well g-funk was the mainstream sound of the mid 90's, there was no way you could escape from hearing it one way or another. it influenced the commercial sound of the day and in my case, France being a pioneer in hip hop since the 80's after the US, basically we got exposed very early. in France you got entire hoods who were raised on g-funk, especially in Lyon. I think it's also due to the fact that france has always been big on funk music too, and g-funk is an offspring of funk and the youngins whose big brothers exposed them to funk really related to g-funk. another reason is the musical appeal compared to other hip hop subgenres, i got into east coast rap later as i started understanding english but when you don't understand jackshit about english the music and the flows have greater appeal.
i'm from the younger generation so it wasn't until 1999 really that i got into g-funk with next episode blowin me away at the time (funny cause i can barely listen to it nowadays) but i'm always amazed at how groups like the spice girls had g-funkish songs and how some commercial one hit wonders were totally inspired by the g-funk sound.

doc gyneco's album which was released in 1996 is one of the biggest selling french rap albums and one of the first "french g funk" album. it sold over a million copies (which is a LOT in France, especially for a rap album) and was recorded in LA with live instruments and shit. some of the best g-funk productions i've heard. shit had mad influence over here.

jamais j'aurais pensé que quelqu'un utiliserait Ophélie Winter et G-Funk dans la même phrase mais c'est vrai que les 2 sons en questions sonnent pas mal G-Funk !

I'm from Santa Ana Cali and there's a lot of gang activity where I'm from. I was around 5 when I first hear Quik being bumped from my OG neighbors Impala and never stopped loving West Coast since.
-
Doggystyle was pretty big here in UK when it dropped and Snoop was all over the late night
music programs on weekend TV, i picked up on it from that and it opened my eyes to other
westcoast artists from 1993 onwards...then around 1994 - 1995 the G-Funk sound started to cross over
into Pop music, even the cheesy UK Boybands & Girlbands were using it haha!
-
How did I get into gangsta rap??? The OG KDAY! NWA and Eazy-E were some of my first rap tapes, they used to play that all the time.
-
I got into rap when Pac was on top of the game. I was a real young nigga at the time. I remember discovering his music and playing it constantly, walking around rapping his songs, etc. The music was eye-opening to me and I still play it to this day.
-
My first gangsta rap tape was Efil4Zaggin which I got from my father. My first rap tape overall was As Nasty As They Wanna Be from the 2 Live Crew. Which I got from my father. ;D
-
Back in primary school when i was like 8-9 i had a friend(s) who had older brothers so i think that may be how it started. I was introduced to ice-t and N.W.A (along with 2 live crew and etc) so this was back in the 80's.
I remember there was de la soul, a tribe called quest, i really loved naughty by nature, run dmc, etc
I really didn't know it was west coast or what ever, at first i think i just thought the swearing was funny.
But hey i mean i loved it. I remember getting into arrested development when i was 12 lol and anyway, once "the chronic" and particularly "doggystyle" came out i was hooked.
I loved Snoop back then, everybody did, shit blew up, you always heard in at parties and in peopel cars, everyone knows all the words.
And yeah Coolio, Cypress hill, etc.
At first i liked what ever hip hop but eventually i realized that i particularly liked west coast. mainly because of Snoop and dre and Warren-G, coolio, etc.
I liked bone thugs alot too back in the day(not west i know). I remember " i got 5 on it" went big and that led me to get into bay area rap and i was buying heaps of shit from rappers like luniz, dru down, Richie rich, e-40, ETC!
Was funny because most hip hop heads down here are east coast. I had one mate that loved the south(before it blew up), but i was west coast! lol
Wu tang were dope but i preferred DPG! ha ha
But east coast got played just as much as west at parties and piss ups.
i guess even now i buy/follow mostly west coast. I miss the old east coast style too though.

Briefly heard Ice - T's O.G back in 1991, it was my sisters, she had borrowed off here then boyfriend. Didnt really know what hip hop was being only 12 at the time. Fast forward to 1993 and this is when my love of hip hop started. There was alot of hype around Doggystyle coming out and i had already purchased "Whats My Name" on tape and loved it so had to buy the album when it dropped. Purchased the album on 5th December 1993 and as the say the rest is history.
-
Coolio - It Takes a Thief brought me here !!!
-
was listening to a saturday night mix show on the radio here in NYC and heard NWA's "Alwayz into Something", I think it was around 1991...been hooked ever since
-
My dad went to the local shop to buy some cds , at that time I believe the chronic had just dropped(wasn't sure I was about 8-9 yrs old) I somehow got him to buy mw the chronic tape ???.Not knowing what songs were on the tape.Thats when I was expose was mad as fuck though too much cussing on the tape.

im from cali but I ice cube today was a good day music video, eazy e real comton city g's video,dj quik dollars & sense, snoop dogg doggystle is the reason I fell in love with rap music
-
my uncle and his friends were always bumping it 20 something years ago
-
I was born into it. I from the 80's so anything from the West that came out, I was on it. I was in South Central at the time, so there was no way to avoid it. I'll say that around the time of the Chronic, I was already in it, full blown.
-
Around the time when The Chronic was released
-
well, before me was my pops, who would bump stuff like digital underground, beastie boys, run-dmc, nwa when i was really young....but what really got me into it was my uncle, who i remember bumped some eazy-e shit on full blast in his whip with me in the passenger seat when i was about 6 years old. i was pretty much in shock, traumatized by the lyrical content and instantly fell in love. he had a huge west coast rap cd collection, which i was always fascinated by. ever since then, it's been west coast rap in my system all day every day.....i do fux wit other coasts, of course, but u cant tell me nothin bout west coast rap.
-
I was channel surfing and saw Snoop's Drop It Like It's Hot...
Then I started broadening my horizons (at the time my mp3 player was limited to New York based indie rock and New York hip hop) with the help of the internet.

I used to be a big big fan of R&B (jodeci, blackstreet, 112, etc.) and i think its thanks to 2pac, dre or coolio i get into westcoast music. but the real boom has been in 2004 with internet where i discovered a lot of regional g-rap artists (from atlanta, texas, Tennessee, nevada, etc)
