lets you search the database, sales breakdown by region, view charts etc.

However, soundscan is U.S. only. At EMPIRE we have access to iTunes worldwide sales where we can see who bought what from which iTunes store, but other retailers don't report as frequently.

I'm sure they can. It would explain why a lot of boom bap rappers and backpackers never tour in Cali
