Well I'm sure most of you baseball heads here have heard about how MLB has put a rule in place where play at the plates have become illegal.
1.A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the Umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the Umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball). In such circumstances, the Umpire shall call the ball dead, and all other base runners shall return to the last base touched at the time of the collision.
Rule 7.13 Comment: The failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runner's lowering of the shoulder, or the runner's pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation of Rule 7.13. If the runner slides into the plate in an appropriate manner, he shall not be adjudged to have violated Rule 7.13. A slide shall be deemed appropriate, in the case of a feet first slide, if the runner's buttocks and legs should hit the ground before contact with the catcher. In the case of a head first slide, a runner shall be deemed to have slid appropriately if his body should hit the ground before contact with the catcher.
2.Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the Umpire, the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the Umpire shall call or signal the runner safe. Notwithstanding the above, it shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 7.13 if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the Umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner and that contact with the runner was unavoidable.
This basically means that catchers can't block home plate unless they have the ball and runners can't protect themselves when coming home.
I've got a few issues about this new rule but that's not what I wanted to talk about. What I really want to talk about is how people are actually dumb enough to think that this rule was put into place because the MLB wanted to protect their players from harm. The MLB and all it's teams are all for this rule, not for the well-being of their players, but because of the money. The MLB and all of the teams couldn't give two shits if a catcher or runner gets career ending injuries as a result of home plate collisions. What they do give a fuck about is whether or not those injured catchers and runners are either getting paid big bucks or worth big bucks. The Giants didn't care that Buster Posey the person was hurt. They were worried about Buster Posey the cash-cow being sidelined.
So in conclusion, if you hear somebody bitch about how this is the pussification of Major League Baseball, just punch them in the face and tell them that this has absolutely nothing to do with protecting players. It's all about the money, like it always is.

how can u switch up rules to a game that's been a tradition for for 100+ years the way it is?

The short answer is that you can't. And that's one of my personal gripes with this new rule. You can modify some aspects of baseball but you can't really get rid of home plate collisions.
Runners want to score and catchers want to keep runners from scoring, this is a dynamic that's been around since the first baseball game ever played back in the 1800's (although there are some reports that suggest baseball's been around even longer) and as a result there will always be situations that call for play at the plate collisions and no rule will change that. Unless of course the MLB decides to do the most pussified thing possible in sports and ban scores from the game.

horrible rule
let the players get injured if they are dumb enough to run into a catcher at full speed. if the catcher is brave enough to try and stop someone big like Fielder from hitting home plate, let him get injured
society is full of pussies nowadays, sports was our last breath of fresh air and now hockey is the only physical sport left.
