How do you feel about rappers depicting and glorifying the gang lifestyle and throwing up signs when they arent living it?
who are the worst examples of studio gangsters on the WC scene?

I know they're not from the west coast, but I have to point out Lil Wayne and Birdman, since theyre on the west coast enough and doing a lot with people like Game and Jay Rock and soaking up their slang.
-
If someone who doesn't really know much about the lifestyle does it it's kinda like whatever to me. I mean it's a bit dumb/annoying in one way but on the other hand music is to me above all expressing emotions and if someone was feeling "like a gangsta" and then did a song about it then yeah whatever, I'll listen to it if it's a good song.
On the other hand if someone actually has lived that kind of life and then still goes on to glorify it it's kinda questionable to me. The best gangsta rappers are about realism and also talk about the negative sides (but not just them, preachy shit sucks too). For example a song like NWA's One Less Bitch is an example of great gangsta rap, a realistic depiction of the sex trade. After listening to it people will be able to make up their own minds whether or not it's the kind of thing they really want to be involved with. The "pimping is so cool it's just fancy things and pretty women" rap is what's kinda... sociopathic. But I'll listen to that too if it's a good song, that's really the bottom line.

At the end of the day rap is just music which is entertainment. Although some rappers may not even know about the gang lifestyle but still rap it, alot have either
done it whilst younger or grown up around it so they are telling the stories that they know or have heard.
But think about it this way, if all gangster rappers were really out their still banging whilst making music then how many do you think would live long
enough to record a second album?

Xzibit's Paparazzi video puts it the right way... shows how absurd the thought of niggas robbing a liquor store, then going on to shoot a video for a multi-million single really is. Noone releases a hit record from the hood. You most likely have to meet normal people too, also work with whites and Jews. Plus petty theft makes no sense when you're robbing little kids for their money on tours already. So it is what it is.

its not about that theyre not currently commiting all these crimes, its more that they made up a fake life story for themselves and use it to promote themselves. a better question is who isnt a studio gangster, these guys are entertainers only a handful were real deal criminals

I know you didn't. That post was directed at 99% of this board though, not necessarily you bro.
Most everyone on here thinks it's cool to be a "gangsta" when in reality, weather it be a "real" gangsta or a studio gangsta, they're all lame as fuck.
Back in the day, when "gangsta rap" was at its peak, a small percentage of us liked it for the production, and sometimes the message/lyrics, while everyone else got brainwashed into thinking that in order to be cool in life you gotta be a G.
Real Gz end up in prison or dead, and fake Gz end up like Daz...fat, stupid, and still pretending to be cool on the internet.

Interesting article I was reading on the early days of the West Coast hip hop scene
Gangs. Crip, Blood, Mexican, and Asian gangs exploded on the scene like never before. And with the money behind them from the crack explosion of the 80’s they now were able to influence the youngsters of the party scene with there shiny toys, jewelry, cars, and clothes. Easily influenced, Hip Hop went ìGangsta’î. House parties and Mobile DJ functions became targets for drive-bys. The first killing actually called a “drive-by” by the media was committed at a house party on 54th and Hoover. The party and gang scene became so intertwined that some the hottest DJ’s , promoters, dancers, and of course rapppers, were Crips or Bloods. Even some of the “Trendy” dance and party crews on the Westside eventually evolved into street gangs. The writing was on the wall.
I was at a party given by 1580 KDAY at the Olympic auditorium where the latest New York hip hop artists like Kurtis Blow and L.L. Cool J performed. About fifty Rollin Sixties Crips, proudly wearing sweatshirts with iron on letters spelling ì60 CRIPî, started swinging and stomping on anyone in the crowd- including security. The infamous incident at an Uncle Jamm’s Army party at the Long Beach Convention Center where a party goer was fatally shot contributed to their downfall. L.L. Cool J performed at World On Wheels skating rink and was attacked by Crips for wearing a red sweat suit. Tone Loc’s crew (the LOC Tribe) had beef with the Samoan rap group the B.O.O.Y.A. Tribe causing a big fight and shoot out at the Hollywood Palladium. There was a killing at a dance given by Spectrum Productions, which was a predominately Asian event- and a stabbing at a Mexican wedding reception forced Ultra Wave out of their home at Veteran’s Auditorium in Culver City, even though the incident didn’t occur at an Ultra Wave event. It wasn’t safe to party in L.A., not for young people anyway- particularly young minorities. The venues would not rent out to crowds under twenty-five anymore, especially minority crowds (even though by now, especially on the Westside, the crowds were becoming more and more ìmixedî as caucasian kids were being drawn to the scene) and if they did the L.A.P.D. and fire marshall would come and shut the party down- just like they did Central Avenue.
The day of the mobile DJ, huge sound systems, picnics in the park, was over. Promoters turned to clubs who mostly had liquor licenses, which prevented them from allowing patrons under 21. And most of these venues already had their weekends booked. Teenagers couldn’t party on weeknights. Although some promoters were able to focus on the 21 and over crowd, the teenage scene was dead. The Mobile Disco Crews, the backbone of the party scene, the scene which gave West Coast Hip-Hop it’s first voice, almost vanished over night.

if you not from the streets and and haven't lived at least most of what you rhymed about you can do gangsta rap but not in first person. it can be done from a spectator's point of view. but it would have to be creative and not get niggas in trouble..... other than that if you frontin' on the mic you a fraud. bottom line. i love gangsta rap but i despise those studio gangstas.
You mean the majority of rappers? ;D
-
All gangsta rappers are studio gangstas really. None of them are putting in work as gangbangers.

theres a fine line I guess between portraying the lifestyle and glorifying it. Spice 1 was targeted by CJ Mac and Mc Pooh for being a Studio gangsta and if you look at his early work he was definitley glorifying and playing the role of the sterotypical Gangsta/Superman. Later on he tried to move away from that role into more of a pimp/hustler
The bodycount in his early albums was up there with Rocky 3
-
Mc Eiht also had a huge bodycount in his early work, a lot of his tracks had Eiht being set up but then coming back to wreak terrible vengence on his enemies
One less Nigga was essentially genocide on wax

Kurupt of late has been portraying this strange role of global villain with access to an enormous array of top shelf weaponry that when used dismembers and obliterates his nameless adversaries
studio terrorist?
-
Rap Music should be considered entertainment. No one questions actors in movies and gives them flack for being real or fake gangsters.
Lil little kids get confused, I guess.

yeah, but are you really gonna listen to a gangsta rapper talk about locs, 100-spokes, and drive-bys when you know the only crime he's ever seen was on TV?
-

The difference is that off-camera, you don't see those actors still portraying those same roles that they took on for that project. The persona ends when the director says "cut." Rappers are still talking tough in interviews, or throwing up signs in pictures at whatever events they're at, very rarely explaining the difference between their rap personas and real life. That's all that the world deserves from these people, which would benefit them... unless they want to get chin checked (if they're at the wrong place at the wrong time), called "fake" (if they don't come through or just end up being all talk) or let the younger generation think that it's all real, then they try to soak up their game and portray that themselves. It's like that one kid got his ass spanked with a belt by his uncle on camera for trying to act like he was a G... I don't doubt that he was just thinking that all that gangsta rap shit is cool and that's how he has to be.

gangsta rap is from niggas either spittin' what they seen or heard from other niggas or acually lived it and are tellin' they story on wax. there's more than one aspect of hip hop. hip hop is multi layered like dr. dre tracks ya dig.... that's the point of hip hop. if you didn't live a gangsta life you shouldn't portray it on the mic. if you didn't hustle or rob niggas it's ok to be yourself. be yourself or be nobody.

Actors are playing roles for the purpose of telling stories. It would be one thing if rappers were admitting they assume characters in their music for the purpose of entertainment. But they don't. They act that way outside of the music and pretend like its reality.
