Former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera’s new book, “The Closer,” hits bookstores Tuesday, and Boston Red Sox fans might be surprised by some of the praise he gives to one of his old team’s rivals. In the book, Rivera says he would rather have Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia on his team over his former teammate, former Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, according to excerpts released by the New York Daily News. In the excerpts, Rivera questions Cano’s drive to win and says he doesn’t believe his former teammate “burns to be the best.” On the other hand, he pays the ultimate compliment to Pedroia, saying Pedey is “at the top” of his list of players Rivera admires. “Nobody plays harder, gives more, wants to win more. He comes at you hard for 27 outs. It’s a special thing to see,” Rivera writes of Pedroia. “If I have to win one game, I’d have a hard time taking anybody over Dustin Pedroia as my second baseman.” The harsh words are likely no skin off Cano’s back, considering he signed a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners during the offseason.

the pay differential shows their personalities alone...one realizes he can't hog his entire teams payroll if he wants to win....the other is Cano lol

first of all no he's not....if he was then San Diego wouldn't have ever traded him. Same with Boston.

Yes they would have, A-Gon was nearing free agency and there was no way the Padres were going to be able to keep him around financially (let alone keep him in fucking Petco). Smart teams do smart things like trade players with value that they can't keep around for good up-and-coming prospects (I'm explaining this because you Yankees fans have probably never seen smart transactions like this happen).
And Boston shipped him out because A). his contract was a pain in the ass and B). the Red Sox found somebody dumb enough to take the Crawford and Beckett contracts IF A-Gon was included.

Lol @ Mariano already trying to sell a book, guarantee you he doesn't say that if Cano is still in NY. But Cano is a sellout for leaving the poor small market Yankees and selling out to join the Mariners.

1-already trying to sell a book?? Dude's been retired for 8 months now and has some knowledge to drop for the world.
2-Mariano has no vested interest in the 2014 Yankees so why would he care about Robbie leaving? If he really was passionate about it he wouldn't have retired.
