Title: How would you rank I'm Bout It amongst classic hiphop movies?
Post by: TraceOneInfinite on December 27, 2013, 12:38:26 AM
I think I'm Bout It might be one of the better hiphop movies of all-time.  Just like Wild Style gave us our introduction to hiphop culture in NY thru film, and Boyz in the Hood and Menace to Society spotlighted the gangsta rap culture on the West Coast; I think Master P's I'm Bout It did a fabulous job displaying Down South, New Orleans rap culture.

The music in the film features No Limit in their prime right as they were beggining to blow up.  And there are a lot of key elements you may have missed that I don't think P gets enough credit for as a film maker.  When his brother dies and they have the big procession of horn players that was quite a remarkable display.  Sure, they borrowed a lot of themes from Scarface but its really a great storyline of rags to riches, character conflict, romance and the best of down south rap in its prime.

Dope Fiend Willy, was funny.

You really think that movie is classic?
Then all the amateur releases of the westcoast mexicans Darkroom familia was also classic?

in my opinion, the only thing classic about this movie is its soundtrack, south/west coast gangsta rap at its finest :

the movie in itself is a watchable rapper's movie ala Baller Blockin' or Thicker than Water. but not a classic, it's note a legitimate motion picture, shouldn't be in the same sentence with Menace 2 Society & Boyz N The Hood. a good movie about Southern Music is Hustle & Flow.

It's pretty horrible. In its day when the whole NL thing was poppin, everybody had this shit.

Bout it song>>>>>bout it movie

Very low production value, horrid acting, cliche, etc.

It made me laugh, but for all the wrong reasons.

This movie is up there with "Wrecking Crew" and "Urban Menace". Infinite, you will love those movies.

Agreed...

I mean it's not on the level of Boyz in the Hood or Menace to Society.  But if you look at it as P being an amateur, and just low budget, grimy, down south type of shit I think P this project really helped define P and No Limit.  This is really the prime of what was a rap empire.   So take it for what it's worth.

It's a hood film not Hollywood.  And I think it's far superior to other hood films in that category.

No way bro.. it's way better than those movies.   I mean I haven't seen all of Wrecking Crew or Urban Menace... but there is something very authentic with what P was doing with the movie I'm Bout It.  I mean for outsiders like myself it was really a rare look into the best of what was going on in Down South Rap music and culture.  It wasn't as cliche' as people think, because Down South Rap movies like this had not really been done before.

All these cheap ass hip hop movies are garbage. I used to like them as a kid, but come on now. Most rappers can't act.

that actually works in this movie because it makes the film more "raw"

If they really wanted to be authentic they'd portray the heroin trade as the more lucrative hustle, New Awlins is known for that more than crack. Ask Juvy or BG.
