Snoopzilla & Dam-Funk "7 Days of Funk"
Funk isn't exactly a high priority in contemporary music — spiritually, conceptually, or in the music itself. But 7 Days of Funk, a collaboration between two extravagantly funky Angelenos — producer Dâm-Funk and rap icon Snoop Dogg, billed here as Snoopzilla — celebrates this hard-to-pin down, yet unmistakable quality.
In comparison to Dâm-Funk's masterful debut album, Toeachizown — which, at points, bore some New Wave influences à la Prince — the primary point of reference here is George Clinton's cosmic slop, a rich vein of funk that Snoopzilla has been feeding on throughout his career. 7 Days of Funk reestablishes the mothership connection between the hyperhuman sprawl of Los Angeles and a higher self zooming around in interstellar space. Dâm-Funk clearly enjoys the ungainly wallop of vintage rhythm boxes, which clomp along with all their human-aping imprecisions, while stargazing synthesizer pads smear petroleum jelly on the lens.
Few rappers can pull off the ridiculous without clowning themselves in the process. Snoopzilla is a natural at doing retro with the kind of conviction required to bring chunky boogie into the present. Both he and Dâm-Funk are funk lifers who understand that supremely chilled-out, anxiety-free grooves are an excellent conduit for boasts and love songs alike. Even though the video for "" portrays the duo goofing around, the album is notable for moments of subtlety.
"Let It Go" is a breezy love jam and complex bit of self-talk from Snoopzilla at the same time. Snoop's trying to persuade a girl that they can get back on track with full knowledge that the only thing to do is what's indicated in the title. On "Do My Thang," he's meditating on some extraterrestrials' advice — "Only you can do you," they offer, presumably while hanging out the window of their flying saucer — suggesting that, for these two as much as for the listener, funk is just as good for self-actualization as it is for house parties.

All the tracks sound the same... this is not P-Funk, nothing that impresses me.

not some cheap leech, it's the official streaming from the label, to encourage pre-orders... I pre-ordered myself a hard copy a couple weeks ago but i was curious to check it out knowing that with overseas shipping, it might still be anothr 2 weeks till I get mine.

very disappointing EP from my favorite rap artist after a good promising single Faden Away, the whole EP sounds the same and mediocre, i guess snoop is running out of ideas in his writing skills or maybe his losing it. no where near as good as his music from 1998-2001. I was really hyped for this record :( i guess from now on i'll hear snoops records with low expectations.

Snoop hasn't put out anything decent since Doggumentary and nothing very good since BTC in 2006(!!)
People buggin if they expecting something credible here, ain't happening
-
"Hit Da Pavement" is straight up classic. "Do My Thang" also sticks out. Feeling the vibes on this album for sure. 8)
BTW, The song "Ride" ft. Kurupt is the beat that Snoop freestyled over at the SXW show which was originally titled "Beautiful Creep" by Dam Funk.

Snoop needed a ghostwriter and that other dude needed a coproducer - then this would've been good. As it stands its a 34 minute song with minor beat switchups every 5/7 minutes.
-
This is banging.
-
Decent...
But Dam Funk've done things like this:

well tbh dam funk is a dope modern funk artist so we can at least still expect quality music. will check out later.

Musical sounds yes but not songs with any sophisticated structure or direction. Snoop has no idea what he's doing, and no standards as the what he's putting out....or people saying no to him
-
Kurupt verse on ride is wack. the rest of this is decent.
-
im pretty sure with this and the reggae album its just some lil project he came in and did in like 3 weeks total. just heard the beats they had and made som halfass songs. he probably put just as much effort into promoting the albums as making them. hes probably like that with rap albums too but at least hes better at that
-
now I have a feeling that all these mainstream rappers will start doing songs with funk influence in them
-
sound good to me 8)
nvr knew dam funk worked on that gfunk martian track........g looking out theo!!!!!!
-
im obviously feeling the direction of this, right up my street. will definitely keep bumping.
having said that, it lacks production polish and sounds like a bunch of beats snoop is rapping over. nothing wrong with that, but a step down from a lot of his normal material. and i like dam funks sound but even within his subgenre it lacks variety. i'm spoilt for choice with this type of music and never rated him very highly.
-
like it for the 1st listen. it's good don't like snoop 1st nowdays.
-
Maybe it's just me but this music just ain't funky at all
-
I like it

lol as soon as i heard it i was lke mattys gonna love this.
its got more of the 80s funk influence then p funk and shit. i think the album bangs for the one short spin i gave it.

yeah dam funk is dope but he lacks something, in my opinion b bravo & xl middleton for example are both doing a better job at doing 80's inspired modern funk.

just bumping this new reggie b album 'DNA', another tokyo dawn dude, has production from b bravo on there. absolutely fire LP on the future funk vibe, makes this snoop effort sound kind of bad. still fuck wid it though.
-
thanks for the heads up, will check it
tbh i'm not surprised in the least to read mixed reviews about snoop's project. snoop's been lazy with his raps for too long and conceptually he doesn't put a lot of effort into what he does musically, and that dates to his dogghouse days. that's just snoop, he dabbles in something without taking it too far. it's like he's having fun like a kid has fun with toys but doesn't want to bother trying hard. it's like a celebrity who has access to professional equipment and exposure but doesn't get serious about what he does. can't blame him, i'd be havin fun in his position, it's hard to step out of your comfort zone when you're doing so well without giving a fuck.

I guess some of you guys are not too familiar with Dam Funks productions, its very electro funk ish... nothing gangsta a la xl middleton or fredweck

this ain't 2004 no more, xl middleton's sound is much closer to midnight star's than it is to parliament's

Don't worry, you're not the only one.. if this is supposed to be a tribute to Bootsy Collins, it's a fail!
