The Chronic is the G.O.A.T.
True! But I still love "Black Mafia Life" - Ruthless ganxta funk at its best!
-
I've never really liked Dre as a rapper, but as a producer at his Death Row days he has always been dope. But overall I gotta go with the Above The Law album. Their beats are dope and they are the way better rappers.
-
i gotta go with the chronic but black mafia life is hella tite there both classic IMO cold 187um is tite on that cd especially never missin a beat

Black Mafia Life was released in 1993 whereas The Chronic was released in 1992 so how could Dre have bitten ATL? Plus Dre used G-Funk on Niggaz4Life anyways which was released in 1991. He also worked on ATL's debut.
-
black mafia life was released in 1992
-
very tough...Black Mafia Life is hard...very solid..ATL drops the best albums no doubt...but i think the Chronic barely edges it out...just on the strength of the hits...
-
Have to go with Black Mafia Life. In an interview in the source Hutch said that he played Dre Never Missin a Beat and he liked it. This was before Dre left Ruthless. Above The Law was going to go with Dre to Death Row but decided to stay with Ruthless. Thats why Hutch got mad when he heard dre day cause he said it sounded to much like never missin a beat.

If we're talkin about these two producers in general then it would be Big ole Hutch over Dre by far, but if we're talkin about albums then I gotta go with the Chronic. I do feel that Dre bites a lot of shiit from people and if you listen to ATL's EP - Vocally Pimpin you can see what ATL was masterminding. Although, these two albums are in my rotation equally, Chronic is a classic masterpiece that was created to make or break Dre as a solo and was backed by young hungry artists out for that scrilla and fame.
-
This is an interesting post, lol. But I hate polls that really don't give you a criteria to vote for and for the direct similarities of both albums, things can sway in either direction.
I LOVE THE CHRONIC point blank, that album was dope as fuck, the production, the new talent, everything.
I LOVE BLACK MAFIA LIFE, not MY favorite ATL albums, but ONE OF MY favorites.
But it's kind of hard to really say that they are on equal footing because.......
Chronic- was really a compilation album (with new unknown upstarts)
BML- was a solo group album with a few guest appearances inclusding young upstart 2Pac but he wasn't no where near the icon status fans have given him after his death.
Chronic - was surrounded in controversy with Dre leaving Ruthless, the appearance of Suge Knight, everyone wanting to know what Dre would be doing without NWA
BML- second album from a group (with a classic first album) with a gangster foundation, but with a political pro-black twist. No controversy to accompany the group except the socked Cube and Da Lench Mob the fuck out in NYC, but that's old news.
Look at what Dre did with his second compilation (.....Presents The Aftermath) that shit was garbage. He basically did that album by himself and fools weren't checkin' for him. But the Chronic he took ideas from ATL, had more influence and input from other MC's and producers, which made it a better album, but ATL did all their own production and basically it was a group album done by the actual group. Again it all compares to personal taste and face it, due to the controversy surrounding Dre, Eazy, and Suge that automatically gave The Chronic the promotion it needed to sell, but things would of been different is the Chronic was a solo Dr. Dre album produced fully by Dre. In that scenario, Dre couldn't touch ATL on the production and especially the MC'n tip, since The DOC wrote all his lyrics for The Chronic. But at the end of the day, The Chronic and BML were great albums in their own right. I wonder what would of happen if ATL had put out a compilation album of the same nature as the Chronic with a gang of featured guests and production taken from various people and sources? Hmmmm.........

i think a better poll would be Uncle Sam Curse vs Chronic,
-
No doubt The Chronic, but BML is tight as fuck!!

my BML says 1992 too btw
those sites are wrong a lot, i've read lots of sites that say the chronic was 1993 too, but i asked my uncle and he says he remembers BML comin out first
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that The Chronic came out on Dec 15, 1992. The Source that is West Coast Vet's avatar is the Nov 1992 issue and it talks about Dre's upcoming album. Plus I remember picking it up Dec 16th because I had been checking for the album since the Source cover. Plus I was reading an ATL article in 4080 (the one with them on the cover that said Above the Law-G Funk Originals on it) and it mentioned "the dark 1992 album Black Mafia Life"
I'd have to go with the Chronic on this though, even though ATL is my favorite, most consistant group.
Btw, what were the singles for BML? I have the VSOP single with the remix but what were the other singles from this album?
peace,
tnp

I know this thread is old as fuck, but it's very interesting and it made me think about some things.Firtst of all, I recently read an interview with Hutch (from 2004) and he said that he was tought almost everything about producing from Dre, and it didn't surprise me since they've worked together on ATL's first LP.Secondly, damon x's post had some really relevant points, but I gotta disagree with some of them.As far as I know,Dre took the concepts from BML only for two songs - "Dre Day" (from "Never Missin' A Beat") and "Let Me Ride" (from "Pimp Clinic") which, I think, doesn't mean that Dre didn't "fully" produce his album, unless he jacked some other shit from somewhere.
As far as "who started with the G-Funk", another post made me think about this: Which album was released first "Niggaz4life" or "Vocally Pimpin'"?Hutch is my favourite producer after Dre, and if "Vocally Pimpin'"(an amazing and classic EP for me) was released before NWA's album, I wouldn't mind at all giving all the credit of G-Funk's creation to Hutch.
-
It's not a good idea to revive old topics.
Anyway, I been an ATL fan since the days of wayback (since I grew up in Pomona), but I gotta admit that even if Dre jacked G-Funk from them (and I still ain't convinced that's really the case), he still did it infinitely better. The status of each album doesn't lie - "The Chronic" is considered a classic across the board, whereas "Black Mafia Life" is all but forgotten except by the most die-hard West Coast heads.
