I don't hear too much about Devin no more. I read some interview around the timeframe of his last release but that was it. I know him and Khalifa are pretty similar in styles but does that mean he replaced Devin The Dude in y'alls eyes becuz yall friends/associates try 2 write-out rappers and history if they don't do anything outta tha frame in 2-3 years?
it's ok to remain anonymous
-
Most ppl dont even know who he is.
-
Devin hasn't really been relevant in a long ass time. Yeah him and wiz are both weed rappers I don't really find their style that similar. Wiz is doing his thing right now, Devin hasn't done shit in awhile so ofcourse the focus will be on wiz.
-
Business/Market aside is what I'm talking about
Has Wiz Khalifa replaced Devin The Dude in your speakers?
-
how is that even a question?
everything I listen to replaces what I was just listening to in my speakers
whats the gist of this thread?
two completly different artists being bought up to debate what?
-
lol, Devin The Dude hasn't been relevant since before I was born. *exaggeration*
-
Leave your feelings at home
-
Why do people on here keep talking about how "relevant" a rapper is? I mean, even if Devin didn't drop an album for 10 years I would still be listening to his old songs. So that makes him relevant to me.
Anyway, no Whiz won't replace Devin, because I don't like Whiz Kalifa :P

The fuck you talking about? I could understand if Devin had mainstream success and his shit was played on a national scale in '07 or '08 & now Wiz showed up & we just brushed Dev to the side. But there is almost ZERO relevance between the two artists other than that they talk about blazing up.
& you said "Why do people on here keep talking..." followed up by saying "So that makes him relevant to me."
You can barely speak for yourself, so don't think your opinion speaks for the "people".

i like that doobie ashtray song produced by Primo 8)
-
thats a good question.
devin>>>>

classic indeed... Devin the Dude is cool on the soulful tip, plus he sings great hooks. and his oddsquad stuff is classic material as well. nothing in common with Wiz Khalifa (except for talking about the same subject matter all day everyday but there are many rappers talking exaggerately about weed), no Rap a Lot rapper can be compared to Wiz Khalifa lol.
-
wiz is more like a new generation snoop than devin to me

i agree.

The things that separate Devin and Wiz are:
Approach
Devin is more of a poet and relates his rhymes more or so to the common folk. For example "Lacville 79" is more for the masses to relate to while "My Favorite Song" by Khalifa ain't.
Content:
Devin = Soul, Wiz = Pop
Musical sound:
Very similar actually.
Devin uses live instruments and a sound that's more rooted in Funk while Wiz is more Electronic
Both harmonize even tho Devin sings more.
Both arent hyper masculine emcees, they're more for the "family" crowds. Both of their fan bases are familiar with each other in terms of they've both of their audiences are "aware of the other rapper".
I prefer Devin to Wiz but I like Khalifa a little bit. My only issues with Khalifa r that he sounds too soft/girlie as a rapper sometimes and he's always talking about money like I'm supposed to care. But white kids feed into that kind of shit more than a lot of African American kids do so that's why I'm asking.

Yeah, me neither. Another great thread from Arthur.
-
they r kinda similar, cuz they both"weed rappers"
these days tho,
Wiz --->> Devin

u crazy as hell..devin still relevant..he been on the road...gotta remember devin has never had a machine behind em..since day 1..
he comes and goes when he gets ready... which is every 2-3 yrs..
he was jus in dc n cleveland..will be chicago on the 21st
to say devin isnt relevant..n he still doin shows n sellin em out...is crazy
devin was never the whore type..
hes droppin a ep this month.. n his new album is comin in august..
i know alot of ppl are spoiled by the heavy weights who reached out to devin...
devin was the dude be4 primo or dre came around...his recent stuff imo is better than the couple he did with the others
atleast devin didnt still another rappers entire gimmick...wiz aint shit but a goofy version of curren$ey...n he dont inhale...
-
But white kids feed into that kind of shit more than a lot of African American kids do so that's why I'm asking.
LOL ridiculous
-
Wiz khalifa is more of a gimmick rapper to me, devins got more depth to his music. Most would agree.

yep..devin smoke weed...but thats not what he is all about..i can relate situations to a shit load of devin music..
ex
she useta be= i know plenty of fine broads...from school..that are obese as fuck now...n fucked jus off the strength of what she useta be..lol..
too cute= again..knew fine hoes that i thought they thought was too cute..still holla'd at em..
she was gone- kno wha it feel like when the broad is creepin..
where can we go- know wha its like knockin somebody else gal down...without gettin caught
briapatch- raised on the tale...n been in briar rabbit situations
el grande naglas- fan of the mexican females with ass..
boo booin- alot of cats know u can get out of annoyin convos jus by sayin u on the shitter
devin the realest rapper in the game...jus heavily slept on..if u cant relate to shit devin sayin somethin wrong with u...yeah he smokes gang of weed..but he is dwellin on everyday situations..sit back n go thru his discography he gets better everytime...
-
Lol do they have anything in common besides harmonizing and smoking weed? Anyways, Wiz is cool but he'll never be Devin.
-
i wonder what the black people think?
-
yeah it's true that Devin's music is very uplifting or real, and deep, that's what i meant to say in my previous post. Do What You Wanna Do, Doobie Ashtray, Just a Man...
Devin's one of these rappers that is liked by pretty much every type of crowd... gangsta rap fans, backpackers, the mainstream... also, he collaborates with everybody pretty much, kinda like Bun B, and gets down with everybody in the industry. I remember in one of his interviews he was saying how surprised he was that Snoop & Dre knew about the Odd Squad lol.
-
Devin is a very talented artist, he can harmonize, rap, sing..
i still find him kinda boring to listen to, the only thing he rap & sings about is sex and weed. ::)
-
hes droppin a ep this month.. n his new album is comin in august..
The only thing that matters is this... 8)
-
Answer the poll seriously now. This could greatly affect Devin's features on Tube's next make-believe Detox tracklisting.
-
The fact that you say "you white people" shows your racism / ignorance.
As far as your comparison, that's a joke. Devin is miles beyond wiz, devin actually is an artist, wiz is an actor reading a script. Do you listen to music or just skim through it?
-
The fact that you say "you white people" shows your racism / ignorance.
Joke's on you. He's been showing his ignorance for awhile now. I wouldn't take the race convo too seriously. This is a person who wants to compare himself to rich, succesful, black businessmen when the only part of the equation he shares is the "black" part. It would be like some little white trailer park kid on food stamps comparing himself to Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and Donald Trump because they all white. I don't put too much stock in all that race crap because it's a culture poison. If you're so little of an individual that you WANT to be strictly labeled by your skin color, then I kind of feel bad for you.
-
It's sad that only Caucasians can bRing up race. I tried to read the review on CNN yesterday about "Think Like A Man" and 2 sentences in the White guy's like "...follow a group of mostly African American men..." and as soon as I read that I got the message. Why couldn't they have left out the "African American" part? But it's CNN/the News and they always fuck shit up so I have to be the "correct" one whenever I mention Race/Ethnicity while the rest of the world gets a pass.
When u say stuff about how Race can't be talked about then u have to address that in its necessary atmosphere, like when you're tucking in your kid in bed, not when you're dealing with a fucking adult on a message board (that's petti). You come across like u haven't matured since the 3rd grade. And u suck at bustin balls too so I know that can't be it. Your shit is dryer than your mothers cooch on a saturday night.
I'll tell u what I learned in life, doing the right thing doesn't matter. It's all about having the upper hand in the moment. If you're more comfortable on another site where there's more whites talking like this then you're free to do so. So u can take that reverse oppression shit somewhere else.
**personally I think Devin+CB, tg, and the jets should do a song or two together. Or maybe devin, wiz, curren$y, cardo&sledge

No, the jokes on you if u think I take him seriously. I've witnessed plenty of his ignorant comments, I just call them out thats all.

Hey I actually agree with u on that, and it's a great point. Why in the fuck do they have to even say African American, or white in the first place? That right there is a perfect example of how the media propagates racism. Even if it's a positive story, constantly harping on race propagates racism because it reinforces that it's acceptable to categorize people based on race.
Like when they say "1st black prez" "1st black Oscar winner" etc...that's racist! Why can't they just be the next prez or next Oscar winner? Race is an issue almost entirely because the media is constantly making it an issue, and that is by design to keep people suppressed.
And that's what they're trying to do with trayvon Martin, trying to instigate racial divide because that keeps our eyes off the powers that be, and against each other. We can't fall for those bullshit games anymore.
-
I was with u until you mentioned Trayvon Martin. Fuck u 4 that

But see your using the media as a basis for how the world operates and to me, that's flimsy as hell. If you move around enough and see enough of the real world, you'll see all that stuff is IMAGE. Television, whether movies, TV shows, or so-called "reality TV" or news documentaries, aren't ever going to give you the real story. Racism is absolutetly a topic that needs to be addressed but it needs to be moved past the bigotry level and looked at for what it is.
I'll tell u what I learned in life, doing the right thing doesn't matter. It's all about having the upper hand in the moment.
What exactly do you mean by "doing the right thing"? Helping an old lady cross the street? Getting good grades in school? Saying no to drugs? Throwing a trash barrel through Sal's Pizzaria? In my view, you can still do right by yourself and have the upper hand in a moment. I sure as fuck ain't no saint but ain't no foul dude either. And the truth is being a dirt-bag has a shelf life. Deception might help somebody get over for a long time but it don't last. But, hey, everybody wants different things out of life so to each his own.

Why is that?

its crazy you say that i read a not intentionally racist review of that movie yesterday too...it had very subtle undertones of racism but not like that clan racism it was that grew up sheltered aint never been through shit so i cant relate to shit type of racism.
using terms like "target audience" and "urban" when you can tell shes ashamed or afraid to call it black.

Yup and then some. So I see nothing wrong with asking this question. Let's be real, white kids today know more about a Wiz Khalifa more than they know about a Devin The Dude.

That's absurd. That's why when you go to Slaughterhouse, Mos Def, Nas, Talib, Tech N9ne & etc. concerts it's like 75% white. Meanwhile every black kid & their mother lovez Wayne, Drake, Nicki, Ross, etc.

I'm sure more black kids know who wiz is than devin too.
I feel sorry for your mother.

Only caucasians can bring up race? Really? Maybe where you are from but come and try living in London, it's the complete opposite..

wiz khalifa aint anywhere close 2 devin.....that is all.
-
fuck Wiz im white as fuck and I stay bumpin some Devin the Dude!
-
ROFL
imo Devin is one if the best songwriter ever in rap music no doubt. Wiz is just another rapper we won't hear about in like 5 years from now.
