Title: Can't fuck with rap anymore
Post by: elmizzy on September 06, 2013, 09:50:00 AM
Honestly I can't check for these same guys we used to listen to. Who's really bumping some new Kurupt? Still waiting on Crooked I? Did he finally drop an album? Who wants to hear these guys rap about the hood and struggles anymore? These guys have to have real jobs, there's no way they're making a living off this shit. And shame on you all for buying this half hearted, less than mediocre garbage. It's not what it used to be. It's the exact same. That's what's wrong. It's the same shit, these guys have not evolved and it's old. The only reason we liked it is because it was the first time they said it. Too Short said it, about making 1000 songs and 15 albums.

The only new guys worth checking are Kendrick and Dom Kennedy. I can't believe people are on here discussing a new Spice 1 album, or Rappin' 4-Tay. Really? Find some new, real music.

Hopsin can spit but he's too one dimensional and gets boring fast so I see why some don't fuck with him, Dom Kennedy ain't all that great of a rapper but his production is top notch

but you definitely can't go wrong with any new Dizzy Wright, Black Hippy, or Nipsey Hussle in terms of the West, I can go on longer for other regions

I definitly agree that the og's need to evolve.

The dogg pound are the perfect example, they have rapped about the same things for 20 years. I wish they would open up more instead of generic bitches and weed.

Crooked I though still is saying things worth listening to.

There are only few artists left who I still check for... but I don't even download or listen to all of their new music anymore... Maybe it's me getting being stuck in the past, maybe it's me getting older and growing up or maybe it's the quality of the music, but I'm not often impressed anymore.  It's probably a combination of all of that. I actually find myself listening to a lot of older music of those artists I still check for.

Rap got wrapped up, find a new genre for your creative aural fix as there's nothing but played out tropes and lame gimmicks left up in this.

Nothing has impressed me. Except the reaction Kendrick Lamar has got with his Control verse. All I am saying is I'm not listening to this same shit that is being repackage and sold. I'll still listen to my fav album from 1999. But I'm not going to listen to an album from 2014 trying to rap about the same shit from 99.

And what the fuck is this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdqLhxcPmzE

Dizzy Wright sounds cool.

We have non-stop pathetic releases from Snoop, Eminem and all these old dated rappers that I can't even be bothered DOWNLOADING anymore. The sheer thought of refreshing a "captcha security code" 10 times on some file upload site just so I can clearly see and type in the words correctly to download a pile of horse shit quite frankly is waste of time, to have some winrar folder stuck in my hard drive for years. Malice in Wonderland? I didn't even download that one because the last was garbage.

Crooked I had his moment between 2001-2004, and has become boring ever since. A release back then may have been enough to carve his own niche. Too many mixtapes and watered down content over the years has solidified his place as nothing more than a standard 'battle MC' with dull production. So he's out!

You used to know and anticipate some of the underground through the mainstream rappers. Now, they all just work with Britney, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars to worry about the genre. The game is finished, and was bought and sold a long time ago.

DJ Quik can still deliver but his work is few and far between for me to regain any type of interest in Rap as a whole, and even when he releases new albums, he doesn't just deliver a whole lot of heat, he only gives us little pockets of greatness letting us know he still has it, yet always has a handful of just plain weird experimental shyt on his albums that ruin it from being a solid repeatable release with replay value. We all know So Compton was where it was, songs like Nobody, hell even songs like "do you know" to be modern is where to direct it to, but trash like Jupiter's Critic & the Mind of Mars? The over-rated Hydromatic which was just shyt. But that was 2 years ago now.

It's finished. Our only hope is to get 20 years worth of unreleased from 1992 - 2012 and leave it at that

Established rappers aint got nothin to say no more. I mean nothin that people can relate to - while they were coming up, they knew what was goin on, people understood them + they were good at what they did.
Look at Eminem - when he was debuting, he had the image, people liked what he was talkin about, and the way he was doing it. And look at Relapse or Recovery - who gives a fuck about him coming out of a drug abuse or any shit like that?
Cube stay real tho, he speaks his mind still - if it just wasnt for wack beats.

And theres too many new rappers aint talkin about shit either - thats why they will be forgotten in couple of years.

I think this is a problem a lot of veteran rappers have. Recycling old verses, using the same content over and over and not really developing as an artist.
I wonder if this is a matter of them being too lazy to come up with content or them being too afraid to come out of their comfort zone that they've been in (and have been successful in) for so long.
Like how many rappers have we seen go from rapping about sex, drugs and money to being a dad (or mom) and taking responsibilty?

Come to think about it, I also wonder how much the rappers themselves believe they're the alter-ego they've created and claim to be on records? Like I'm sure no one believes that Delmar Arnaud is actually some hardcore gangsta, but his alter ego Daz Dillinger keeps saying that is on every record. Same with Kurupt. Ricardo Brown is not a gangsta, but Kurupt is in whatever world all these alter-egos live in.
I'm starting to think a lot of these rappers have split personality disorders.

I wouldnt call it personality disorder, its completly normal that when you are with a girl you act diffrent than with your friends or with your family - same goes for rap - its a street music, you get into that vibe, and rappers just spit to that. Thats why eg. Drake aint shit and got nothing to do with rap, i still dont know why hip-hop sites are making news about him.

I agree. Not sure what people get out of listening to Spice-1 and guys like that these days, but it's their choice. It's their preference. I can say I don't agree, but then I just move on.

There's still plenty of quality shit out there though. Just because the gangsta rap we grew up on has fallen off doesn't mean that rap in general isn't worth listening to.

Rap since the 80's has been about persona/alter ego.  To me it matters if it's believable or not.  They get these MC's posin with riches and diamonds and shit on their first album.  Yea right.  NWA may not have always done what they rapped about, but man they had me fooled!

Yea I'm tired of hearing about girls/pimpin/weed/money/club/drink shit.  I guess they think that's what their fans wanna hear.  At least when Suga Free or Afroman do it, it's got humor in it and it's entertaining.

Now MC's who tell it like it is like Cube or Public Enemy don't rap about all that because there's always new problems going on in the world. I love Cube's "Everythang's Corrupt" idea.  Truth.  PE's last two albums are the best they've done in years.  And KRS-ONE is still out there being himself.

Man if you would be about to rap, what would you do? start rhymin bout cooking?

I don't blame new young rappers trying to establish their brands and identities saying "gangsta shit this, coke and bitches that" since that's where 99% of new rappers start out when they don't have a face yet. I remember Wiz Khalifa was on that shit on his early tapes before he decided to rap only about weed.
But rappers like Daz, Kurupt, Snoop etc... are all old men using the same taglines they've used since they first dropped out of high school (or college?). At this point in their lives they should be on that grown man shit but yet they still sound like they're still in juvy, at least on their records. I mean look at K Dot aka Kendrick Lamar. He went from the tough guy Lil Wayne wannabe to just being himself, he even changed his stage name to his real name.
Which is why I was wondering if they're stuck in the roles that their alter-egos are in, as the "hardcore gangsta who never sleeps" or if they're not willing to move on from what made them successful in the first place. Granted they don't necessarily have to move on as whatever they want to record is their prerogative, but it would be a nice change of pace to see these rappers be more like who they really are and not what they were decades ago.

And personally I think a rapper who raps about cooking would be dope. His subject matter would be limited, but at the very least it'd be practical.

I suppose that's true. I'm just curious if some rappers get so caught up in their act that they actually start believing they're what they claim they are on wax.
As for Drake hip-hop sites talk about him since well, there's nothing else in hip hop to talk about (has anything remotely notable happened in the hip hop world other than the Control thing recently?). I personally like a few of his songs (he's not great but you could do a whole lot worse, I guess) but I think he'd be a lot better if he had come onto the scene just being himself. A light-skinned dude who came from a nice neighborhood in Toronto. Granted that would probably be boring to a lot of folks, but at the same time he'd be honest and "real" since he'd actually be himself. Unforunately he had to sign with Young Money and go around telling people that he started from the bottom. Oh what wasted potential.
