Title: Beats/Apple Deal = Nail in the Coffin for Detox
Post by: me1 on May 28, 2014, 05:15:10 PM
I'd love to believe DJ Khalil when he insists it's coming, but I no longer see it happening, unfortunately.

If Dre has a position at Apple now, that means the content of whatever album he were to release would be very heavily scrutinized. Barring him doing an album full of Die Hard/I Need A Doctor type lyrics, his new role implicitly prohibits him from releasing material along the lines of his past work. Same goes for the artists we'd expect to make cameos on his songs, as well. Can't have have dudes rapping "like my girl is the game with her titties out" on your album and sit on the board of a 600 billion dollar company.

It's a wrap now, right?

Um...Dre works for Apple now?  I thought he just sold his product to them.  I would think him selling his headphone rights would free up time for Detox.

Sells product to Apple and walks away with a bucket load of cash plus shares. He has 2 options in this scenario:

1) Lay back on a beach somewhere, lighting his cigars with $100 bills while some chick is sucking his dick
2) Go into the studio to work rigorously on an album that will generate nothing more than pocket change at best

I know what I'd pick.

You have a point about Dre no longer being allowed to make gangsta rap, but Detox was never a real thing anyway.  Let it go.

Detox's outlook has been bleak for several years now. The records that have either been leaked or been being put out have all had lukewarm reactions at best and even without an Apple or Beats deal, Dre's interest in putting out another project hasn't been there for awhile. He's been actively producing less and less and playing much smaller roles in newer records.

I don't think the Apple deal is the nail in the coffin. Detox was never going to be a hardcore gangsta rap album anyway and even if it was, hip-hop is not viewed in the same manner as it was in "The Chronic" days. It's not like the people who paid to have him attached to their brand are not aware of who the guy is.

I don't believe Detox is a myth and that it was never intended to be released but I think around 2008 or 2009, Dre realized that he had painted himself into a corner with it. If it comes out, it comes out but I don't believe a word about it from any producer or artist working on it because we've heard it all before. I can't even get excited over it anymore.  It's dead horse subject.

Well from what i read about the whole apple deal was that Dre could make apple seem "cool" again so him dropping a new album could be a way of adding to that, i guess?

sad, but true. wasted opportunity, even though it's not too late to drop the album.

i'm more disappointed in the fact that Dre doesn't really produce anymore, i guess music isn't his first love lately

I just don't think the motivation is there.  He's done just about all there is to do at this point and if he makes everyone wait all this time, just to drop an album that underwhelms, his legacy will take a hit. He kind of needs to step up and finding a winning formula again before he drops Detox. But honestly, it seems almost past the point of conversation at this point.

IMO Dre lost his confidence in producing years ago...

If he's not inspired to produce, who really wants a Detox from him?  The fact that he had no credited production involvement for a new artist on Aftermath (Kendrick Lamar) matched with neither of the early test singles being produced by him suggests that he just doesn't have his heart it in that moment.  The track he did for Xzibit was a banger but who can be sure of how long ago that one was made.

There is actually a rumor floating around the Internet that since Dre is with Apple now & Apple owns iTunes, he might pull a Beyonce & randomly drop Detox on iTunes one night. This way he'll snatch sales out of the frantic stans who won't hesitate to by lol.

Just when Dubcc finally put Detox to death, now there's a possibility every single second of life that Detox will be upon us.

Euros will be refreshing the iTunes Store relentlessly lol.

When did DJ Khalil say that?

I would not put much stock in that one. Dre's biggest setback is how the album's reception affects his legacy.  From a sales point of view, Detox will more than likely do alright upon initial release, just on hype alone but the long-term reception will be what is make or break. If people buy it and either shit-can it or stop bumping it a few months down the road then that will be a problem.

"I Need A Doctor" was one of Dre's best-selling singles but the critical response was considered lukewarm.

They can release "Detox" on the new iphone, like they have with Michael Jacksons album on the Sony Xperia Z2. It wouldn't surprise me, but I wouldn't expect to see Dr Dre working hard in a studio lol

Dre tried to do Detox when he released the Kush single and I need a doctor.

Easily the most god awful singles he has ever released. Nobody liked it and so there went Detox.

Dre hasn't made a good beat in almost 10 years, who cares anymore.

Wasn't there a track with Jay-Z and another one with T.I. that was suppose to be for Detox?

"Under Pressure" was the Jay track but it was unfinished...The TI track was dope though

And Jay-Z's was linked with the Samsung Galaxy. I fucked with that theory.

LOL at this entire thread of speculation

I hear you. Detox threads tend to go that route whether by design or not.

My intent was to ask the question: How can this guy possibly release something now that he's so closely aligned with Apple? Up until now, the previous roadblock to Detox being released was the quality of the music and whether it met the standards set by Dre's earlier work. Now, however, there is the added scrutiny of the content. Possibly unprecedented scrutiny. That deads it, in my opinion. A precedent is Time Warner and Ice T's group, Body Count. Time Warner distanced itself from Body Count and what was Time Warner worth back then? It was a dirty-water dog cart compared to Apple today. Apple is a company with 180 billion dollars of revenue a year.

***As for Khalil, I recall an interview about a year ago that said something to the effect of "it's coming sooner than people think." I referenced him because I consider his opinion to be the most credible of all the folks out there close to Dre saying this or that about the project.

I don't know but I feel like we should talk about guns now.  I'm under the impression that he sold all his.
