Title: The Toronto Blue Jays 2012 Thread
Post by: Lunatic on April 09, 2012, 10:50:30 AM
Won the opening series vs. Cleveland, 2-1

I'm attending the home opener tonight vs. Boston!

C - JP Arencibia - Has improved his defensive catching skills (throwing runners out, etc) and is a power hitter. Hopefully he smacks 20 HR's

1B - Adam Lind - Off to a slow start but had a big hit in yesterday's game. I'm confident he'll have a good season. 30 Home Runs would be SWEET! I'm hoping for 25 at least.
2B - Kelly Johnson - He's off to a GREAT start, hopefully he can hit around .280 at all year long (being realistic). Also is GREAT on the defensive side.
SS - Yunel Escobar - Great on defense and at the plate. A great lead off hitter, definitely an every day guy.
3B - Brett Lawrie - Not a Jay player we're more excited about! Hopefully he avoids the sophomore slump.

LF - Eric Thames - Not crazy about his defense but for now, he's the every day LF. Needs to be weary of Davis & Snider. He certainly has the potential though.
CF - Colby Rasmus -  Great on defense but really needs to improve at the plate. Seems to be a guy everyone keeps waiting for to finally "get it" .
RF - Jose Bautista - What can you say? The best hitter in baseball, period.

DH - Edwin Encarnacion - Had a great spring training and is off to a phenomenal start. Could be a real bonus in our lineup if he keeps up the hitting.

Bench:
C - Jeff Mathis is a very solid backup
OF - Davis is a nice option to have, great on defense and one of the fastest players in baseball, he's a threat to steal 2nd & 3rd when on base.
OF - Francisco offers a nice veteran backup option, but I don't see him lasting that long. Snider will come up for him eventually.
SS - Omar Vizquel is a legend, future HoF. A good guy to have in the clubhouse at this point for sure.

Starting Pitching:
1) Romero is the ace, I'm sure he's poised to have a great year.
2) Morrow has some nice stuff, hopefully he posts 11-12 wins.
3) Looking forward to seeing Alvarez tonight! He has some fantastic stuff.
Drabek is on a short leash with Carreno making a case to be the 5th starter and Cecil starting in the minors, but hopefully he provides some stability as the 5th option.
McGowan, hopefully he comes back from this injury and stays healthy in the #4 spot

Bullpen:
I think Villanueva and Janssen will be our two best relievers, big parts of what looks to be an improved pen. Cordero & Perez are solid guys as well. Glad to have Jason Frasor back! Darren Oliver is a good situational lefty. Santos blew his first save but I think he's going to be a great closer for us.

All in all, I think the division is in for a big surprise  ;)

Colby Rasmus will be fine

Jays always get off to good starts then finish 3rd or 4th. If they were in any other division they'd have made the playoffs the last decade but, not going to happen.

Not exactly my favorite team but it's home to my favorite player, Joey Bats.

Sergio Santos was such a buzzkill last night

Hopefully we take the next 2 and take this Red Sox series

3-2, sweet victory tonight  8)

This year feels different, there's a special vibe around this team

Let's beat the Red Sox tomorrow again and take the series

Was at last night's game, don't know what the attendance was but I was expecting way more.  Thought it would be like 70% full.

Pretty good game but the streaker was the one who got the most cheers all night.  :o

Big 3-1 win! Jays are now 4-2, taking the Series over the Red Sox 2-1.

MASSIVE save and confidence booster for Sergio Santos, he really needed that. Ricky Romero pitched a hell of a game, deserved the win.

Davis was our best player today  :o massive RBI triple, scored on a sac fly and then walked, stole 2nd and came home on a single. He was involved in all 3 runs!

Joey Bats and Lawrie are off to terrible starts.  Looks like all the pressure/hype built up around them to start the season is getting to them.  I think they need a road trip or 2 to get them to relax.

They are pretty lucky to be 4-2 the way they are hitting.

Joey Bats will be ok. Lawrie has struggled with the bat, hope he avoids the sophomore slump I mentioned. But his energy and defense has been awesome; heck, all his around effort, hustle and attitude has been terrific.

Only thing great that I know of is tthe blue jays got rid of the raider colors & went back to 1 of their best looks.  Wish they[royals, cubs, phillies, twins, & brewers] went back to the light blue road uniforms, FUCK everybody being in gray.  Its boring & not everyone looks good like that.  Some teams should go to beige or sand also.  What I liked about mlb in the 80's was most teams looked cool, & espn's 2 favorite teams weren't much of a factor then.

I'm loving how bad of shape the Red Sox are in.  Before the season it was safe to assume that the division winners would be NYY/BOS/TB, DET & TEX/LAA.  Leaving the Jays to beat two of those three non-division winners.  I really think the Jays can finish ahead of the Red Sox now, just have to finish better than Tampa or LA now in my mind.

Lot of things will have to go right for the Jays but it's possible to sneak into the playoffs this year.

What abysmal offensive performances in the first 2 games of this Orioles series.

We desperately need another big bat in the lineup right now.

I can't stand Thames, not a good hitter and horrible in the field.

We should package Snider & a relief pitcher for another bat.

What can they do with Adam Lind now?  He's going on his third poor year in a row. I can't see getting much back via a trade, but that might be the only option this off season if keeps playing like this.  I can't see them having much more patience with him.

David Cooper would probably be slightly better but I don't know if he'll cut it. They might just have to pull off a big trade with all their minor league talent.

Atta boy Brett Lawrie!   8)
I love how he always SPRINTS out of the box EVERY TIME.  Not very many players do that.

Finally Lind is outta the 4th spot.  Enough of the madness.
How the Jays are doing fairly well overall with black holes in the 3/4 spots and horrific bullpen pitching is a miracle.

Seriously. I'm so done with Lind, it's ridiculous.

And we need Santos back ASAP. Cordero can't close anything.

Adam Lind down to AAA, Yan Gomes is up.
Good news, it's about time.  He's at -1.0 WAR since the beginning of the 2010 season, good to have this blackhole at 1B gone.

Lind's contact status:

WOW, bold move to send Lind down, but I love it, had to be done. He's been an automatic out.

Let's see what Gomes has  8)

Blue Jays trade with Astros to get J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon & David Carpenter in exchange for Fransisco Cordero, Ben Fransisco & 4 minor leaguers.

Looks like the Jays' season is saved :).

What a disaster this season has been.  How they are still around .500 is beyond me.
I thought 2013 might be the year to make a big run, looking like 2014 is more realistic now.

As much as I'd like to have seen every AL East team be involved in the massive and relatively exciting race for the 2nd AL Wild Card I see the Blue Jays have finally fallen out of contention. I guess having most of the starting rotation killed in an airplane accident and the supposed ace having an ERA over infinity will take it's toll on even (what looked liked in April) one of the more solid teams in the MLB.

But hey, at least you guys won't get the "They'd be division winners if they weren't in the AL East" treatment again ;).
