Title: What You Know About Dom Kennedy????
Post by: Spoonie Luv on September 04, 2012, 10:16:25 PM
(http://hiphopwired.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/DOM.jpg)

It Seems to me that everyone is sleeping on him as i havent seen any threads about him or his music and he is dope as fuck. He is flying under the radar and it seems that no new artist from the west will get looked at unless they get a stamp or a co-sign from Dr Dre or Snoop and thats pretty fucked up.
Well Dom has been featured on the DPGC'ology / Too Short's Tresspass and various other artist to include Kendrick Lamar so what tha fuck lol

Anyways here is my attempt to give some exposure to LA's own Dom Kennedy and try to open your horizens to some fresh new westcoast music for all you stuck in the 90's deathrow /g-funk Euro suburbian fuckheads who stay sucking on dre's dick even tho he aint putting out no new shit and probably never will (solo albums)

My Summer anthem for 2012
We Ball - Feat Kendrick Lamar
https://www.youtube.com/v/iyyKhak2BOE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyyKhak2BOE)

I made a lil mixtape of Dom Kennedy of some of my Favorite tracks to showcase what his style and flow is. He is not the most lyrical rapper but he flows tight and raps about LA shit. if you live in LA than you can relate.
EDIT: Updated Mixtape with new tracks

01 - We Ball Feat Kendrick Lamar (Prod By Chase N Cashe)
02 - My Type Of Party (Prod By DJ Dahi)
03 - Don t Call Me Feat Too Hort (Prod By THC)
04 - 1 25 (Prod By DrewByrd)
05 - P H (Prod By DJ Dahi)
06 - WORK
07 - JUDGEMENT DAY
08 - Platinum Chanel
09 -  When I Come Around
10 - I Love Dom
11  - Mr Champagne Intermission
12 - Of All Time feat BJ The Chicago Kid
13 - Playas Punch
14 -  Ice Cream Truck
15 - 1997
16 - 2mph Feat Big K.R.I.T.

Yeah I agree with People on here being stuck and that's why I don't even mention Dom.  But yeah he's not lyrical BUT he sounds DOPE!  Add OPM & When I come around to that list.  Yellow Album grew on me.

I noticed only LA heads replied so far, but yea all those songs  you guys mentioned are dope too and there's plenty more, I just wanted to make a small ep and eventually became 14 tracks. This forum is straight up stuck on dpg and dre and cant even branch out. Fuckem it's their loss but it's shame they can't expand their west coast music.

Propz for the drop but you should include "1997" on your tape - that track and the whole "From Westside With Love" is str8 fire 8)

Here's a link to most of his mix tapes with the yellow tape being his latest one.
Last year he dropped from west side with love II an official release around the same time as section 80 and jay rocks follow me home. I found my self listening to Kennedy's album more and thought he had some potential. Don't sleep y'all.

I've tried talking about some of the newer west coast acts on here, but it appears a lot of the members here have held onto the hope of G-funk making a return 7 years longer than I have. Even Crooked I fans still exist here.*

*Yes, I know that's a picture of Sly Boogy as my avatar. haha

Im from Europe, and im fuckin with all the New West (Black Hippy,Dom,Nip...etc. etc.) been listening to Dom since i first heard 1997 (2 years ago ??). Every Dom tape sofar was banging with the exception of Yellow tape, for some reason i dont like it as much as the stuff that came before it.
The most paradoxal thing is that Dom basicly makes G-Funk music with a 2010s twist to it. He reminds me alot of a young Kanye West when it comes to his rapping style (am i the only one??).

P.S. my fav track would be Grindn

In my opinion there's nothing wrong with making G-Funk music nowadays - just because it ain't popping right now dosen't mean you can't make those type of records. If it bangs - go for it!

Any yes, I agree - Dom has a good amount of tracks with that twisted 2012 G-Funk flava all over it 8)

Good music is good music, no matter if it's G-Funk or New West - just enjoy what's coming out of those speakers 8)

thats whuts up playa, yeah i can see that g-funk 2012 twist in there and at the same time some more kendrick lamar section 80 type beats, (i dont know how to classified that) know what im sayin?

spread the word playa, Dom Kennedy

His instrumental game, the way it was concocted (the freshness) should b a lesson for up and coming producers.  They don't have to bite it but he took an older sound and made it fresh all over again.

Arthur good looking out on acknowledging some real talent out the west and thank you for putting Dom in your mixtapes.
This forum is so stuck in an old sound and can't evolve outside Dre or snoop like in that other thread wishing for some old projects to come out that will never happen. My thing is keep the west moving by getting behind new artist with some real talent and repping them.
I feel the only reason Kendrick got that buzz right now is because Dre is behind him. Not saying he ain't dope without him but let's face it, he wouldn't have the same buzz if he was sill K.Dot dropping mixtapes. He would be another LA rapper with talent coming out the west.
If I were to add Dr dre to this thread tittle it would many more views just with that overrated name alone. Shit is real sad bruh, keep it movin westward.

Post by: BiggBoogaBiff on September 06, 2012, 12:58:00 AM
but that's becuz Producers and Rappers from LA think everybody still wants to hear that Post-Chronic 2001 Circa 2003 sound and they're absolutely completely fucking wrong (*i said that so calm and eloquently just now*).  i hate to tie in threads sometimes but it's just like i was saying in that "dre and snoop break ups..." thread.  NOBODY is checking for that "west coast banger", nobody cares.  it's almost 2013 and niggaz are still making interchangable records today for the year 2002.

i still can't believe some niggaz actually think people still wanna hear that shit.  it's not so much the "Dr. Dre co-sign" anymore, it's what the people have come to expect from LA and as soon as you hear "a new artist out of Cali" you automatically think "westcoast banger" beats and kobe hooks, it's horrible.

atleast with Dom Kennedy he put a FRESH (legitiment) twist on it and it sounds good (and in alot of cases better than some of the older shit).  E40's music gets played becuz it's hot and it has shit to do with his legacy (well, u can say that), same with Too $hort.  That Bay Area sound isn't half bad even tho it wears on u.  When it comes to LA all u get is tha same plate of food from 12 years ago and it's corny.  People EXPECT that from LA becuz that's all u niggaz out there ever do and that's y'all fault more than anybody elses.  truth be told y'all turn niggaz off before y'all turn people on

I'll get back on this topic later, there some more points I want to bring up although I don't know if I'm wasting my time but I know there's  a few real ones on here who feel the same way so for those I will speak on.

Whenever I post threads for new mixtapes & songs from Dom but they only get like 2 replies MAX. Which basicly means that this forum doesn't give a shit about Dom Kennedy.
Although TBH I don't like Dom Kennedy. I've given his songs many a try but I've yet to come across one that made me say "this shit is dope," and I'm usually very easy to impress. The closest he ever came to impressing me was on OPM which didn't last a week in my iPod.

never really liked OPM, i thought it was corny tbh

i did like Platinum Chanel, Ice Cream Truck; Beats, Hoes and Rhymes; Dream to Me,  and Graduate

LOL at saying we're too stuck in the past and then bringing up Dom.

The reason I like Dom Kennedy more than any other new West act is that his sound is the closest of all the new acts I've heard to the classic Westcoast sound from the 90s that we all love.

But, yeah, Dom is great -- knows how to pick a beat and ride it with panache.  And his lyrics are serious enough for me that he doesn't sound ignorant or offputting unlike a lot of obnoxious new acts.  And, mostly, he just seems to keep it real.  I will agree that The Yellow Album was a disappointment, though, but still it had some great tracks.  His best stuff is the two FWWL albums and 100% Dom.

last night i downloaded all his shit and blazed a couple and listened to everything except future drug sounds or wtf its called.

i seen grips of ppl bitching online when yellow album came out but that albums dope to me and consistant...westside2 he kind of falls off a lil bit. i didnt like the way he tried to flip
big mikes all a dream track lol the shit sounds like it wasnt mixed that great either.

westside1 is great though...

im a fan..ill be checking for him.

The Yellow Album was my soundtrack to the summer. Dom Kennedy along with TDE and Nipsey Hussle is the only West Coast acts I listen to now.

Dom's lyricism is mediocre but his delivery and flow is nice and his beat selection is just amazing. He just makes great music overall and that's why I bump all his mixtape/albums.

Throwing in another request for a re-up i'd like to check this out. I didn't really get into the Yellow Album but Dom is real nice overall.
Seems like Dom was trying to do the same thing with the Yellow Album as Nipsey did with TMC, trying to shed the westcoast sound for a more mainstream type mixtape.

dom is a poet.

not a lyricist...hes not trying to come at you with a gang of syllables and similies etc...he puts his shit together real loosely and playfully almost like a haiku or some spoken word and the way he spits it provides all the emotion of the missing words that some of yall are searching for.

i get a late registration vibe from all his work

exactly, there's something about the way he puts rhymes together, real talented, strong presence and charisma. i wouldn't definitely call him mediocre especially knowing all the real mediocre lyricists that are teeming in cali lol.
