Brooklyn-born rap titan Jay-Z breaks his silence, dropping “Open Letter” – his latest track produced by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz – amidst widespread criticism of his recent jaunt to the Caribbean republic of Cuba. The Carters reportedly made the trip to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Certain reports of their voyage to the tiny nation – long shrouded by the specter of post-revolutionary embargo, controversy and the stigma of socialism – have all but accused the couple of traveling to the land of Castro with ulterior political motives. The uproar has also found some talking heads calling for a federal investigation and sanctions against the power couple. While the public outcry seems perversely overblown and is undoubtedly a byproduct of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s friendship with the first family, the topic is still making waves in part because of the fact that political relations between the United States and Cuba – though slightly improved – are still not the best.

Jay-Z is the voice of the establishment, the voice of the rich, the voice of the mainstream.

Yep, and it serves as nice escapist fantasy material over incredible beats. Are we supposed to be mad at him for being rich?

Hip-hop culture of the 70's, 80's and 90's -until Pac died, was the voice of the poor and disenfranchised. The people on the fringes who didn't really have it going on. After Pac died Jay-Z kind of broke through under that Mase and Puffy shiny suit mold.

Biggie was just as bad as Puffy at the whole "hey look at how rich i am" thing started...it's just that Biggie was 100x better than Puffy or Master P or Lil Wayne put together and he could get away with it by being dope. Although his biggest sell out songs came on L.A.D. after he died so nobody was gonna criticize him but you could easily see the direction Biggie's music was headed to and it wasn't pretty. the raw "suicidal thoughts" biggie was gone.

That's a fair point.
But Big raps, "Black and ugly as ever". I mean, him being fat and somewhat suicidal on his first album kind of gave him an underdog appeal. Master P also had that underdog appeal, his brother being killed, starting his own independent label, and taking it from the bottom to the top.
