Talks with various people close to the situation make it clear there were two prerequisites for Dwight Howard to
remain a Laker: fire Mike D'Antoni and amnesty, or at the very least muzzle, Kobe Bryant.
BY Ric Bucher
As audacious as that might sound, it doesn't come without precedent in Lakers' history. When Kobe re-upped in 2004, it coincided with Shaq being shipped to Miami and Phil Jackson being let go. Of course, Kobe didn't have to pressure the team braintrust -- Mitch Kupchak and Jerry and Jim Buss -- to make those moves, since Dr. Buss, in particular, was done with both Shaq and Phil at the time. The Lakers apparently asked Dwight to be patient on both fronts for at least another season, telling him "hey, you're going to have to gut this out another year," a source said, although it sounds as if VP of basketball ops Jim Buss isn't ready to abandon Kobe anytime soon. "Dwight didn't want to play with Kobe for 2-3 more years," Buss said. "I'm going to stand behind Kobe because of his history with the franchise." It would seem, then, with all that happened, the Lakers had the wherewithal to keep Howard if they had desired; they simply found the price too high.

funny thing is most laker fans hated dwight from the jump....quit reachin and actin like every1 is seriously heartbroken ala cleveland with lebron., a good portion of laker fans (myself included), didnt want dwight back to begin with....u sound like the dude who just got with the tore up neighborhood hook and is tryna convince himself that she's a dime piece and that every1 else is jealous lmao

LOL imagine last years Laker team without Kobe with Dwight as the focal point.

Either way, both would be predicted to miss the playoffs. At best Kobe's team would be the eighth seed.
Might as well have stuck with the youth & the post dominance & hope a top pick from next year's draft is the answer.
The way it's going, Lakers won't be competitive without an all-star going to LA in the next two years & then after that, unless three all-stars team up, the Lakers won't make the playoffs for decades.

i didn't see him saying anything about the Celtics
-
thats cuz the celtics are irrelevant, once again, now that the only thing that made 'em relevant in the last 25 years is gone....garnett, allen, + pierce. it was a nice 5 year run, but back to where yall belong... the bottom 8)
-
SIXERS GOIN PLACES
Two picks next year in the deepest draft since '03, Nerlens was the projected first overall pick of this draft & has potential to be a monster defensively & on the glass & MCW has tremendous upside.
Mix that with the young talent in place in Philly & they'll be on the right track.
If it wasn't for LA being a "hot spot" for all-stars to go to after the Kobe era ends, the Lakers would be in the basement of the West for literally a decade, unless you landed Wiggins or someone of that nature.

"if" dont count
yall lost ur coach and 2 top players this year....lol
nerlens hasn't even proven he's an all-star yet, let alone a franchise player.....sixers bout 2 be a bottom feeder for some time. at least u got the heat, tho.
-
lakers are gonna be a bottom feeder too because they didn't amnesty Kobe
at least ya'll got rid of that crackhead Lamar Slowdom though

lol wit a majority of them comin in the 60s :-X
but to be technical, we have 17 titles too....one in the nbl, before the franchise moved to the baa. and as u should know, the nba was formed with the merging of teams from the nbl and baa......if ur guna count baa titles, nbl titles should count too.
furthermore, 5 titles in the 80s, 5 titles in the 00's......celtics dont even have half that in the same span
-
nobody cares about anything besides the NBA and some of those Laker titles came before the team was in L.A. so you sound silly
but again at least ya'll got rid of Lamar Slowdom before his crack habit killed his career

lol then why do baa titles count :-*
and it dont matter what city..we talkin about the laker franchise, which has been around longer than the celtics

you take great pride in those 1940's Laker teams don't you?

lakers won like 4 titles before going to L.A.
boston won all their titles IN boston...L.A. had to steal another towns team

again, whats ur point? were talking as a FRANCHISE...mcdonalds was founded in san bernardino and is now located in illinois. does their success in san bernardino not count towards the franchise?? that logic is moronic...the LAKER franchise is bigger, and more successful than the CELTIC franchise. get over it...and u aint even from boston, so u bringin that up is pretty damn retarded lmao

I don't need him to be a franchise player. Just a factor in the post. The Sixers future is in the hands of the lottery.

LOL THATS WHAT IM SAYIN...THOSE AINT EXACTLY THE GREATEST OF CHANCES

Thankfully for the lakers sake, they didn't have to face tragedy like the celtics did starting with the death of Len Bias in 86. Bird having serious back problems in the late 80's, the death of Reggie Lewis. That's what mainly killed the celtics franchise. And then the curse of M.L. Carr, bringing in Dana Barros who was better with philly but sucked with boston. And giving Pitino total control. I doubt any franchise could recover from that type of adversity, even the lakers.

It was 5 actually. It does get annoying where L.A. can hardly get an expansion team of their own. Especially one with a good name. And i'm not counting the angels like the media does as an L.A. team. Galaxy i'm ok with. But most of the teams who moved to L.A. chose 2 move there, but if they get another existing nfl team, i'd say its stealing. The owner of the minneapolis lakers moved to L.A. for cash, but ironically....he chose to go back to the state for reasons I can't remember.
