not a fan of this one either, sounds kinda messy in parts. most people were loving it, album will have some better tracks though.

dj quik is very out of touch with what his fans want...feel sorry for the guy
he very much wants to progress musically and try new shit but his fan base will never tolerate it...unlike kanye who can drop a whole album without one snare drum on it tomorrow and it will spark conversation for five months this album will be treated like a mixtape and will be forgotten about the day after it drops no matter how good it is. this single is enh.

i'm all for trying new things and all but when you try, chances are you fail before succeeding, and that song is not dope, the hook is corny as hell and the content is boring
give me a book of david type of album and i'm fine with it
-
I was expecting Quik's verse first and then Suga Free's. That would have sounded better as we're all used to the snippet that dropped months ago. I do like the clarity of the sample and the extra parts of the beat in this version. Dom Kennedy neither makes or break the song though.

idope song.i really like it.wish dom kennedy wasnt on it tho. but i could always skip his part.quik album should be good.

agreed trying to like this song is like looking for a diamond in the middle of a big ass turd. i liked book of david if for nothing else he had jon b sounding good on that...i really wanna like this song and be objective but i cant...its filler material.

the album sounds like it will have a handful of dope tracks and the rest not so much. i mean it's a quik album so dude is always doing very interesting shit, but i can't help but feel its gonna be a step down from book of david. maybe it's just me, some of the others called it potentially his best album since rhythmalism, but that's not what i was hearing so far.

Surprised to see this song getting hated on by some diehard Quik fans. To me, this song is already a classic - I bumped the snippet like 100 times - and the full version does not disappoint. The beat sounds improved from the snippet, in fact.
I agree that the song should have started with Quik. I would like a remix with just Quik on it, but Suga Free and Dom Kennedy drop some good verses over this fly ass beat.
Quik picked a good single for Book of David (Luv of my Life) and he picked the right one for this album too, in my opinion.

theres a couple songs on rhythmalism and balance and options i never play...hopefully the new album will be good and this song will just be one of those type of songs. sucks dom couldnt get on something a lil fresher though. i like dome kennedys shit alot.

It's a good track, but I agree.. it sounds kinda messy.
We've been listening to the 2 min video snippet for two years, than the Suga Free 1 minute snippet, now the final version.. the effect sounds like a "cut and paste".
The different parts of the song don't sound really blended.. especially when the chorus arrives at the beginning.
I wish the instrumental outro was longer, that was dope.
To me it's a 8/10, better than "Love of my Life" actually.

i wish i liked it but i don't, luv of my life and nobody were much better imo

see this is where rational discussion breaks down, where criticism or dislike is perceived as hate. it'd be easy to say everything he puts out is amazing, but that's not the truth of it, at least to my ears. goes without saying everything quik does is of a certain quality (technically), but dude has set the bar the pretty damn high for what makes a great record.

yup, 'luv of my life' was classic.

Thought the track was dope. Surprised w/the mixed reaction.
-
Enjoying it, and look forward to banging it on CD. First time I've ever heard Dom Kennedy, he's not bad.
-
I like it...it's just a matter of time..
back in 2011..many people criticized Book of David...
today people love this album..Midnight LIfe will be the same story

some people heavily praised book of david on release and praised it even more over time. so that's not the case of everyone who isn't overwhelmed by this one thus far. one thing i will say if you have to bump his albums fully before you can really evaluate. there's always some type of sonic style to catch onto. this one sounds more airy, lots of 808 use, rather than the huge warm bass on book of david. you can't hear the low end properly on those snippets though. don't get me wrong, i'm happy as fuck for a new dj quik LP, but BOD got me hyped for something a bit different to this. that's my vibe so far.

Poor choice of words on my end, Matty - didn't mean to imply that you were a hater. Obviously, you're not a hater of Quik, you're one of his biggest fans on this forum. It just surprises me that this song should displease the loyal Quik fans. To me, it is consistent with Quik's recent body of work - it has affinities with his older sounds, but the sounds are being taken in new directions. To me, the new music is very dope (just as Book of David was) - maybe the music video will elevate people's opinions of Life Jacket.

it's not a bad song don't get me wrong, it's a good song. it has that prince type of vibe, big musical production, it's just how it was put together it seems a bit rough. quik's verse is the best part. 'luv of my life' on the other hand was pure groove. quik has amazing material on all his albums, but BOD was super strong, seems like it's underated. i'm not sure i like some of these new directions over what he was doing on there. trapped on the tracks is the best example. but hey, you can't please everyone, it's all good.
