I always had a feeling that R.Kelly Home Alone track had a Quik influence to it.  Now I know he had a lot to do with it actually.  Great Read!

yeah he had said in interviews before that he had ghostproduced it. and also the fact that i was actually produced by G-1, you know Quik wasn't far...

Great read like everyone has said. I was slightly skeptical at first because Quik already did that mixtape and has done many interviews about his music so like how much more can he say. Well, a lot more...

I thought this was going to be a repost of Quik talking about his biggest hits. This is dope. Complex is fuckin great for doing these articles, I won't even complain about having to click one-by-one anymore.

So Quik did at the very least co-produce "Home Alone"!? FUCKIN KNEW IT!

This took a while to read, but more than worth it.  I love these in-depth article/interviews especially those that detail the making of the records.  Most of us will never get the chance to be in the studio with these producers or artists and there is only so much video footage that has been available to watch them in action.  The next best thing is the artists breaking it down and giving us a little history lesson.

There are so many more songs that I wish Quik would have covered as well.

Quote
“And I hope it came through on that record. Rhythmalism is a little bit blue, a little bit hypersexual, and I can see how—because I started fucking with my androgyny a little bit. Because hanging out with El, and hanging out with the people he had around him, like the bitches—they made me feel not so rough-around-the-edges.

"I think that's when I lost my rough edges, I lost the gangster shit and became like an R&B pretty boy, and almost gay. Motherfuckers was like, 'Man, you look kind of gay on that cover.' And I was like, Fuck you—I'll kill you. This is musical expression, bitch! Fuck off and die. But looking back it wasn't real blue.

LMAO

Love these Complex interviews. Great read.

"That breakbeat is one of the breakbeats that I invented that I used on a 2nd II None 12” back on Profile for their song 'Be True To Yourself.' I used it on this European remix that I did."

Anyone got this?

Haha, I remember when my brother bought that Rhythm-A-Lism cd and thinking "Damn, this is a gay-ass cover". Then I actually listened to it and was blown away. Don't judge a book by its cover.

very dope read and many gems dropped by one of the greatest music producers ever (along with quincy, prince etc)

few nuggets

- produced/co-produced 'home alone'...not like this wasn't obvious, but nice to have confirmation.

- 'street gospel' produced and mixed in a garage studio. crazy! this might be the best mixed/engineered album ever as far as my ears are concerned, along with rhythamalism. it's super bright and clear, but less layered than the latter.

"My thing to them is, a mic chain is a mic chain. A mic chain is not going to make you a hit record. It's how you use whatever fucking equipment you've got. Whether it's a $10 mic or a $10,000 mic. A piece of equipment has never made a hit record. It's all about riding levels, same as riding a motorcycle. It's inertia. You get a signal moving nicely and you don't touch it any more. If it sounds good and it's got no static in it, leave it right where it is."

rhythamalism 2 would be crazy if it ever happened, probably more likely than detox tbh.

you can kinda sense quik's artistic genius through the piece...doing things on based feel...but being around the wrong people at certain times has hampered his progress in the industry. his work speaks for itself tho.

Yeah that part right there is a jaw-dropper. Shows how much of a genius he really is.

I won't say MTV or BET because they clearly don't give a fuck about music anymore; but Fuse, should give this guy a weekly show. Like a weekly Visualism type gig. Not only is he unbelievably talented at creating music, he also makes it sound interesting when he breaks down the history. The story behind "Addictive" is amazing, this guy is at home and happens to hear Indian music on some tv movie and records it on a tape and takes it to the studio and chops it up and turns it into what it became - incredible.

I love these quotes

Quote
I'm not trying to be arrogant or whatever. But that music is coming from somewhere. Without me it wouldn't exist. There would be no 'Addictive' if it wasn't for me. There would be no 'In Da Club,' 'Tonite,' 'Why U Bullshittin,' 'Let's Get Down,' and a lot of records where people just tried to sound like me. 'Addictive' is a record that saved my life, gave me something to smile about in the darkest moments of my life.

Maybe I read too much into music. I can't separate myself from it. I'm not the kind of person who can just say, 'Yeah, we did that beat, and it didn't work, but this one did pretty good!' I'm passionate about music. I try not to be! But I'd only be kidding myself. That's my real passion

"I don't want them to come to L.A.; L.A. doesn't really have a culture. L.A. has lost its soul. Musical vibe in L.A. Isn't the same. We don't even have a real radio station. When it comes to R&B and all that, the signals is all scrambled"

lol it's so stupid, he says he only helped with the drum sounds of In da club. 50 wrote the song on his own and dre & mike already had a basic beat ready

yeah that's why you gotta love Quik, like a lot of legendary producers, so egotistical, but hey, i can't blame him, i would be if i were in his shoes too.

2nd II none need their fucking heads checked turning that beat down

pac 1 of many that could wreck that beat..

2nd II none would be useless on it..that beat aint even 2nd ii none style..

only person in quiks circle that couldve possible destroyed that beat the way pac did...is suga free

woulda been a perfect suga free beat...free's comedy plus richard pryors..would be 2nd ii none..

i didn't say that the drums weren't important, but to state that without quik's help, the song wouldn't exist is bullshit.
his role in the making of the song was small

Without the drums that song would never been a hit. So even if the song would exist we would probably not have heard it.

Never heard that Danny Boy album before. Danny_Boy_-_Its_About_Time__2010_ .. Recorded 1995.. lots of Quik beats! Dope

yeah that 'steppin' track he's talking about is classic! best on the album for me, shame about the shitty WA sound quality. i've asked efrain to have a go at that album if he can, or just that track would be superb to hear a bit clearer.

you don't know, it could have been a hit with different drumsounds.

fact is, quik had minimal involvement in the making of the song
