Title: Spring again.. Time to dust off Warren G's Take A Look Over Your Shoulder...
Post by: TraceOneInfinite on March 28, 2013, 01:55:46 PM
Every year at this time, there is nothing better than bumping Take A Look Over Your Shoulder driving in the sunshine and warm weather as the flowers begin to bloom once more.  Yep, it's that time again, spring has sprung...

After his classic first solo album, I was heavily anticipating his sophmore release, and unlike Snoop he didn't dissapoint me.   The album dropped March 25th, I still remember the day having my brother drive me to blockbuster music to buy the album.   Love it from the start.  That's why I break it out every year at this time.

Really?  I was always kind of disappointed by this one.  I think I bought one of the earlier copies, there was some bonus disc (like a CD single in a cardboard sleeve) included with it, if I'm not mistaken.

No.. I don't remember any bonus cd single.  Maybe certain regions got that, and they didn't give a fuck about the midwest.

I was way disappointed with the Doggfather album, but this album I was not the least bit disappointed.  Obviously it's not a classic like his first solo, but it still met my expectations.  It really had me in the zone.  It's a true concept album, in that it had a consistent theme in sound and lyrics, that really puts you in a mood, vibe, state of mind.  Perfect for the beginning of spring.

I would compare it to albums like Outkasts ATLiens or Crucial Conflict Final Tic, as what I would call, "feel good rap".  Albums with a consistent vibe and mood throughout, that you can bump start to finish and really get in your zone.

I like the album but in retrospect a lot of songs are fairly weak, especially rapwise... a lot of rap fans consider it trash and i understand them but I like Warren's style. I fuck with a lot of songs too though : Smokin Me Out, Reality, Transformers, We Brings The Heat, What We Go Through, Relax Ya Mind, What's Love Got To Do With It (especially the remix). Annie Mae used to be my shit but listening to it nowadays it's really nothing special, I guess I had low standards back when I didn't understand English very well.

It may have been a Best Buy exclusive or something.  I think the sleeve the CD was in had the same artwork but was grayscale or something, possibly all blue.

I remember buying it and hoping that some other Warren G song that was getting radio play was on it.  I can't remember what it was.

Smokin' Me Out was a smooth ass song though.

yeah thinking about it i always bump it around spring time, although we have shitty springs over here (and shitty weather overall), it fits the season nicely, i agree with the album being a "feel good" album

It was a Best Buy Exclusive, it had a CD single for I Shot The Sheriff in a slip cover attached to the album.  The slip cover says "Warren G presents the Next Chapter of the G-Funk Era.  It had a best buy exclusive remix on it (G-Dub Radio Remix) and the previously unreleased 5 Footaz song   "Five Foot City" feat. Warren G.  At the bottom it said it was from the forthcoming Five Footaz album titled "Worldwide", which of course, never came out.  I got it the day at came out at Best Buy so i could get the extra disc.

Who cares what those "rap fans" say.  More than likely it was probably some East Coast fans.  If you think about the lifestyle and climate on the East Coast it really doesn't mix with Warren G's style of music.  What, does Warren G not spit enough elaborate metaphors to win their respect?    It's his sound, Warren always had a dope sound.  And one of the cool things about the album is that he came with yet another fresh, new sound for the album, and it was still G Funk.

"Doggfather" was the most dissapointed I've ever been.  Most people here at the forum love that album, but my theory is that I'm a few yrs older then them and that I was already into hiphop just before Doggystyle was released so if you remember just how huge that album was then Doggfather was a letdown.

Agreed that its one of my favorite summer albums.  The Dove Shack album is also a good summer album but it was very unpolished (terrible skits, sequencing, etc.).

Warrens best work was his first solo, then his second solo.. then after that the Twinz album, IMO

It depends.  But I never saw it as big of a letdown as a lot of people think.  It's a huge change in production, going from nearly all Dre beats (at a time when Dre really wanted to flex his production skills since it was also a way to show that The Chronic wasn't a fluke) to a mix of beats by Daz, DJ Pooh, etc. (many of whom were already rolling with a powerhouse and had made a number of beats that got shine).

I remember skipping a lot of songs when I first listened to the CD when it came out, so I get what you mean.  I also remember listening to Power 106 when the album came out, and a few callers were saying how they just didn't think it was as good as Doggystyle.

yeah from a production standpoint it's the best shit Warren G ever produced in my opinion, even better than his first album. there's not a single bad-produced song on the album and The Twinz are very good mc's, better than Warren G (even though they kinda lack charisma), the only lackluster track is the one Soopafly produced, Four Eyez Two Headz, but it's still alright in my book.

"Doggfather" was definitely a let-down as a follow-up to "Doggystykle", because of the lack of Dre and G-Funk....but in retrospect, it's some of Snoop's best work.

I was also disapointed at first.  Around the time DJ Quiks Balance & options, Warren G - I want it all dropped, I had Doggfather in steady rotation, and have come to love the album.

As far as Take a look.. Extremely disapointed. Another album I wanted to like.

I think I Want It All aged better than Take a Look Over Your Shoulder and as an album is more cohesive and consistent. a lot of different vibes and dope guests (DPG, Ruff Ryders, Crucial Conflict, Mack 10) and not many skippable songs, unlike TOYS. the type of cd you can bump it in your car from front to back.

Doggfather was a big disappointment when it came out because Snoop sounded too mellowed out whereas on Doggystyle he was actually pretty aggressive with his mic presence.  Also, it was perhaps the worst engineered big budget rap album of all time (36 Chambers notwithstanding because it was supposed to sound unpolished).  Also, Pooh's beats were plain-sounding and identifiably formulaic.

Having said all that, as time has gone on, Doggfather has had lasting stature because it comes off as something so unique in the history of rap music -- it's actually a Westcoast backpack album, and that's how I prefer to think of it.  It's as if Snoop wanted to make an album for the backpackers but enlisted a grip of Westcoast producers and featured artists to help him do it.  It sounds odd, but it's actually a pretty dope approach, and these days I think of it as a pretty impressive concept album from that point of view.  It's only a disappointment if you think of it as a sequel to Doggystyle when in fact you should be thinking of it as a Westcoast backpacker album.

However you look at it, it's a sophomore album that just ain't no good compared to his first.

It's still a good album in its own right tho

Yeah... 36 Chambers certainly had the worst engineering of any classic album.  You want to bump that shit but it refuses to play loud in your speakers no matter how high you turn it up.  The only way to listen to the album is through headphones.

I agree with most of this but lyrically it is typical Snoop, for it to have backpacker quality it would have to contain Wu-Tang caliber lyrics....

I thought Snoop's performance from lyrics to charisma and all the above was lackluster on the Doggfather album.  Surviving that murder case really changed him and he had not yet caught up with himself as an artist.

That said, I still think the above posts I quoted were solid posts, because I think all the guest artists really put together solid performances on the album.  Kurupt was on fire at the time and he was killing every verse he spit.  Tray Dee and the whole LBC crew gave a lot of life to the album and so on...

Snoop was close to terrible rapwise and lyricwise on Tha Doggfather but I agree with Infinite, Kurupt killed every verse and what was supposed to be the LBC crew (Techniec & Bad Azz) brought some lyrical heat as well. Tray Deee was on top on "O.J." too. wonder how the Lil C Style verses would have sounded had he not been removed.

yeah there were a couple of songs where Snoop was lyrical, I think Bad Azz, Technic and Tray Dee ghostwrote those but for the most part the guests carried that album

I think some albums just age well. I think for it's time, Doggfather was a huge let down. But now it gets a chance to stand on it's own, it might be the best DPGC album next to Streetz Is A Mutha... Both these albums have a ton of Dogg Pound features and everyone comes correct. Snoop himself seemed out of it, but looking back it was more an album that Snoop put out to get his little homies heard. It almost seems like he was trying to do with Doggfather the same thing the Chronic did for him and the other Death Row Inmates. I do think the other Death Row releases since Snoop left, Death Man Walking and Snoop's Greatest Hits with 8 unreleased tracks, could have put together a better track list for Snoop himself. But I think Doggfather was a better album from a Dogg Pound prospective.
