EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Two days after Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown said Kobe Bryant was "somewhat confused about culture" and criticized Bryant's treatment of former teammate Shaquille O'Neal, Bryant responded to the comments.
Brown said Tuesday during an appearance on "The Arsenio Hall Show" that because Bryant's childhood from ages 6 to 13 was spent in Italy while his father, Joe Bryant, played basketball overseas, Kobe "doesn't quite fit what's happening in America."
Brown, a running back for the Cleveland Browns from 1957 to 1965, also brought up Bryant's sometimes-icy relationship with O'Neal, saying, "He threw Shaq under the bus."
Bryant, speaking Thursday after the Los Angeles Lakers' practice, said the comments caught him off guard.
"It surprised me in a sense that it came out of left field," Bryant said. "I mean, I've never even met him, so it came out of left field but I do think it's a great opportunity to have these conversations, to have this discussion.

Except that Jim Brown is talking from a 1960's perceptive and Kobe is talking from a 21 Century perceptive. Working at a college, the black students here are closer to being like Kobe than Jim Brown. Look at most the NBA. Jim Brown has yet to see all the hipsters and dudes who in the 1960's people would say are acting weird. Shaq was a player from the 90's generation which were different than players today. Kobe helped redefine NBA players and brought a more global view, and many players today are trying to redefine their global brand. Jim Brown doesn't have to like Kobe, but Kobe is EXACTLY what's happening in America today. Dude speaks Italian, Spanish and English, expanded his brand to China and has the social media game on lock down. THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN AMERICA!

everyone is laughing at jim brown for this...what the fuck he expect, for kobe to put his fist up in the air and shout "fight the power!"?? he bein racist, and thats all it comes down to...Kobe is very in tune with the social and economical issues and is always giving back to the community.. he has multi-million dollar foundations where he takes care of the homeless people of LA and all around the world. jim brown needs 2 step it up..he prolly just mad cuz Kobe married outside his race. actually, i'm almost positive thats it, considering he talkin shit on tiger woods and michael jordan, as well, both who fuck wit bitches outside their race. :grumpy:

Highly unlikely. There were a couple of movies where jim brown were with women of different races. He most likely got on jordan & tiger cause they didn't speak out on issues going on in the world. But in a way, those 2 were smart 4 not doing so.
1. Cause 2day's america hates the truth. Especially when its blacks speaking it. And they would most likely lose all their endorsements.
2. If they stick up for someone or something that's not popular, they would lose some of their fanbase. Or lose some of their respect for them ;)
There are some celebrities out there who I lost respect for because they endorsed some idiots who shouldn't be even elected for dogcatcher. Or favored something i'm against. Just because of that, there be times where I wish some of these celebrities should keep certain opinions to themselves.
I know someone here should consider this real talk.

Listen, I posted what I thought. I defended Kobe. But I can't call Jim Brown a notch. If dude saw you right now, he'd slap the shit out your mouth. Dude is a tough man who was an activist for his time. Now he is out dated and out of touch with reality. But he ain't no bitch. And just because people call the Loose Cannons and say this doesn't make it so. And don't call the Laker fan base Laker Nation. There is only one Nation, and that's Raider Nation. The Laker fanbase is the best fan base in the NBA, and I think we need something more original than Nation. Maybe Empire?

I've heard the term. Just like Clipper Nation, Heat Nation, Cowboy Nation, Packer Nation, Dodger Nation, and Red Sox Nation. I think the Lakers deserve something more creative ans stronger than just a Nation. The Raiders are a Nation, and when Raider Nation was born, it made sense. The Lakers deserve better than some old Raider nickname for their fans.

Check the Raider thread in G Spot. I posted the evidence there. Back in 1983 when they moved to LA and people traveled to see them from the Bay. They also had many games against the Chargers and other teams when there were more Raider fans. So the Nation came from having a travelling fan base. The Red Sox copied in 1986 when they made their run. But the Raiders started the Nation thing. Others copied in the early 2000's after the Raiders run and thenuse of Raider Nation on everything.
