Okay, I'm going to come out a say it.  Soul On Ice is NOT a classic album.  There is no comparing between these two.  First off the production and mixing on Illmatic shits on Soul On Ice hands down.  Lyrically it's could be a toss up.  Ras should have put both sides of his first 12" on there and the Diamond D remix of "Soul On Ice" cause it's way better that the album version.  And songs like "Marinatin'" and "Miami Life" are just filler.

Soul On Ice = 8/10
Illmatic = 10/10

I have said "Soul On Ice" is better than Illmatic or damn near any album for that matter...

For about 3+ years.

WTF?  What the hell is "Marketing Value" have to do with the albums and "Freestyles" have nothing to do with it either since these are albums which have songs and not freestyles.

I personally think Soul On Ice is better but in no way is it a classic. And i just can't listen to Illmatic, I can't stand the production (even though it uses some of my favourite producers) and i hate Nas voice on it, it just makes me want to shoot him. While Soul On Ice production isn't great, it is at least listenable and Ras flow is better in my opinion.

Marketing Value is damn important....do you think I could sign Copywrite to Def Jam and he would do extremely well as eminem, although marketing value isnt a feature of an mc....it helps record labels find their character and if they have the charisma to do well

Freestyles is very important in the fact that you can put out mixtapes (DJ Whoo Kid recognized 50 cent - contacted paul rosenberg)

Xzibit - "At The Speed of Life"
Nas - "Illmatic"
Ras Kass - "Soul on Ice"

are all basically in the same league...They're all debut classics...Another one is Eminem - "Infinite"...One of the most lyrical albums ever...I'd put it up there as a classic as well...PeACe

for what its worth i agree with what knuckles said. illmatic is fire. ras himself has said that there are things missing from soul on ice (party jams for one) which he never realised until after that project... its not wack.. but its not classic either.

But that has nothing to do with comparing albums.

I think At The Speed Of Life (an 8.5/10) is better than Soul On Ice and Infinite shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Illmatic.

That's your opinion...Most people would agree "Infinite" is classic and is Eminems best album to date (lyricaly)...PeACe
