Title: school me on OG daddy V
Post by: Sir Petey on March 26, 2012, 08:27:55 AM
by the time dude came out i wasnt really listening to too much shit with the gfunk vibe, the other day during a long car ride a album of his came on that i didnt even know i downloaded and honestly couldnt tell you the name of it right now but i found it to be thoroughly entertaining in a nostalgic kind of way the beats were tough and sometimes i couldnt tell who i was listening too becasue i was hearing so much influence from other rappers. was that nate on there or was dude doing a nate impression? dude sounded just like him on a few of those hooks.

-blowin kush w/ snoop
-westside music
-welcome to the west
-my own lane were songs i can remember off it.

anyways what is considered his essential listening...where would one start to catch up on daddy v and give me a little of his back ground.

i tried dubcc search function and that didnt work for shit.

Check out these two albums:

It's just a Ghetto Thang (http://www.discogs.com/DMG-Daddy-V-Its-Just-A-Ghetto-Thang/release/1672175)

The Compton OG (http://www.discogs.com/Daddy-V-The-Compton-OG/release/3423513)

I had completely forgotten about that Compton OG album! Used to listen to it quite a lot. This is the best song (produced by Battlecat):

Heard two other albums from him too. Both were released by some weird Japanese label.

Compton & Long Beach - Pretty good, lots of LBC feats

LA French Connect - "French G-funk" beats... People who like that kinda music will maybe appreciate this.

Would like to hear some more about his background as well.

U didn't hear his Nate tribute 'We Won't Forget'?

Anyway dude is dope but I couldn't tell you the best of his albums really. I know there are some big Daddy V fans on the dub who can tho..

Yeah it was the Original Hustla that you listened. It dropped early 2011 at the same time as "Ragtop Music" another Daddy V album, no featurings, with a strong summertime feeling. A cool album too.

And yeah like it has been mentionned you need to check his 1995 debut It's just a ghetto thang and Compton OG who dropped in the early 2ks.

And I like that song "Weed blowin" with bad azz off some mixtape.

Let us know your fav songs.

The Nate impersonations are done by Daddy V himself, it's pretty good IMO, didn't know Daddy V could actually sing.

Dude is a CPT rap pioneer, started with Mixmaster Spade (R.I.P.). As it has been pointed out, his first album with DMG (not to be confused with Rap-a-Lot's DMG) is pretty good, DMG singing and him rapping.

http://www.youtube.com/v/JumkYhx1koY

Then he went on a hiatus for a few years and released underground tapes I believe and then hooked up with Snoop Dogg and Dre around 00 and he's been down with Snoop ever since.

In 2002 he released The Compton OG with a gang of features mainly from LBC & CPT, a lot of good songs on this one, my favorite being "that's my homeboy" feat. CPO & OG Cuicide

http://www.youtube.com/v/bLRwC-ECOMs

he released a slew of compilations that i never listened to (i guess they were mostly available in swap meets) but i suppose it's bumpable...

In 2010 he dropped a    Compton N Longbeach  compilation for the Japanese... it's actually pretty good and a lot of dope tracks on it

http://www.youtube.com/v/EiGwC93Npk4

http://www.youtube.com/v/RmDeQRS_Llo

http://www.youtube.com/v/B_nqpRfkaPo

Then, a month later he released LA French Connect with most of the French G-FUnk scene, i doubt you're interested lol, and tbh I haven't listened to that one either lol.

He released The Original Hustla in 2011 too, I haven't listened to that one, but i guess it's the one you're talking about in the first post. And i've just noticed that he supposedly released another album called Ragtop Music with several collaborations with French rapper/producer Aelpéacha.

DMG singing and him rapping.

DMG singing ? You sure ? I am quite positive it's Daddy V singing, DMG was handling production. Anyway their collaborative album was pure g-funk.

Not sure, but i always figured that since Daddy V was handling all the rapping, DMG was doing the singing, but you could be right, which would make Daddy V a dope singer too lol.

used to have a few Daddy V-cds back in teh day, but i sold em before i really listenend to any of em.
some of the Snoop/"welcome chuuch"-mixtapes, "OGTV" soundtracks n such

i do remmebr, that i liked "its just a ghetto thang" tho.
check it out, if u have some time

just like, Foesum -- Daddy V is one of those forgotten westcoast-rappers that sell cd's for a living in  G-funk-nostalgic countries like France and Japan.
not neccessairly a huge fan of his, but i heard a new song not too long ago, called "west coast music",, very cool song, n i liked the vid

Yeah, I've read he performs at a lot of Lowrider type of events. cause G-Funk is the main type of hip-hop that the lo lo community listens to.  Lot of the 90s rappers have been making a living doing that circuit, especially in Japan, the lowriding scene out their is almost as huge as the scene out here in Cali.
