Jin is the only one I really can tolerate on songs but Dumbfounded is a dope battler  (or was)

Jin got too arrogant in battle raps because he beat a bunch of nobodies on freestyle friday (including Skazoo) and Jin got ripped up by Solomon and ducked out of an airplane battle vs Rhymefest infront of eachothers boys.  dude's weak.

Jin is the only one I really can tolerate on songs but Dumbfounded is a dope battler  (or was)
Dumbfoundead pretty much stopped battling after he lost to this guy Kid Twist from Canada on King of the Dot, a Canadian rap battle league.  I met him in 2011 at a Grind Time rap battle event in LA, he said he probably won't battle anymore and was just focusing on music.

Jin got too arrogant in battle raps because he beat a bunch of nobodies on freestyle friday (including Skazoo) and Jin got ripped up by Solomon and ducked out of an airplane battle vs Rhymefest infront of eachothers boys.  dude's weak.
I wouldn't rule them out as all being "nobodies," as a long of people who are still big names within battle rap also had a stint on Freestyle Friday, like Loaded Lux and Hollow.  Lux had a battle recently against Calicoe and has gotten a lot of press about it... Puffy, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and Lloyd Banks all attended it, and he actually was on Howard Stern recently and had coined the phrase, "You gon' get this work," which seems to be getting stated a lot.  Skazoo didn't amount to much, but he did get featured on an article in XXL (which ironically was one where Pac was on the cover, I think it was the issue marking the seventh anniversary of Pac's death) and worked a little bit with Jay Rock.  There's a YouTube video of Jay Rock freestyling with Skazoo and Serius Jones, who was the first guy to really beat Jin while also having been featured in that same XXL issue as Skazoo.

Jin did get beat by Solomon, but it was just such a clashing of styles.  Jin is more of an off-the-top kind of guy, and he's always been.  It's pretty clear that all of the stuff he said was freestyled, though Iron Solomon came with all pre-written lyrics that were admittedly well-crafted.  So it's obvious that he has a better shot, since it was made in advance while still giving him room to through in freestyled lines if needed, while Jin is limited to whatever he can freestyle about right then and there, and it was pretty much one of his worst performances, so he got caught on an off-day.

That aside, Jin is still really good for being completely off-the-top, ESPECIALLY over a beat.  Almost no rap battle leagues now go over beats but are all pre-written shit anyway, so Jin just wouldn't fit in with how the game has evolved.  He was supposed to battle on Grind Time against Dizaster and Illmaculate in 2009, but he ended up withdrawing because Dizaster was talking a lot of shit and even started putting up pictures he found of Jin's family.

Serius Jones brought up a good point in an interview from earlier this year, where he actually had a lot of good things to say about Jin, saying that he was actually scared to battle Jin at first (though he ended up beating Jin in double-overtime by a clear margin) while shouting him out for being the only rapper to have made $100k (or more) from battle rap alone, as he had won two Fight Klub tournaments where the grand prize for both of them was $50k.  Most of the "good" battle rappers today are getting $5-10k on Smack/URL, though Murda Mook got paid $20k, though I don't see that happening again.

i dont really like those battle rap competitions they got nowadays for that simple reason...it's like pre-written poetry or spoken word or some shit. not really hip-hop. i mean, cats be gettin creative as fuck, but its really put a dent in the days of freestyling over beats with an actual flow.

I used to feel that way, but unless you have a pre-written league, emcees are only capable of coming up with so much stuff off the top of their heads, especially when viewing things taking lyrical complexity into account.  Also, a lot of leagues have been utilizing three-minute rounds, so you're spitting nine minutes of stuff... I don't know if I want to hear a guy freestyle for that long since it's not as if the rapper can go that long without getting repetitive or boring.

The stuff that a lot of the guys say now is stuff I never imagined would come out of a rapper's mouth, considering the references that they make along with all of the literary techniques... various double entendres and stuff like that, sometimes needing a second or third listen to get what they're saying.  So I'm inclined to be okay with pre-writtens as long as they bring stuff that intellectual.  But again, that's not to say that I don't like freestyled stuff, as a lot of guys still do it.

The leagues now have guys who throw in a few freestyled lines here and there, like DNA and Hollow.  A couple of months ago at URL's Summer Madness 2 (where I mentioned Puffy, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and Lloyd Banks), DNA was battling E. Ness, who is an older battle rapper who was on Making the Band.  DNA started off his second round referencing most of the celebrities there ("You still don't got nothing on that Diddy Rock/ Let's be honest, after that crowd booed you, you should back out/ I'm glad Q-Tip's there so he can throw your wax out/ After the crowd booed you, they should stop that shit/ As soon as I bust a rhyme, I'm gonna kill your whole Conglomerate/ Now how the fuck is anyone on this Summer Madness stage doubting me/ When I just killed E. Ness using every name on that balcony").  Hollow is also known for throwing in a lot of freestyled rebuttals.  One that I remember was one where his opponent said something about putting him in a headlock, then he rebuttaled with something like, "He wants to put me in a headlock/ But I got sharpshooters with headshots/ BANG! BANG! BANG! Craig's pops."  So it still happens, and it's nice when it does.

The problem is that even the best freestyler will run out of cool shit to say if they freestyle for a long time in a battle (rather than just flowing over a beat and just keep rapping about whatever).  I don't mind how it's shifted.

i feel ya, shits creative as fuck and mufuckaz come with some crazy shit from time to time...but if it takes away from the flowing aspect of hip-hop, which is just as important as the lyrics in west coast rap. they should make more leagues where they flow over beats, even if it aint off top.

Pre written battles are dope, way more personals and punches than freestyle battles. Some of those cats have immaculate delivery. The tag team battles are the best.

I'll throw Kero One in the mix too. DFD is dope. I've met him a few times.  Good music and a good dude all around.

As for battling, I did about 6 or 7 Grind Time battles in my day and a few in KOTD.  It was fun when it was at its peak in 2009-2010 but the format got stale pretty quickly and they started letting everyone who wanted to battle get in and no namers spit unlimited rounds.  Shit got too played out.  My last battle I did was in May and I don't really miss it too much.  I got about one or two battles left in me and then I'll call it quits.  Probably will happen next year though.

Yeah, a lot of his music wasn't all that.  But the battles were funny as hell, like the ones against Tantrum, Illusion Z and even FLO. But he straight up lost to Kid Twist, a goofy ass kid from Canada.
